# Wine regions, tasted where the wine is made.

By Wimup desk · 10 picks · 8 vlogs · ≈ 4 min read

The 10 wine regions worth building a trip around, ranked by the wine and the visit together, with the grape to taste and the city that gets you there.

We ranked these ten on the standing of the region’s wine first, then on how easily a visitor tastes it at the cellar door. Every one is a day trip from a Wimup guide, and each pick names the grape that made its name and the months of its harvest.

## FAQs

### What is the best wine region in the world to visit?

Bordeaux has the strongest claim on the wine, and it is the easiest to reach, with the vineyards an hour from a city with its own wine museum. For a gentler visit with more walk-in tastings, the Barossa and Alsace are easier.

### Do I need to book wine tastings in advance?

In Napa and at the classified Bordeaux châteaux, yes: most estates take visitors by reservation only. In the Barossa, Alsace and the Cape Winelands many cellar doors take walk-ins, but booking ahead is still wise at weekends.

### When is the best time to visit a wine region?

Harvest, when the vineyards are busiest and the villages hold their festivals: September and October in the northern hemisphere, February to April in the southern. Some small producers close to visitors while picking, so check first.

### How do I visit wineries without driving?

Join a guided tour or hire a driver from the gateway city, or pick a region with a train. The Douro line runs from Porto to Pinhão, and Colmar puts the Alsace wine villages a short bus or bike ride away.

### What is qvevri wine?

Wine fermented and aged in large clay vessels buried in the ground, the traditional Georgian method UNESCO listed as intangible heritage in 2013. White grapes left on their skins this way make amber wine, the style Kakheti is known for.
