# Scuba diving, the world’s best dives.

By Wimup desk · 10 picks · ≈ 7 min read

The reefs, walls, wrecks and big-animal encounters worth booking a whole trip around, ranked, with the season and what waits below the surface.

Some dives are worth crossing oceans for. We ranked the planet’s great underwater destinations by sheer wow, from coral gardens to shark-filled blue water.

## Scuba diving, the world’s best dives.

### 1. Raja Ampat, Indonesia

West Papua · Indonesia · rated 4.9/5

The most biodiverse reefs on earth, soft-coral gardens, drifting mantas and walls so alive they look painted. Getting there takes two flights and a boat, and most people dive it from a live-aboard. Nothing else on this list is as remote or as rewarding.

- **Best for:** Biodiversity
- **Type:** Reef · drift
- **Season:** Oct–Apr

### 2. Great Barrier Reef

Queensland · Australia · rated 4.7/5

The world’s largest reef system, from the Ribbon Reefs to the Cod Hole’s giant potato cod. Day boats from Cairns reach the inner reef; the Ribbon Reefs need a live-aboard out of Port Douglas. The difference in quality is large.

- **Best for:** Reefs
- **Type:** Reef
- **Season:** Jun–Oct

### 3. Sipadan, Malaysia

Sabah · Malaysia · rated 4.8/5

An oceanic sea-mount swirling with turtles, reef sharks and tornado-like barracuda schools. Permit numbers are capped daily and allocated through the resorts, so the dive is booked long before the flight.

- **Best for:** Big life
- **Type:** Wall
- **Season:** Apr–Dec

### 4. Great Blue Hole, Belize

Lighthouse Reef · Belize · rated 4.6/5

A 124m sapphire sinkhole of ancient stalactites and circling reef sharks. The stalactites sit deep and the bottom time is short, so the hole is a photograph more than a dive. The surrounding atolls are the better diving.

- **Best for:** Geology
- **Type:** Sinkhole
- **Season:** Apr–Jun

### 5. Red Sea, Egypt

Sharm · Egypt · rated 4.7/5

Warm, clear water over coral walls and legendary WWII wrecks like the Thistlegorm. The best of it runs south from Hurghada on a week-long boat. The Thistlegorm still has motorcycles stacked in the hold.

- **Best for:** Wrecks · reef
- **Type:** Reef · wreck
- **Season:** Mar–May

### 6. Galápagos, Ecuador

Pacific · Ecuador · rated 4.9/5

Hammerhead and whale-shark encounters in cold, wild current, plus diving marine iguanas. Darwin and Wolf are live-aboard only and the current is serious. This is not the place to log your first cold-water dives.

- **Best for:** Sharks
- **Type:** Pelagic
- **Season:** Jun–Nov

### 7. Palau

Micronesia · Palau · rated 4.8/5

Blue Corner’s electric drifts and the surreal, stingless Jellyfish Lake. Blue Corner is dived on a reef hook, hanging in the flow while the sharks work past. Learn the hook before the dive, not on it.

- **Best for:** Drift
- **Type:** Drift · lake
- **Season:** Nov–Apr

### 8. Cozumel, Mexico

Quintana Roo · Mexico · rated 4.6/5

Effortless, vivid drift diving along a healthy stretch of Caribbean reef. The current does the swimming, which makes it the friendliest big-name diving in the Caribbean. Ferry over from Playa del Carmen and stay on the island.

- **Best for:** Easy drift
- **Type:** Reef · drift
- **Season:** Nov–Mar

### 9. Maldives

Indian Ocean · Maldives · rated 4.7/5

Manta cleaning stations, channel drifts and night dives beside whale sharks. Hanifaru Bay fills with feeding mantas in the southwest monsoon, though only snorkellers are let in. A live-aboard beats a resort for the channels.

- **Best for:** Mantas
- **Type:** Atoll
- **Season:** Dec–Apr

### 10. Silfra, Iceland

Þingvellir · Iceland · rated 4.5/5

Snorkel or dive between two continental plates in glacial, glass-clear water. It is a few degrees above freezing year round and dry-suit only, so bring the certification. Visibility runs to a hundred metres, which is the entire point.

- **Best for:** Unique
- **Type:** Fissure
- **Season:** Jun–Aug

## FAQs

### Where is the best diving in the world?

Raja Ampat, for sheer biodiversity, and it is not close. The Galápagos and Palau are the picks for big animals and current.

### Which of these suits a new diver?

Cozumel and the Red Sea. Both are warm, clear and forgiving, and in Cozumel the current does the swimming for you.

### Do I need a live-aboard?

For Raja Ampat, the Ribbon Reefs and the outer Galápagos, effectively yes. A day boat cannot reach the sites those places are known for.

### What certification do I need?

Open Water covers most of this list. Silfra needs a dry-suit qualification, and the Blue Hole and the Galápagos are advanced dives with real depth and current.

### When is the diving season?

It varies by ocean: October to April for Raja Ampat and the Maldives, June to October for the Great Barrier Reef and the Galápagos, and the northern summer for Silfra.
