# Michelin cities, eat at the source.

By Wimup desk · 10 picks · 10 vlogs · ≈ 7 min read

The cities with the densest constellations of stars, where the food alone is reason enough to book the flight. Ranked by stars, depth and value, with a table to start with.

Some cities you visit for the sights; these you visit for the table. We ranked the world’s great dining capitals by stars and by how well they feed you at every price.

## Michelin cities, eat at the source.

### 1. Tokyo, Japan

Kantō · Japan · rated 4.9/5

More Michelin stars than any city on Earth, and that's before the ramen counters and basement sushi bars locals actually book. Book the small counters through a hotel concierge months out. The three-star rooms are easier to get into than the eight-seat ones.

- **Stars:** 200+
- **Signature:** Sushi · kaiseki
- **Best for:** Omakase

### 2. Paris, France

Île-de-France · France · rated 4.9/5

The birthplace of the guide and still its spiritual home, from haute-cuisine palaces to neighborhood bistros doing one thing perfectly. The bistro renaissance is where the interesting cooking is now. Keep the palaces for the room and the service.

- **Stars:** 130+
- **Signature:** Haute cuisine
- **Best for:** Classics

### 3. Kyoto, Japan

Kansai · Japan · rated 4.8/5

Kaiseki refinement in the old capital, seasonal, ceremonial and quietly close to perfect. A kaiseki dinner runs two hours and follows the calendar rather than a menu. Let the ryokan book it rather than trying yourself.

- **Stars:** 100+
- **Signature:** Kaiseki
- **Best for:** Tradition

### 4. Osaka, Japan

Kansai · Japan · rated 4.8/5

Japan's kitchen, street-food chaos and three-star counters within the same square mile. Eat standing up in Dotonbori and sitting down in Kitashinchi. The city has never seen a reason to choose between the two.

- **Stars:** 90+
- **Signature:** Street food
- **Best for:** Value

### 5. San Sebastián, Spain

Basque Country · Spain · rated 4.8/5

More stars per capita than almost anywhere, plus the best pintxos crawl on the planet. Do the pintxos crawl in the Parte Vieja first, one plate a bar. The starred kitchens sit in the hills above the town.

- **Stars:** 16+
- **Signature:** Pintxos
- **Best for:** Bar-hopping

Pearl River Delta · China · rated 4.7/5

From three-star Cantonese to the world’s cheapest starred meal, dim sum, roast goose and skyline views. The cheapest starred meal in the world is a bowl of noodles here. Queue for it, then take the Star Ferry across for the view.

- **Stars:** 70+
- **Signature:** Dim sum
- **Best for:** Variety

England · UK · rated 4.6/5

A global dining capital where every cuisine on earth competes for stars, and often wins. The best of it is no longer French. Book the Indian and Chinese rooms, which is where the ambition has gone.

- **Stars:** 70+
- **Signature:** Global
- **Best for:** Range

New York · USA · rated 4.7/5

Fine-dining ambition at full throttle, from tasting-menu temples to a starred slice of pizza. Reservations open a month ahead at ten in the morning and go in seconds. A bar seat is the way in once the dining room has gone.

## FAQs

### Which city has the most Michelin stars?

Tokyo, by a wide margin, and it has led since the guide arrived there. Paris and Kyoto follow.

### Do I need to book months ahead?

For the small counters, yes. Tokyo's eight-seat rooms and New York's tasting menus are harder to get than the three-star dining rooms, which usually take a month's notice.

### Where is starred food cheapest?

Hong Kong and Singapore, where a star can sit on a bowl of noodles or a hawker stall. Both cities put one on food that costs a few dollars.

### Is a Michelin trip only about the starred meals?

No, and the best cities on this list say so themselves. San Sebastián's pintxos bars, Osaka's street food and Barcelona's tapas culture are why those cities rank at all.

### When should I go?

Outside August in Europe, when many kitchens close, and outside Japan's Golden Week. Otherwise a restaurant city is a year-round trip.
