# Hidden gems of North America, beyond Cancún and New York.

By Wimup desk · 10 picks · 5 vlogs · ≈ 4 min read

Ten underrated cities from Newfoundland to Guatemala, from Guanajuato's tunnelled ravine to Dominica's rainforest capital, ranked by how much more they give than their visitor numbers suggest.

Most North America trips run New York, Cancún, Las Vegas and Mexico City. These ten sit a short flight or a bus ride off that circuit. We ranked them by the gap between how good the place is and how few visitors it gets, the same basis as our global hidden gems list.

## FAQs

### Why is Oaxaca not on this list?

It is already on our global hidden gems list. This list leaves it there and goes one step further off the circuit, with three other Mexican cities in its place.

### Does North America include Central America and the Caribbean here?

Yes. As on our North America page, the continent runs from Canada through Mexico and Central America to the Caribbean islands, which is why Antigua Guatemala, Santiago de Cuba and Roseau are on it.

### When is the best time to visit?

The Mexican, Guatemalan and Caribbean picks are best in the dry months from November to March. The three Canadian picks are summer and early autumn places, from June to September or October.

### Which picks pair well on one trip?

Guanajuato and Puebla each sit a few hours by bus from Mexico City. Mérida and Palenque join up across the Yucatán and Chiapas, and St. John's and Charlottetown make an Atlantic Canada trip.

### Which pick is the cheapest?

Palenque, with day budgets from about $35, then Antigua Guatemala and Santiago de Cuba from about $40. The Canadian picks and Roseau cost the most, at roughly $100 or more a day.
