# Hidden gems of Asia, beyond Bangkok and Bali.

By Wimup desk · 10 picks · 2 films · ≈ 4 min read

Ten underrated Asian cities, from Khiva's walled inner town to Matsumoto's black castle, ranked by how much more they give than their visitor numbers suggest.

Most Asia trips run Bangkok, Bali, Tokyo, Seoul and Hanoi. These ten sit a train or a short flight off that circuit. We ranked them by the gap between how good the place is and how few visitors it gets, the same basis as our global hidden gems list.

## FAQs

### Why are Kanazawa, Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang not on this list?

They are already on our global hidden gems list, alongside Tbilisi. This list leaves them there and goes one step further off the circuit.

### When is the best time to visit?

It splits by region. Uzbekistan, Korea and Japan are best in spring and autumn, Tainan, Vigan and Ipoh in the cooler, drier months between November and April, and Kuching from May to August.

### Can I combine Khiva and Bukhara in one trip?

Yes. Trains run between the two across the Kyzylkum desert, and most Uzbekistan routes link them with Samarkand. Give Bukhara two or three days and Khiva one or two.

### Which picks pair well with a big city?

Gyeongju and Jeonju are both a high-speed train ride from Seoul, Matsumoto is a direct limited express from Tokyo, and Ipoh is a short train ride north of Kuala Lumpur.

### Which pick is the cheapest?

Khiva, with day budgets from about $25, then Bukhara and Jaffna from about $30. Matsumoto and Gyeongju cost the most, both above $60 a day even at the low end.
