# How to pick the right neighborhood

Your base shapes the whole trip more than any hotel feature. Here’s how to read a city fast and book the right one.

By the Wimup desk · 6 min read · Stays · Hotels

## Quick answer

Pick your base by what’s within a 15-minute walk, not the star rating. Stay one stop out from the icons, near a transit line, in an area that’s residential but still has cafés and dinner within reach.

## Location beats stars

A four-star hotel in the wrong district will sour a trip faster than a plain room in the right one. The thing you’re really buying is **everything within a short walk**, breakfast, a metro entrance, somewhere to come back to at 11pm.

## How to read a city in five minutes

Open a map and check four things before you look at a single hotel:

- **Transit lines.** Is there a metro or main bus route within a few minutes’ walk?
- **Walk distance to the icons.** 15–25 minutes on foot is the sweet spot, close, not on top of them.
- **Where locals eat.** Search restaurants and see if the good ones are residential or all aimed at tourists.
- **Green and water.** A park or riverside nearby is worth more than a pool you’ll use once.

## The one-stop-out rule

The blocks immediately around the famous sights are the most expensive, the most crowded and the least local. Move **one metro stop or a 15-minute walk out** and you trade nothing in convenience for a better price and a real neighborhood.

- Traveler: Look for: Example feel
- **First-timer**: Central, walkable, on a metro line: Le Marais · Shibuya
- **Budget**: One stop out, residential: Latin Quarter · Yanaka
- **Nightlife**: Near bars, soundproofed room: Bastille · Shinjuku
- **Quiet / family**: Leafy, near a park: Saint-Germain · Daikanyama

## A 5-minute pre-book check

Before you confirm, do this:

- Drop the hotel pin and walk the route to the nearest station in Street View.
- Read the **2-star reviews**, not the 5-star ones, they reveal noise, stairs and dodgy streets.
- Check the time of your last activity each day and whether you can get back easily.

## Red flags

Be wary of bases **right by major train stations** (transient and noisy), on a pure nightlife strip if you value sleep, or so residential there’s nothing open after 8pm. Convenience cuts both ways.

#### The short version

- Buy the **walkable radius**, not the star rating.
- Use the **one-stop-out rule** for price and authenticity.
- Read 2-star reviews for the real downsides.
- Match the area’s vibe to how you’ll actually spend your evenings.
