# What a city break actually costs in 2026

A clear per-day framework, where the money goes, and how the same city can cost $70 or $300 a day.

## Quick answer

Budget by day, not by trip. A mid-range European or Asian city break runs roughly $120–200 per person per day for a stay, food, transit and two paid sights. Cheaper cities drop to $50–80; pricey ones climb past $250.

## The four-bucket framework

Every day’s spend falls into four buckets: **sleep, eat, move, see**. Size each one and you have a budget that survives contact with reality, far more useful than a single trip total you blow through on day two.

- **Sleep**, 35–45% of the day
- **Eat**, 20–30%
- **Move**, 5–10%
- **See**, 10–20%

## Where you sleep (35–45%)

Your bed is the biggest lever you control. Moving one neighborhood out from the icons often halves the nightly rate, and puts you among the places locals actually eat. Shoulder season knocks another 20–30% off, and a guesthouse or well-run hostel beats a chain on both price and character.

## What you eat (20–30%)

The sustainable rhythm: markets and street food for two meals, one proper sit-down dinner. Lunch menus at good restaurants deliver the same kitchen at half the dinner price, the single best food-budget trick in any city.

## How you move (5–10%)

Most central trips are walkable; a day or multi-day transit pass covers the rest. The line item that quietly balloons is airport transfers, check the train or bus before defaulting to a taxi.

## What you see (10–20%)

Plenty of the best experiences (neighborhoods, viewpoints, markets, parks) are free. City passes only pay off if you genuinely cram three or four paid sights into a day; otherwise pay as you go.

- City tier: Per person / day: Examples
- **Shoestring**: $50–80: Hanoi · Tbilisi · Kraków
- **Mid-range**: $120–200: Lisbon · Seoul · Athens
- **Splurge**: $250+: Tokyo · Reykjavík · Zurich

## The shoulder-season discount

One timing decision outweighs every other saving: going in the shoulder months (roughly April–May and September–October) can cut both stays and flights by 30–40% versus peak. Same city, different budget entirely.

##### Price the same trip twice

Before you commit to dates, run your stay in a peak week and a shoulder week side by side. The gap is often larger than your entire daily food budget.

#### The short version

- Budget by **day**, split across sleep / eat / move / see.
- Your **neighborhood and season** move the number more than anything.
- Two market meals + one sit-down dinner keeps food costs sane.
- Free experiences carry most cities, buy passes only if you’ll cram.
