# Top 10 Things To Do in Trincomalee

Trincomalee, Sri Lanka · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Trincomalee runs on a season the rest of Sri Lanka does not. While the southwest monsoon closes Galle and Mirissa, the east coast dries out, the sea flattens and the whales arrive. Around that sit a Shiva temple on a cliff, a Portuguese fort the army still occupies, and one of the great natural harbours.

## Quick answer

Trincomalee is the east coast beach and whale base, and it is at its best from May to September, exactly when the south is wet. Give it three days: one for Koneswaram and Fort Frederick above the harbour, one for the reef at Pigeon Island off Nilaveli, one for a dawn whale boat. Stay at Uppuveli if you want to walk to dinner, Nilaveli if you do not.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May to September, the dry east coast season
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** $35-75
- **Language:** Tamil, with Sinhala and English widely spoken
- **Getting around:** Tuk-tuk in town, hired car or scooter to the beaches
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.srilanka.travel/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Trincomalee

### 1. Koneswaram Temple

Hindu temple · Swami Rock, Fort Frederick, Trincomalee 31000

A Shiva kovil painted in blocks of red and gold, standing on the rock above the harbour mouth. The Portuguese pushed the original into the sea in 1622; pieces of it were recovered by divers in the 1950s and returned to the shrine. It is one of the five great Shiva sites on the island and it is busy from first light.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunrise
- **Tip:** Shoes off at the gate

### 2. Pigeon Island National Park

Marine park · Off Nilaveli, 16 km north of Trincomalee

Two granite islands a short boat ride off Nilaveli, ringed by the healthiest hard coral in Sri Lanka. Snorkellers see blacktip reef sharks in the shallows and turtles over the reef flat, in three to fifteen metres of water. Take one of the first boats: by mid-morning the reef flat is crowded.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Park ticket plus boat
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Bring your own mask

Links: [Website](https://www.dwc.gov.lk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Nilaveli Beach

Beach · Nilaveli, 16 km north of Trincomalee

The wide, quiet half of the coast: white sand behind a screen of casuarina, and the launch point for Pigeon Island. The sea is flat from May to September and unswimmable under the northeast monsoon. Currents build in the afternoon even when the surface looks calm, so swim in the morning.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunrise
- **Tip:** Swim before noon

### 4. Fort Frederick

Fort · Konesar Road, Trincomalee 31000

The Portuguese finished it in 1624 with stone from the temple they had just destroyed. The Dutch dismantled and rebuilt it in 1665 and gave it the name; the British took it in 1795 and garrisoned it until independence. The army still holds it, spotted deer graze the lawns, and the road through climbs to Koneswaram.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Walk it rather than drive

Links: [Website](https://archaeology.gov.lk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Whale and dolphin watching

Boat trip · Boats leave from Nilaveli, Uppuveli and Dutch Bay

Blue whales and sperm whale pods sit six to eight nautical miles offshore, about half an hour out, and sperm whales are seen more reliably here than anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Spinner dolphins come in numbers. The season runs May to October; outside it the sea is too rough and the boats stop.

- **Time:** 4 hrs
- **Cost:** Operator rates
- **Best at:** 6am departure
- **Tip:** May to October only

### 6. Uppuveli Beach

Beach · Uppuveli, 6 km north of Trincomalee

The near strip, and the one to pick if you would rather walk to dinner than drive. Guesthouses, dive shops and beach kitchens sit in a row behind the sand, and the whale boats and Pigeon Island transfers pick up here. Narrower than Nilaveli, and busier at sunset.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Base here for a short stay

### 7. Marble Beach

Beach · China Bay, 12 km southwest of Trincomalee

A sheltered cove inside the air force land at China Bay, run by the Sri Lanka Air Force and the clearest water on this coast. The bay stays calm when the open beaches are churning, which makes it the safe swim of the three. Signposted off the airport road.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed at the gate
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Calm when Nilaveli is not

### 8. Kanniya Hot Springs

Hot springs · Kanniya, Kinniya Road, 8 km west of Trincomalee

Seven square wells of warm mineral water inside a walled courtyard, each a slightly different temperature, drawn with a bucket rather than bathed in. It has been a pilgrimage stop for centuries and it is a twenty-minute visit, not a spa afternoon. Pair it with the war cemetery on the way back.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed at the gate
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Bring a change of clothes

Links: [Website](https://www.srilanka.travel/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Trincomalee War Cemetery

Cemetery · Nilaveli Road (B424), 5 km north of Trincomalee

Over 600 Commonwealth graves from the years when this harbour was the Eastern Fleet's base and Japanese carrier aircraft raided it on 9 April 1942. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission keeps the lawns and the headstone rows immaculate. Late afternoon light runs straight down them.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Open daylight hours

### 10. Pathirakali Amman Temple

Hindu temple · Dockyard Road, Trincomalee 31000

The Kali kovil at the edge of the town centre, its gopuram stacked with painted figures and its interior far busier than the postcard temple on the rock. Drums start in the evening and the shrine fills with people who live here. This is the working counterpart to Koneswaram.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Evening puja
- **Tip:** Cover shoulders and knees

## Trincomalee travel FAQ

### When is the best time to visit Trincomalee?

May to September. The east coast sits in the rain shadow of the southwest monsoon, so it is dry and flat-calm exactly when Galle and Mirissa are wet. The northeast monsoon runs roughly November to February and closes the boats. October and March are the shoulders.

### How many days do you need in Trincomalee?

Three. One for Koneswaram, Fort Frederick and the town kovils, one for Pigeon Island and the sand at Nilaveli, one for a dawn whale boat or for Kanniya and the war cemetery. Two works if you skip the whales.

### Is Pigeon Island worth the trip?

In season and early, yes. It holds the healthiest hard coral in Sri Lanka and blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows. Buy the Department of Wildlife Conservation ticket at Nilaveli, take one of the first boats, and bring your own mask.

### How do you get to Trincomalee from Colombo?

Three ways. The train from Colombo Fort takes about six and a half hours and runs twice a day. By road it is roughly six hours through Habarana. Cinnamon Air flies the domestic hop to China Bay, seven kilometres from town.

### Nilaveli or Uppuveli?

Uppuveli is six kilometres from town, narrower, and puts the dive shops and places to eat within walking distance. Nilaveli is sixteen kilometres out, wider and quieter, and is where the Pigeon Island boats leave from. Uppuveli for a short stay, Nilaveli for a long one.
