# Top 10 Things To Do in Tainan

Tainan, Taiwan · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Tainan was the seat of government for Taiwan for more than two centuries, until 1887, and it still holds the island's oldest forts, its first Confucian academy and a temple on almost every block. The old city is flat and compact, and it eats earlier and better than anywhere else in the country.

## Quick answer

The best things to do in Tainan are Chihkan Tower and the two Yongfu Road temples beside it, the Dutch-built Anping Old Fort and the banyan-swallowed Tree House, the Confucius Temple, Hayashi Department Store, Shennong Street after dark and the Chimei Museum. Give it three days, start each one with beef soup, and plan evenings around which night market is trading.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Nov · Dec · Mar
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** NT$1,500–3,500
- **Language:** Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese Hokkien
- **Getting around:** On foot, by city bus and by taxi
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.twtainan.net/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Tainan

### 1. Climb the platform at Chihkan Tower

History · No. 212, Sec. 2, Minzu Rd, West Central District

The Dutch built Fort Provintia here in 1653, and Koxinga made it his seat of government after taking the island in 1662. Little Dutch masonry survives under the two Qing-era pavilions on top. It stays open into the evening, when the lit roofs are the better view.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** After dark
- **Tip:** The Official God of War Temple is directly across Minzu Road, so see both in one stop

### 2. Walk the last wall of Fort Zeelandia

History · No. 82, Guosheng Rd, Anping District

The Dutch East India Company began Fort Zeelandia in 1624, and the brick south wall of its outer fort is all that is left of their work. Koxinga took it in 1662 and renamed the place Anping. Climb the lookout tower for the view over the old harbour.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Anping Old Street starts outside the gate; eat there after the fort, not before

### 3. Stand under the roots of the Anping Tree House

Landmark · Gubao St, Anping District

Tait & Co. built a trading house and warehouse here in 1867 for sugar and camphor. Abandoned, the warehouse was taken over by banyans whose roots now hold up its walls. One ticket covers the merchant house next door.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Take the raised walkway over the ruin; the roots read best from above

### 4. Find the prince's palace inside the Grand Mazu Temple

Temple · No. 18, Ln. 227, Sec. 2, Yongfu Rd, West Central District

It was built in 1664 as the residence of the Ming Prince of Ningjing, and became a temple to the sea goddess Mazu in 1684, after the prince took his own life. It is a national monument and still a busy working temple.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** The Official God of War Temple is a few doors up Yongfu Road

### 5. Enter the First Academy at the Confucius Temple

Temple · No. 2, Nanmen Rd, West Central District

Built in 1665, it was Taiwan's first Confucius temple and its first school, which is why the gate reads First Academy of Taiwan. The outer grounds are a shaded park of red walls and old banyans, open to anyone walking past.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Grounds free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Fuzhong Street, opposite the main gate, is the lane for a snack after

### 6. Ride the lift at Hayashi Department Store

Landmark · No. 63, Sec. 2, Zhongyi Rd, West Central District

Hayashi opened in December 1932 as the second department store in Taiwan, with the first lift in Tainan. Restored and reopened in 2014, it sells Tainan-made goods floor by floor. The rooftop shrine still carries Second World War strafing scars.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free to enter
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Go straight to the roof first, then work down through the floors

### 7. Start the day with beef soup at Hsi Lo Tien

Food · No. 98, Gongyuan S. Rd, North District

Tainan beef soup is breakfast: raw slices of same-day beef, cooked in the bowl by boiling broth poured over them. Hsi Lo Tien holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for its version. Come early, which is when the city eats it.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Inexpensive
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Order rice on the side; the broth is meant to be finished

Links: [Website](https://guide.michelin.com/en/tainan-region/tainan/restaurant/hsi-lo-tien-beef-soup?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Work the aisles of Garden Night Market

Night market · No. 533, Sec. 3, Hai'an Rd, North District

Tainan's largest night market trades only on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, on an open lot north of the centre. In 2023 the Ministry of Economic Affairs gave it five stars, the only night market in southern Taiwan with the top grade.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free to enter
- **Best at:** After 19:00
- **Tip:** Rain closes it, and most stalls take cash only

Links: [Website](https://www.twtainan.net/en/attractions/detail/5573?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Give the Chimei Museum a full morning

Museum · No. 66, Sec. 2, Wenhua Rd, Rende District

Shi Wen-long, founder of the Chi Mei group, built a private collection of Western art, arms and armour, natural history and more than a thousand violins. Since 2015 it has filled a white neoclassical palace in Tainan Metropolitan Park.

- **Time:** 3 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** It closes on Wednesdays; the park around it is free to walk

Links: [Website](https://www.chimeimuseum.org/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Walk Shennong Street after dark

Neighbourhood · Shennong St, West Central District

Once Beishi Street, one of the Qing-era Five Channels harbour lanes, it keeps a run of narrow late-Qing and Japanese-era shophouses, now bars, cafes and studios. Jinhua Temple, from 1830, stands along it. The lanterns go on at dusk.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** It is a short street; walk it, then stay for a drink in one of the shophouses

## Tainan travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Tainan?

Three. One for the old city (Chihkan Tower, the Yongfu Road temples, the Confucius Temple, Hayashi and Shennong Street), one for Anping (the fort, the Tree House and the Eternal Golden Castle), and one for the Chimei Museum or a day out to Qigu or the Sicao mangroves.

### Which Tainan night market is open tonight?

It depends on the day, because the markets rotate. Garden trades Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, Dadong Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and Wusheng Wednesday and Saturday. Rain closes the open-air lots, so keep a restaurant in reserve.

### How do you get from Taipei to Tainan?

High-speed rail, about 1 hour 45 minutes on the fastest trains, to THSR Tainan Station in Gueiren. From there the Shalun Line shuttle runs to Tainan Station in the city centre in about 25 minutes. Conventional trains are cheaper and take much longer.

### When is the best time to visit Tainan?

November to March. Winter in the south is dry and mild, May brings the plum rains, and June to September is hot, wet and typhoon season. February or March adds the Lantern Festival events in Yanshui and the old city.

### How do you get around Tainan without a metro?

On foot in the old city, which is compact, and by taxi or the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle for Anping and the coast. City buses take an EasyCard. Many visitors rent a scooter, which needs a licence valid in Taiwan.
