# Top 10 Things To Do in Szeged

Szeged, Hungary · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Szeged is the city Hungary rebuilt from nothing. The Tisza broke through in March 1879 and took all but a few hundred houses, and what went up in their place was a planned city of boulevards, squares and Art Nouveau palaces, paid for in part by other European capitals. The ring roads still carry their names.

## Quick answer

Two days is right for Szeged. Day one is the rebuilt centre on foot: Dóm tér and the Votive Church, the tower climb, the Reök Palace and the New Synagogue, with the boulevard palaces in between. Day two is water, either the thermal pools at Napfényfürdő Aquapolis or the Tisza bank and the botanical garden over in Újszeged. In July and August the cathedral square turns into an opera stage.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** $50–100
- **Language:** Hungarian
- **Getting around:** Walking and trams

## The 10 best things to do in Szeged

### 1. The Votive Church and Dóm tér

Church · Dóm tér, Szeged 6720

The fourth largest church in Hungary and the building the whole rebuilt city points at. Work began in 1913 on a vow taken after the 1879 flood and finished in 1930, the dome standing 54 metres over a square laid out to the dimensions of St Mark's in Venice. The organ runs to 9,040 pipes.

- **Time:** 45–60 min
- **Cost:** Free; tower ticketed
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The 302-step tower climb is bought at the visitor centre under the front stairs

### 2. Reök Palace

Art nouveau · Magyar Ede tér 2, Szeged 6720

The best Art Nouveau building in the country outside Budapest, finished in 1907 to Ede Magyar's design and often read as Hungary's answer to Gaudí. Water lilies climb the green façade in plaster and wrought iron. Inside it is the regional arts centre, with shows that have included Picasso, Chagall and Goya.

- **Time:** 45–60 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Tue–Sun, 10:00–18:00
- **Tip:** The stairwell railing is worth the ticket on its own, between exhibitions

### 3. The New Synagogue

Synagogue · Jósika utca 10, Szeged 6721

Lipót Baumhorn's masterpiece, built between 1900 and 1903 and the second largest synagogue in Hungary at 1,340 seats. The dome rises 48.5 metres and is glazed blue and white, so the room reads as open sky. Art Nouveau, Gothic and Historicist detail sit together without arguing.

- **Time:** 30–45 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Midday light
- **Tip:** Check the concert calendar; the acoustics are the other reason to come

### 4. Móra Ferenc Museum

Museum · Roosevelt tér 1-3, Szeged 6720

The county museum, in a domed neoclassical block on the Tisza bank. Permanent rooms cover the archaeology of the Great Plain, the ethnography of the river villages and regional fine art, and the temporary shows are the largest in southern Hungary.

- **Time:** 1.5–2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Saturday, open to 20:00
- **Tip:** The Black House on Somogyi utca is the same museum's city-history wing

Links: [Website](https://moramuzeum.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Napfényfürdő Aquapolis

Thermal bath · Torontál tér 1, Szeged 6726

Szeged sits on thermal water, and this is where the city puts it to work: 4,400 square metres of pools fed by the Anna and Dóra wells, plus thirteen slides adding up to a kilometre. It is a four-season water park with a medical wing attached, not a heritage bathhouse.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday mornings
- **Tip:** The Anna bath downtown is the quieter, older half of the same operation

### 6. Szeged Zoo

Zoo · Szél utca 90, Szeged 6725

Sandy pine woodland on the northern edge of the city, and one of the largest zoos in Hungary. The walking distances are long by design, since the enclosures are sized for the animals rather than for the path, so plan half a day rather than an hour.

- **Time:** 3–4 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Visitors enter at Szél utca 90; the Cserepes sor address is the service gate

Links: [Website](https://zooszeged.hu/en/home/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Dömötör Tower

Landmark · Dóm tér, Szeged 6720

The oldest thing in Szeged: an 11th-century Romanesque base that outlived the flood and was rebuilt in 1931 into the small octagonal tower beside the cathedral. It marks where the medieval parish church stood, which is the only trace of the pre-1879 city left on this square.

- **Time:** 20–30 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** With the tower climb
- **Tip:** Entry runs on the combined ticket sold at the cathedral visitor centre

Links: [Website](https://szegedtourism.hu/en/votive-church-2/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Szeged National Theatre

Theatre · Vaszy Viktor tér 1, Szeged 6720

Fellner and Helmer built it in 1883, four years after the flood, in the eclectic and neo-baroque manner they used across the empire. The horseshoe auditorium seats 680 under a ceiling painted by Zsigmond Vajda. Opera, drama and ballet all run out of the same house.

- **Time:** An evening
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Sep–Jun season
- **Tip:** The summer company moves outdoors to Dóm tér, so the house goes dark in July

Links: [Website](https://www.szinhaz.szeged.hu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. The water tower on Szent István tér

Landmark · Szent István tér, Szeged 6725

Szilárd Zielinski built it in 1904, one of the first reinforced-concrete water towers in Europe. The style is geometric Art Nouveau rather than floral, and it is the reason this square out in Felsőváros is worth the tram ride.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free outside
- **Best at:** Daylight
- **Tip:** Interior access is occasional; the square and the façade are the visit

Links: [Website](https://szegedtourism.hu/en/art-nouveau-attractions-in-szeged/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Pick Salami and Szeged Paprika Museum

Museum · Felső Tisza-part 10, Szeged 6721

Two of the things Szeged sends out into the world, explained in one small factory museum on the Tisza bank: the dry-cured Pick salami, and the paprika milling that made the city's name. The window is narrow, Tuesday to Saturday afternoons, so it needs planning.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Tue–Sat, 15:00–18:00
- **Tip:** Confirm the hours before you walk out; the afternoon slot is easy to miss

- **Lecsó**: Peppers, tomato and onion cooked down with paprika sausage. Summer food, from the paprika belt.

## Szeged transport & airports

- **Trams and trolleybuses** (SZKT): Szegedi Közlekedési Társaság runs four tram lines over roughly 23 km plus the trolleybus network. A single bought from the driver costs 650 HUF, so buy at a machine or a kiosk instead. [Website](https://szkt.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **On foot** (Belváros): The centre is flat and compact, and the boulevard ring drawn after the flood keeps nearly everything worth seeing inside it. Dóm tér to Széchenyi tér is about ten minutes. [Website](https://szegedtourism.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

- The ring boulevards carry the names of European capitals, the cities whose money paid for the rebuilding that followed.
- Dóm tér was laid out to the dimensions of St Mark's Square in Venice and finished between 1929 and 1932.

## Szeged travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Szeged?

Two. Day one is the centre on foot: Dóm tér and the Votive Church, the tower climb, the Reök Palace and the New Synagogue. Day two is the water and the river, either Napfényfürdő Aquapolis or the Újszeged bank. Add a third for Ópusztaszer or Subotica.

### When is the best time to visit Szeged?

May to September. July is the sunniest month and the hottest, with spells above 35C, so May, June and September are the comfortable version of the same weather. July and August are also the open-air festival season on Dóm tér.

### Is Szeged worth visiting from Budapest?

Yes, and at a push it works as a day trip: the fastest train from Budapest Nyugati takes about two and a half hours each way. An overnight is better, because the two things Szeged does best, the thermal water and the lit cathedral square, are both evening propositions.

### What is Szeged famous for?

Three things. Paprika, which is milled here and carries the city's name. Halászlé, the hot red fish soup made from Tisza fish. And the Art Nouveau city built after the 1879 flood. Add Pick salami, and the university laboratory where vitamin C was isolated.

### Do you need a car in Szeged?

No. The centre is flat and walkable inside the boulevard ring, and four tram lines plus the trolleybuses cover the rest. A car only helps for the day trips out to Ópusztaszer, Makó and Mórahalom, and Subotica has a direct train.
