# Top 10 Things To Do in Sylhet

Sylhet, Bangladesh · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Bangladesh's northeastern city sits on the Surma below the Meghalaya hills, with a Sufi saint's tomb at its centre and tea gardens at its edge. Past the city limits it is water country: swamp forest, clear border rivers and haors the monsoon fills each year.

## Quick answer

Start at Shah Jalal's dargah and Shah Paran's hilltop tomb, walk Keane Bridge and the Surma riverfront, and end the first day in the Malnicherra tea garden. Give the second to Ratargul's flooded forest and the white stones at Bholaganj, and the third to the Tamabil road for Lalakhal's blue river and Jaflong.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Jun · Jul · Aug · Nov
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** $25–60
- **Language:** Bengali, with Sylheti spoken at home
- **Getting around:** CNG three-wheelers, rickshaws, a hired car for the border rivers

## The 10 best things to do in Sylhet

### 1. Hazrat Shah Jalal Dargah

Sufi shrine · Dargah Mahalla, north of Zindabazar, Sylhet

The tomb of the Sufi saint whose arrival in 1303 brought Islam to Sylhet, and the most visited shrine in Bangladesh. The pond holds the sacred gojar catfish and the courtyard the Jalali pigeons. Come after dawn prayers, before the crowds.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Cover shoulders and legs, and leave shoes at the entrance

### 2. Ratargul Swamp Forest

Swamp forest · Fatehpur Union, Gowainghat, about 26 km north of Sylhet

A 3,325 acre stand of koroch trees that the monsoon floods to the branches, and the best known freshwater swamp forest in Bangladesh. You see it from a small wooden boat poled between the trunks. Go between June and September, when the water is high.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Monsoon
- **Tip:** Agree the boat fare before you board. Foreigners pay a higher fixed rate.

### 3. Malnicherra Tea Estate

Tea estate · Airport Road, northern edge of Sylhet

The first commercial tea garden in the country, set up in 1854 on about 1,500 acres of low hills at the city's edge. Walk the estate roads between the bushes, the shade trees and the planters' bungalows. Mornings are cooler and the light is softer.

- **Time:** 1 to 2 hr
- **Cost:** Ask at the gate
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** It is a working estate. Stay on the roads and ask before photographing pickers.

### 4. Jaflong

River and hills · Gowainghat, about 60 km northeast of Sylhet on the Tamabil road

Where the Dauki leaves Meghalaya, becomes the Piyain and spreads across a wide bed of stones below the Khasi hills. The view is across the border, with the hills and the old suspension bridge on the Indian side. Pair it with Lalakhal on the same road.

- **Time:** Full day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Monsoon
- **Tip:** The border runs down the river. Stay on the Bangladeshi bank.

### 5. Lalakhal

River · Sarighat, Jaintiapur, about 40 km from Sylhet

The Sari runs down from the Cherrapunji hills a startling blue-green, and Lalakhal is the stretch just inside Bangladesh. Hire a boat at Sarighat on the Jaflong road; the run up to the river's source takes about an hour and a quarter.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Boat hire
- **Best at:** Winter, for clear water
- **Tip:** Boat fares rise on Fridays. Go midweek.

### 6. Keane Bridge and Ali Amjad's Clock

Landmark · Surma riverfront, Bandarbazar, Sylhet

The 1936 iron bridge over the Surma, named for a British governor of Assam, is the city's front door and now carries only rickshaws and walkers. At the city end stands Ali Amjad's Clock, the riverside tower a Prithimpasha nawab raised in the 1870s.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Walk the bridge, then the riverbank below the clock

### 7. Bholaganj Sada Pathor

River · Companiganj, about 33 km north of Sylhet

White stones carried down the Dhalai from the Meghalaya hills pile up where the river meets the border, with clear water running over them. A boat from Bholaganj takes you out to the bed. The country's largest stone quarry surrounds it, so the approach is industrial.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Boat fare
- **Best at:** Oct to Mar
- **Tip:** Wear shoes you can soak

### 8. Hazrat Shah Paran Mazar

Sufi shrine · Khadim Nagar, about 7 km east of central Sylhet

The hilltop tomb of Shah Jalal's nephew, who fought beside him in 1303 and then set up his own lodge here. An old tree locals call the tree of hopes spreads over the grave. Fridays are crowded, so come early on a weekday.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Shoes off at the steps, and dress as for the dargah

### 9. Bisnakandi

River and hills · Rustampur Union, Gowainghat, on the border north of Sylhet

Several folds of the Khasi hills meet at one point, with a waterfall dropping from the Indian side into a clear, stony stream. Reach it by boat from Hadarpar. The monsoon is the time, when high water slows the stone collecting that crowds the dry months.

- **Time:** Full day
- **Cost:** Boat fare
- **Best at:** Jun to Sep
- **Tip:** CNGs for Hadarpar leave from Amberkhana

### 10. Shahi Eidgah

Mughal monument · Shahi Eidgah, Sylhet

A Mughal open-air prayer ground on a hill, built under the faujdar Farhad Khan and laid out for more than 100,000 worshippers. Gandhi, Jinnah and Fazlul Huq all addressed rallies here. Outside the two Eid mornings it is quiet and open.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Climb the steps for the view back over the city

## Sylhet travel FAQ

### When is the best time to visit Sylhet?

It depends on what you came for. Ratargul, Bisnakandi and the waterfalls peak in the monsoon, June to September, when most of the city's 4,200 mm of annual rain falls. November to February is dry and cooler, with clearer water at Lalakhal.

### How do you get to Sylhet from Dhaka?

Biman, US-Bangla and Novoair fly daily to Osmani International. Intercity trains cover the 319 km in around seven hours, and coaches take six and a half to seven and a half by road.

### How do you visit Ratargul Swamp Forest?

Hire a CNG or a car to Gowainghat, about 26 km north, then take a boat from the ghat. There is an entry fee, and fixed boat fares are higher for foreigners. Go in the monsoon, when the water rises into the trees.

### How many days do you need in Sylhet?

Three. One for the city: Shah Jalal's dargah, Shah Paran, Keane Bridge and Malnicherra. One for Ratargul and Bholaganj, one for Lalakhal and Jaflong on the Tamabil road. Add two for Srimangal or a Tanguar Haor houseboat.

### What should you wear in Sylhet?

Dress modestly. Covered shoulders and legs suit everyone in the city, and women will want a scarf for the shrines. Shoes come off at every dargah, so wear a pair that slips on and off easily.
