# Top 10 Things To Do in Swakopmund

Swakopmund, Namibia · Africa · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Namibia's coast is a strip of desert against a cold ocean, and Swakopmund is the one town on it built for staying. Germany laid it out in 1892 as the colony's harbour, then spent twenty years failing to build the harbour. What is left is a grid of Wilhelmine facades, a 262 metre iron jetty and the Namib starting at the last street.

## Quick answer

Two days is the standard stop, three if you add Walvis Bay properly. Give the first morning to the dunes (sandboarding, quad bikes or a Living Desert tour), then walk the jetty and the Mole in the afternoon. Day two goes south to the lagoon and Sandwich Harbour, or north to the Cape Cross seals. Keep a half day for the Moon Landscape on the way out.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Apr · May · Sep · Oct
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $55–120
- **Language:** English is official, German and Afrikaans are widely spoken on the coast
- **Getting around:** The old town is a flat twenty-minute walk end to end, and everything past it needs a car or a tour transfer

## The 10 best things to do in Swakopmund

### 1. Sandboarding the dune belt

Adventure · Dune belt off the C14, south of the Swakop River mouth, Swakopmund

The Namib starts where the last street ends, and every operator works the same ridge south of the river mouth. Lie-down boarding is quick to learn and genuinely fast. Stand-up runs on snowboard boots and bindings, takes a morning to get right, and costs N$700 with Alter Action.

- **Time:** 4 hr
- **Cost:** From N$700
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Coastal fog usually clears by mid-morning, so the later slot has the better light. Book the day before over the December holidays.

### 2. A Living Desert tour in Dorob National Park

Adventure · Dorob National Park, dune belt south of Swakopmund

Four hours in the dune belt hunting the Little Five: sidewinder, palmato gecko, Namaqua chameleon, dune lark and shovel-snouted lizard. Guides read the night's tracks, dig the animals out and put them back. The point is what survives out here on fog alone.

- **Time:** 4–5 hr
- **Cost:** Half-day tour
- **Best at:** 08:00 departure
- **Tip:** Bring a long lens and closed shoes. Living Desert Adventures and Tommy's both run it, and both fill up in high season.

### 3. The 1905 jetty

Landmark · A. Schad Promenade, Molen Weg, Swakopmund

Germany drew 640 metres of iron pier to make a harbour out of open coast, and had 262 built when the First World War stopped the work. Restored and reopened in 2010, it is the town's walk: cold swell underneath, the dune belt south, Jetty 1905 at the far end.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** The wind gets up from mid-afternoon, so take a jacket. A window table at Jetty 1905 buys the same view sitting down.

### 4. Sandwich Harbour by 4x4

Adventure · Sandwich Harbour, Namib-Naukluft National Park, 50 km south of Walvis Bay

A lagoon where hundred-metre dunes drop straight into the Atlantic, inside the Namib-Naukluft park and reachable only by 4x4 on a falling tide. Operators leave the Walvis Bay lagoon at 08:30 or 12:30 and take about four hours. The park permit is usually in the price.

- **Time:** 4–5 hr
- **Cost:** From N$2,600
- **Best at:** Low tide
- **Tip:** Go with an operator rather than a rented 4x4. The beach section is tide-dependent and vehicles are stranded there every season.

### 5. Kristall Galerie

Museum · Cnr Tobias Hainyeko Street and Theo-Ben Gurirab Avenue, Swakopmund

The largest quartz crystal cluster on public display anywhere, fourteen tonnes of it, lifted out of the Otjua mine near Karibib. The rest is a working lapidary and a tourmaline and aquamarine collection, which is the part that explains Namibia's gem trade. Closed Sundays.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Entry fee
- **Best at:** Foggy morning
- **Tip:** Pair it with the Swakopmund Museum. Both are indoors, and the coastal fog often sits over town until ten.

Links: [Kristall Galerie](https://kristallgalerie.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Swakopmund Museum

Museum · Strand Street, at the lighthouse end of the promenade, Swakopmund

Namibia's largest privately run museum, opened in 1951 in the old harbour customs building. Rooms cover Erongo minerals, coastal ethnography, colonial-era dentistry and the Rössing uranium mine, and a display on the 1904 to 1908 genocide has been added since.

- **Time:** 1.5–2 hr
- **Cost:** Entry fee
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** It sits at the lighthouse end of the promenade, so the Mole and the jetty follow on in one flat walk.

### 7. Cape Cross seal colony

Wildlife · Cape Cross Seal Reserve, C34 salt road, 120 km north of Swakopmund

One of the largest Cape fur seal breeding colonies on earth, on the salt road north into the Skeleton Coast. The noise and the smell reach you before the walkway does. The same headland carries a replica of the padrão Diogo Cão raised here in 1486.

- **Time:** Full day
- **Cost:** N$150 plus N$50 a vehicle
- **Best at:** Oct–Dec pupping
- **Tip:** The C34 salt road is fine in a 2WD but slick in fog. Fill up in Henties Bay, because there is no fuel at the cape.

Links: [Park permits (MEFT)](https://www.meft.gov.na/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Pelican Point and the Walvis Bay lagoon

Wildlife · Walvis Bay Waterfront, Walvis Bay, 33 km south of Swakopmund

The lagoon is a Ramsar wetland holding flamingos in the thousands, and the sandspit at its mouth holds a Cape fur seal colony and a lighthouse. Kayak among the seals from the beach, or take a catamaran out of the Waterfront that comes back on oysters and sparkling wine.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Kayak or cruise
- **Best at:** 08:00 departure
- **Tip:** Kayaking gets you closer. The catamaran is the better call with children or in a swell, and both leave early.

### 9. Tandem skydive over the Namib

Adventure · Swakopmund Airport, east of Swakopmund

This drop zone is the one place the dune sea and the Atlantic are both in frame, which is the whole argument for jumping here rather than anywhere else. Tandems run from around 10,000 feet, about 35 seconds of freefall. Operators have worked the coast since 1997.

- **Time:** 2–3 hr
- **Cost:** From about N$1,900
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Morning air is calmest and the fog is usually gone by nine. Keep a spare morning in hand, because wind cancels jumps.

Links: [Skydive Swakopmund](https://skydiveswakop.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. The Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive

Scenic drive · Namib-Naukluft National Park, 30 km east of Swakopmund via the C28

A marked trail through the eroded Swakop valleys, the Goanikontes oasis and a plain of welwitschia plants, some of them over a thousand years old. Numbered beacons point out each stop and the round trip runs about four hours. Buy the permit in town first.

- **Time:** 4 hr
- **Cost:** N$280 plus N$60 a vehicle
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The MEFT office at Bismarck Street and Sam Nujoma Avenue sells the permit. High clearance is enough in the dry; low range is not needed.

## Must-try dishes in Swakopmund, Namibia

- **Walvis Bay oysters**: Farmed in the lagoon 30 km south and fattened by the cold Benguela upwelling. Sold by the half dozen.
- **Oryx (gemsbok) steak**: The default game cut on every coastal menu. Lean, dark, and best served rare.
- **Kingklip**: The Benguela's premium fish, firm enough to grill. Ask what came in rather than reading the menu.
- **Kudu fillet**: Sweeter and softer than oryx, and the cut to order once you have tried gemsbok.
- **Biltong**: Air-dried game rubbed with salt, vinegar and coriander. Kudu and oryx are the standards here.
- **Kapana**: Beef grilled over coals and sliced straight off the fire, sold with chilli salt at the stalls.
- **Potjiekos**: Meat and vegetables left in a cast-iron pot over coals for hours. The braai's slow cousin.
- **Apfelstrudel**: The German bakery tradition survived here intact, and the town's coffee shops still run on it.

## Swakopmund transport & airports

- Martin Luther, a steam traction engine bought in 1896 to replace ox wagons, broke down outside town and is now a national monument.
- Rain averages about 37 mm a year. Nearly all the moisture this coast gets arrives as fog off the Benguela current.
- Rossmund, seven minutes from town, is one of a handful of all-grass golf courses built in a desert.

## Swakopmund travel FAQ

### Is Swakopmund worth a stop?

Yes, and it is the only town on the Namibian coast built for staying rather than working. It is the base for the dune belt, Sandwich Harbour, Cape Cross and the Moon Landscape, all of them day trips, and the one place on this coast with a real choice of restaurants.

### How many days do you need in Swakopmund?

Two, or three if you add Walvis Bay properly. One day covers the dunes and the town on foot, the second goes to the lagoon or north to Cape Cross. Past three days it becomes a beach holiday, which is exactly what Namibians use the town for in December.

### Can you swim at Swakopmund?

You can, but the Benguela current holds the water near 15 °C and the mornings are usually fogged in. The Mole is the sheltered spot and the one families use. Most visitors treat the sea as scenery and spend the day inland in the dunes instead.

### Do you need a 4x4 in Swakopmund?

Not for the town or the tarred road in from Windhoek. You need one, or a tour, for Sandwich Harbour and the Welwitschia trail. The salt road north to Cape Cross is fine in a 2WD when dry and slippery in fog, so drive it slowly.

### When is the best time to visit Swakopmund?

April to May and September to October. Daytime temperatures sit near 20 °C, the fog burns off earlier and the town is not full. December and January are the warmest and busiest, because that is when Namibia takes its school holidays on the coast.
