# Top 10 Things To Do in Stavanger

Stavanger, Norway · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Stavanger is Norway’s oil capital and the country’s easiest fjord base. Preikestolen is forty kilometres out, the Lysefjord boat leaves from the middle of town, and the quarter behind the quay holds 173 white wooden houses. Rain is part of the deal.

## Quick answer

Give the first day to the Lysefjord. The Rødne boat leaves Strandkaien and is back in three and a half hours, or hike Preikestolen instead and take the whole day. Keep the second for the city, which is small: Gamle Stavanger, the cathedral, the Petroleum Museum and dinner on Pedersgata. A third buys Kjerag, a Jæren beach or Utstein Kloster.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Jun · Jul · Aug
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** NOK 1,400–2,600
- **Language:** Norwegian, with English spoken almost everywhere
- **Getting around:** The centre on foot, Kolumbus buses and fjord ferries past it
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.edgeofnorway.com/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Stavanger

### 1. Preikestolen

Hike · Preikestolen Fjellstue, Jørpeland, Rogaland

A flat cliff 604 metres above the Lysefjord, and the reason most people book Stavanger at all. The trail from Preikestolen Fjellstue runs 8 km return with about 500 metres of climb, four hours at a steady pace. Go before nine or after three: the middle of the day is a queue.

- **Time:** 4 hr
- **Cost:** Parking 275 NOK
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Boots, not trainers. The rock holds water long after rain

### 2. The Lysefjord by boat

Fjord · Strandkaien, 4005 Stavanger

Forty kilometres of fjord under walls topping 1,000 metres, seen from the water instead of the summit. Rødne’s boat takes three to three and a half hours from Strandkaien, passing the Vagabond’s Cave and nosing into Hengjanefossen. Preikestolen without the boots.

- **Time:** 3.5 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** MS Rygerelektra is the electric boat and much the quieter ride

Links: [Rødne Fjord Cruise](https://rodne.no/en/fjord-experiences/stavanger/fjordcruise-lysefjord-preikestolen/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Gamle Stavanger

Neighbourhood · Øvre Strandgate, 4005 Stavanger

173 wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, all painted white, on cobbles climbing the west side of Vågen. Postwar plans had them cleared until the city architect Einar Hedén made the case for keeping them. People still live here, so walk it quietly.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Start at Strandkaien, climb, and carry on to IDDIS at the top

### 4. Norwegian Petroleum Museum

Museum · Kjeringholmen, 4005 Stavanger

The museum that explains why a city this size eats this well. Drill bits, a diving bell and a section of rig deck, plus a straight account of what the 1969 Ekofisk find did to Norway. The building juts into the harbour on its own promontory.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Rainy afternoons
- **Tip:** The outdoor rig deck is part of the ticket. Go out in weather

### 5. Stavanger Cathedral

Landmark · Haakon VIIs gate 2, 4005 Stavanger

Norway’s oldest cathedral, begun under Bishop Reinald around 1125 and finished by about 1150 in Anglo-Norman style, with a Gothic chancel added after the fire of 1272. A restoration running from 2015 to 2024 reopened it for the city’s 900th year.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday mornings
- **Tip:** The nave columns are the oldest thing standing in the city

### 6. Sverd i fjell

Monument · Møllebukta, Hafrsfjord, Stavanger

Three bronze swords, ten metres tall, driven into rock on the shore of Hafrsfjord where Harald Fairhair won the battle that made one kingdom of Norway in 872. Fritz Røed made them and King Olav V unveiled them in 1983. They are set in stone so they cannot be drawn.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** The shore path carries on around the fjord if you have an hour

### 7. Øvre Holmegate

Street · Øvre Holmegate, 4006 Stavanger

One block repainted to a scheme by the Scottish artist Craig Flannagan, each front given its own set of colours down to the window frames. Locals call it Fargegaten and it is among Norway’s most photographed streets. It is also fifty metres of good coffee and bars.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Bøker og Børst at number 32 has the back garden

Links: [Fjord Norway](https://www.fjordnorway.com/en/attractions/stavanger?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. IDDIS

Museum · Øvre Strandgate 88, 4005 Stavanger

Two museums in one former sardine cannery: the canning trade that built Stavanger before oil, and the printworks that grew up to make its labels. Iddis is the local word for those labels. The smoke oven is lit through the year and you can taste the sprats.

- **Time:** 1.5 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Ten minutes on foot from the centre, through Gamle Stavanger

Links: [IDDIS](https://www.iddis.no/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Kjeragbolten

Hike · Øygardstøl, Lysebotn, Rogaland

A boulder wedged in a chasm above the Lysefjord, reached by an 11 km round trip with 800 metres of climb and steep sections strung with chains. Six to ten hours, and a serious day. The road in from Sirdal opens around mid-May and closes with the snow.

- **Time:** 6–10 hr
- **Cost:** Parking fee
- **Best at:** Jun to Sep
- **Tip:** Check the road and the forecast the night before you drive out

Links: [Visit Norway](https://www.visitnorway.com/places-to-go/fjord-norway/ryfylke/the-lysefjord-area/hiking-to-kjerag/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Solastranden

Beach · Solastranden, Sola, Rogaland

A wide arc of pale sand at Sola, shallow enough for children and open enough for kitesurfers. It is the northernmost of the four big Jæren beaches, all of them inside a landscape conservation area protected since 1977. The wind is the point, not the temperature.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Jun to Aug
- **Tip:** Bring a windproof layer even in July, the beach is fully exposed

## Stavanger travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Stavanger?

Three. One for the Lysefjord, by boat or on the Preikestolen trail. One for the city, which is walkable end to end: Gamle Stavanger, the cathedral, the Petroleum Museum and dinner on Pedersgata. The third buys Kjerag, a Jæren beach or Utstein Kloster.

### Do you have to hike Preikestolen to see the Lysefjord?

No. Rødne’s boat leaves Strandkaien in the middle of town and is back in three and a half hours, passing under Preikestolen rather than standing on it. It also reaches Hengjanefossen and the Vagabond’s Cave, which the trail does not.

### When is the best time to visit Stavanger?

June to September. The Preikestolen trail is clear of snow, the road to Kjerag opens around mid-May and shuts in October or November, and August is the warmest month. May is the driest month of the year and October the wettest.

### Is Stavanger expensive?

Yes, by most standards. Norway is a high-cost country and this is its energy capital, so hotels and restaurants price accordingly. Budget NOK 1,400 to 2,600 a day. The hikes, the old town, the cathedral and every Jæren beach are free.

### How do you get from the airport into Stavanger?

Flybussen runs from Stavanger Airport, Sola to the bus and train station in 25 to 30 minutes, and the ticket then covers 90 minutes on Kolumbus buses across the region. A taxi is quicker and costs several times more.
