# Top 10 Things To Do in Sopot

Sopot, Poland · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Sopot is Poland’s seaside resort, not a suburb of Gdańsk. It has been a bathing town since the 1820s and a legally recognised health resort since 1999, drawing brine from 800 metres under the beach. The pier is the longest wooden one in Europe, and the sand runs the length of the town.

## Quick answer

Walk the pier first, then climb the lighthouse for the view back over the roofs. Drink the brine free at the pump room on Plac Zdrojowy, then take Monciak inland past the Crooked House. Afternoons are for the beach, evenings for the bars between Monte Cassino and Grunwaldzka. Two days covers the resort. A third buys Gdańsk, Gdynia or the Hel peninsula, all on the same commuter line.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Jun · Jul · Aug
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $70–140
- **Language:** Polish
- **Getting around:** The centre and the pier on foot, SKM trains along the coast
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://visit.sopot.pl/en/resort?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Sopot

### 1. Sopot Pier (Molo)

Landmark · Plac Zdrojowy 2, 81-720 Sopot

511.5 metres of timber running straight out into the Gulf of Gdańsk, the longest wooden pier in Europe. It reached that length in 1927 and gained a marina for more than a hundred yachts at the seaward end in 2011. Entry is ticketed through the summer season and free the rest of the year.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed in summer, free off-season
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Walk out before ten. The boards are empty and the light is behind you looking back at the town

Links: [Website](https://molo.sopot.pl/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 2. Bohaterów Monte Cassino

Street · ul. Bohaterów Monte Cassino, 81-759 Sopot

Monciak to anyone who lives here: a pedestrian run of terrace bars, ice cream counters and street musicians between the railway station and the pier. It is the resort’s spine and its loudest street. Walk it twice, once in the morning for the villas and once after dark for the noise.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** After dark
- **Tip:** The quieter cafes sit one block off it, on Grunwaldzka and Bema

### 3. The beach at Łazienki Południowe

Beach · al. Franciszka Mamuszki, Sopot

Sopot’s sand runs the whole length of the town, wide, pale and shelving gently. The stretch immediately south of the pier is the busiest and the best served, with lifeguards through the summer bathing season. The Baltic peaks at 18 to 20°C in August, which is as warm as it gets.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Walk fifteen minutes either side of the pier and the crowd thins out sharply

### 4. Krzywy Domek, the Crooked House

Architecture · ul. Bohaterów Monte Cassino 53, 81-767 Sopot

A building of about 4,000 square metres that looks like it melted, designed by Szotyńscy & Zaleski and finished in 2004. It is part of the Rezydent complex and holds bars and shops rather than a museum, so the visit is the facade. CNN once listed it among the strangest buildings in Europe.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** Stand across the street rather than under it. The distortion only reads from a distance

### 5. Opera Leśna

Venue · ul. Stanisława Moniuszki 12, 81-829 Sopot

An amphitheatre cut into the forest above the town, opened in 1909 and roofed over in a rebuild completed in 2012. It seats 5,047 and is the stage the Sopot festival has used for decades. Early Wagner cycles here earned it the name Bayreuth of the North.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed for events
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** Check the programme before you climb. Outside a concert night there is little to see

### 6. Sopot Lighthouse

Landmark · Plac Zdrojowy, Sopot

Thirty-three metres of brick, built in 1903 as part of the town’s balneological institute rather than as a working sea light. About 140 steps climb to a gallery with a full circle of view: the pier, the beach both ways, and the roofs behind. The stair is wide and the climb is short.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Clear afternoon
- **Tip:** Go up after the pier, not before. You will recognise everything you are looking at

### 7. The brine pump room

Spa · Plac Zdrojowy 2, 81-720 Sopot

Sopot draws a 4.3% bromide and iodide brine from St Adalbert’s Spring, 800 metres under the town, and pours it free on the top floor of the Spa House beside the pier. It is salty and iron-edged and not pleasant. It is also the clearest answer to why this is a health resort and not just a beach.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Take the lift. The pump room is above the tourist information desk, not on the ground floor

### 8. Muzeum Sopotu

Museum · ul. Poniatowskiego 8, 81-724 Sopot

A seafront villa built in 1903 for the merchant Ernst August Claaszen, opened as the city museum in 2001 on Sopot’s centenary. The ground-floor rooms are kept as a spa-era interior, which is the point: this is how the town’s villas looked when people came here to take the cure.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed, free on Sundays
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays, and the summer hours run two hours later than the winter ones

Links: [Website](https://muzeumsopotu.pl/plan-your-visit/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Grodzisko, the early medieval hillfort

Historic site · ul. Jana Jerzego Haffnera 63, Sopot

A ringed and moated stronghold in beech woods above the town, occupied between the 8th and 10th centuries to watch the coastal sea lane. It is now an open-air branch of the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk, with the excavated finds shown in a pavilion at the foot of the ramparts.

- **Time:** 1 hr 30 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays. It is uphill from the centre, so pair it with the Northern Park walk

Links: [Website](https://archeologia.pl/en/archeologia_oddzialy/grodzisko-w-sopocie/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Sofitel Grand Sopot

Landmark · ul. Powstańców Warszawy 12/14, 81-718 Sopot

The 1927 Kasino Hotel, designed by Otto Kloeppel and built when Sopot was being sold as the Monaco of the Baltic. It is still a working hotel, so the way to see it is a drink on the seafront terrace. The Art Deco frontage facing the beach is the best piece of resort architecture here.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free to walk past
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** The terrace bar takes non-residents, and the lobby is worth the detour on a wet day

## Sopot travel FAQ

### Is Sopot worth a stay, or is it a day trip from Gdańsk?

Both work, but a stay is the better read. The pier, the beach and the bars run on their own clock, and watching the last SKM back to Gdańsk cuts the evening short. Two nights lets you do the resort properly and still take the train in for a day in the Main Town.

### When can you actually swim in the Baltic here?

Roughly late June to early September. The sea peaks at 18 to 20°C in August, which is cold by Mediterranean standards and normal by Baltic ones. Lifeguarded bathing areas operate through the summer season. Outside it, the beach is for walking.

### Do you have to pay to walk on the pier?

In the summer season, yes. Entry is ticketed through the high season and free the rest of the year, when the barriers come off. Prices are set year by year, so check molo.sopot.pl before you go rather than trusting a figure printed in a guide.

### How do you get from Gdańsk airport to Sopot?

Bus 122 runs from the terminal into central Sopot. The alternative is the PKM train to Gdańsk Wrzeszcz and a change onto the northbound SKM. Both take about 40 minutes, and both cost a few złoty rather than the price of a taxi.

### What is there to do in Sopot when it rains?

The Sopot Museum, the state art gallery in the Spa House and the Grodzisko exhibition pavilion take an hour each. The aquapark at Zamkowa Góra has pools and a sauna complex. Failing all three, the Grand Hotel lobby was built for exactly this weather.
