# Top 10 Things To Do in Sa Pa

Sa Pa, Vietnam · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 13 min read

The terraces are why people come and why the photographs never quite land: Muong Hoa is 15 kilometres of stepped hillside, and you have to walk into it. Sa Pa town itself is loud, half-built and useful. The valley starts 20 minutes below it.

## Quick answer

Sa Pa is Vietnam's mountain town, about 1,600 metres up in the Hoang Lien range and built by the French to escape the delta heat. You come here to walk. Down the Muong Hoa valley through Hmong and Giay villages, up Fansipan by cable car or on foot, and out to the ethnic markets that run one day a week each. Give it three days.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Sep · Oct · Apr
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** ₫700,000–1,800,000
- **Language:** Vietnamese, Hmong and Dao
- **Getting around:** On foot, by motorbike taxi, by hired car
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://vietnam.travel/places-to-go/northern-vietnam/sapa?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Sa Pa

### 1. Ride the cable car to the summit of Fansipan

Landmark · Sun World Fansipan Legend, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

Fansipan is 3,147 metres, the highest point in Indochina, and the Sun World cable car covers the last six kilometres of it in about 15 minutes. The summit is a spine of Buddhist statuary and, most days, cloud. Go on the first car: the mountain clears early and closes in by lunchtime.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** ₫850,000
- **Best at:** First car, 7:30am
- **Tip:** A surcharge applies on Saturdays and public holidays. Cards are accepted at the base station.

### 2. Walk the Muong Hoa valley to Lao Chai and Ta Van

Trek · Muong Hoa valley, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

The classic Sa Pa walk: roughly 12 kilometres down the valley through Y Linh Ho and Black Hmong Lao Chai to Giay Ta Van, with the terraces above you the whole way. It is a descent, not a climb. Hire a village guide in town rather than joining a coach group.

- **Time:** 5-6 hr
- **Cost:** Guide from ₫500,000
- **Best at:** Mid-September, for the gold
- **Tip:** Cars run back up from Ta Van, so you only have to walk the downhill half.

### 3. Bac Ha Sunday market

Market · Bac Ha, Lao Cai

The largest ethnic-minority market in the northwest, 110 kilometres east of Sa Pa and worth the two-and-a-half-hour drive one morning a week. Flower Hmong dominate it, in the brightest dress in Vietnam. Trading opens around 7:30am and thins by early afternoon.

- **Time:** Full day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunday, 8am
- **Tip:** Leave Sa Pa before six. Shared minibuses go from the square; book the seat the night before.

### 4. Cat Cat village

Village · Cat Cat, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

The nearest Hmong village to town, three kilometres down a stepped path, and now firmly a paid attraction: a ticket gate, staged dance, a waterfall and a great deal of rented costume. It works as a first walk and a way to read the valley's shape. For village life, go further out.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** ₫150,000
- **Best at:** Before 9am
- **Tip:** Cash only at the gate, and the climb back up is steeper than the way down.

### 5. Climb Ham Rong Mountain from the square

Viewpoint · Ham Rong, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

Dragon's Jaw rises straight out of the town centre, a laid-out path climbing through orchid beds and rock cuts to a viewpoint near 1,800 metres. It is the one place you see Sa Pa's own shape: town, valley and the Hoang Lien wall behind it.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** ₫70,000
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Open 7am to 6pm. The last stretch is stone steps, so allow 40 minutes to the top.

### 6. Drive the O Quy Ho pass to Heaven's Gate

Viewpoint · O Quy Ho Pass, QL4D, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

The road west over Tram Ton tops out at 2,073 metres, the highest pass in Vietnam. The Sa Pa side is usually under cloud while the Lai Chau side is clear, which is the whole point of going. Heaven's Gate is the paid terrace at the summit.

- **Time:** 3 hr
- **Cost:** ₫120,000 at Heaven's Gate
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Silver Waterfall and Love Waterfall sit on the same road, so take all three in one run.

### 7. Take a Red Dao herbal bath at Ta Phin

Village · Ta Phin, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

Twelve kilometres northeast of town, Ta Phin is Red Dao country, and the bath is the reason to go: a wooden tub of forest herbs steeped hot, taken after a walk rather than instead of one. In the village it costs a fraction of the Sa Pa spa price.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Bath from ₫100,000
- **Best at:** After a trek
- **Tip:** Twenty minutes is the sensible limit. The water is hotter than it looks.

### 8. Silver Waterfall on the Lai Chau road

Waterfall · Thac Bac, QL4D, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

A 200-metre fall straight off the road 12 kilometres west of town, with a staircase up one flank. It takes 20 minutes and costs almost nothing, which is the right expectation to arrive with. Flow is heaviest from May to August and thin by late winter.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** ₫20,000
- **Best at:** May to August
- **Tip:** Open 8:30am to 5pm. Love Waterfall is two kilometres further on and charges ₫70,000.

### 9. The stone church and the Saturday love market

Landmark · Sa Pa town square, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

Holy Rosary Church has stood on the square since 1895 and is the most intact thing the French left in these hills. On Saturday evenings the square fills with pipes, lip lutes and dancing, the old courtship market restaged for an audience but genuinely attended.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Saturday evening
- **Tip:** The square is where the minibuses and motorbike taxis gather, so use it to fix the next day.

### 10. The Muong Hoa mountain train to the cable car

Ride · Muong Hoa station, Sa Pa, Lao Cai

A funicular from the edge of town, through two tunnels to the Fansipan cable-car station, about four minutes with a window onto the valley. It is the better approach and it saves a taxi. Not compulsory: the cable-car base is a short drive from the square.

- **Time:** 15 min
- **Cost:** ₫200,000 return
- **Best at:** With the first cable car
- **Tip:** Buy it bundled with the cable-car ticket rather than separately at the platform.

- The town sits around 1,600 metres up, which is why the delta empties into it every summer.
- Most of Sa Pa is Hmong, Dao, Giay or Tay rather than Kinh, and four languages are in daily use.
- The Muong Hoa valley holds a field of carved boulders that nobody has firmly dated.
- Snow falls on the town perhaps once a year, and it makes the national news when it does.

## Sa Pa travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Sa Pa?

Three. One for the Muong Hoa valley walk, one for Fansipan and the O Quy Ho pass, and a third if you want Bac Ha's Sunday market, which eats a whole day on its own. Two days works if you skip the market.

### When do the rice terraces turn gold?

Mid-September to early October. The other picture, flooded terraces reflecting the sky, comes in late May and June when the fields are filled for planting. July and August are green, lush and wet.

### Is the Fansipan cable car worth it, or should you walk?

Take the cable car unless trekking is the point of the trip. It is 15 minutes against two days on foot, and the summit trek wants a guide and real hill fitness. Adult tickets are ₫850,000, with a surcharge on Saturdays and public holidays.

### Train or bus from Hanoi?

Bus, on balance. The expressway put Sa Pa five and a half to six hours from Hanoi, door to door. The night train runs about eight hours to Lao Cai and then another hour up the mountain, but you sleep through it and arrive at dawn.

### Do you need a guide to trek in Sa Pa?

For the Muong Hoa valley, no. The path is obvious and the villages are close together. Hire one anyway: Hmong and Dao guides read the weather, get you inside homes you would walk straight past, and it is the clearest way the money reaches the valley.
