# Top 10 Things To Do in San Salvador

San Salvador, El Salvador · North America · By Wimup Editorial, 15 min read

San Salvador sits in a valley under its own volcano, and the crater rim is a short drive from the centre. Between the two is a capital rebuilt after earthquakes and a war, where the landmarks are a modernist church, a martyr’s crypt and a library that never closes.

## Quick answer

Give the city two or three days. Start at El Boquerón, on the rim of the San Salvador volcano, then come down for the historic centre: the cathedral crypt where Óscar Romero is buried, El Rosario’s wall of coloured glass, and the national library that stays open around the clock. Day two is the museums in San Benito. Add a third for Joya de Cerén or the coast.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Nov · Dec · Jan · Feb
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $50–95
- **Language:** Spanish
- **Getting around:** Ride-hailing apps and buses
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://elsalvador.travel/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in San Salvador

### 1. Parque Nacional El Boquerón

National park · Cima del volcán de San Salvador, Santa Tecla, La Libertad

The crater of the San Salvador volcano, reached by a road that climbs out of the city into coffee farms and cool air. Paved trails run to three viewpoints over the crater floor and the smaller cone inside it, El Boqueroncito. Cloud settles by mid-afternoon, so go early.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** $2 for foreign visitors
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The restaurants along the approach road are half the reason locals drive up

### 2. Catedral Metropolitana and the Romero crypt

Landmark · Av. Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero y 2a Av. Sur, Centro Histórico

The cathedral faces Plaza Barrios, and the reason to go in is below it. Óscar Romero, the archbishop shot at the altar in 1980 and canonised in 2018, lies in the crypt under a bronze figure by Paolo Borghi. The square outside is where mourners were fired on at his funeral.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** It is a working cathedral with Mass through the day, so dress accordingly

### 3. Iglesia El Rosario

Church · Calle Delgado y 6a Av. Sur, Plaza Libertad, Centro Histórico

Rubén Martínez finished it in 1964 and it looks like nothing else in the region: a bare concrete half-barrel with no columns, its whole curved flank set with French stained glass. Come between late morning and mid-afternoon, when the sun drags the colour across the floor.

- **Time:** 30 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** José Matías Delgado, the priest behind the 1811 call for independence, is buried inside

### 4. Museo Nacional de Antropología

Museum · Av. La Revolución, Colonia San Benito

The national collection, arranged as six rooms on how people here lived rather than as a parade of objects: settlement, farming, craft and exchange, religion, burial. It is the fastest way to make sense of Joya de Cerén and Tazumal before you drive out to either.

- **Time:** 2 hours
- **Cost:** $3 for visitors from outside Central America
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays, so keep the San Benito museums for a Tuesday to Sunday

Links: [Official website](https://mitur.gob.sv/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Puerta del Diablo

Viewpoint · Cantón El Divisadero, Panchimalco

A split rock on the ridge above Los Planes de Renderos, 1,250 m up, with the Pacific on one side and the valley on the other. You can scramble the outcrops or stay on the terrace and eat. It was also a body-dumping ground during the war, which nobody up there hides.

- **Time:** 2–3 hours
- **Cost:** Free to enter
- **Best at:** Clear mornings
- **Tip:** Pair it with the pupusa stalls at Los Planes de Renderos, a kilometre down the road

### 6. Biblioteca Nacional de El Salvador

Library · 4a Calle Oriente y Av. Cuscatlán, Plaza Gerardo Barrios, Centro Histórico

A 24,000 m² library on the main square, built with Chinese funding and opened in November 2023. Entry is free and the doors do not close: it is billed as the first national library in the world to run 24 hours a day. Go up for the reading floors and the view over the plaza.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Any hour
- **Tip:** The upper floors look straight across at the cathedral

Links: [Official website](https://centrohistorico.gob.sv/destinos-turisticos/binaes-biblioteca-nacional-de-el-salvador/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Centro Monseñor Romero, UCA

Memorial · Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas, Autopista Sur

On 16 November 1989 soldiers killed six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter on this campus. The centre keeps the martyrs’ room, the chapel and the rose garden planted where they died. Free guided visits run in English and Spanish, and they are the point of coming.

- **Time:** 1–2 hours
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday mornings
- **Tip:** Closed Sundays, and Saturday visits end before noon

Links: [Official website](https://www.uca.edu.sv/cmr/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Teatro Nacional

Theatre · Calle Delgado, Plaza Morazan, Centro Histórico

Opened in March 1917 to a design by the French architect Daniel Beylard, and knocked about since: it has served as a cinema and as a city hall, and the 2001 earthquakes closed it for years. The restoration took the interior back to its original colours, chromatic test patches and all.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Tours by arrangement
- **Best at:** Weekday afternoons
- **Tip:** It faces Plaza Morazán, two minutes from the cathedral and the library

Links: [Official website](https://centrohistorico.gob.sv/destinos-turisticos/teatro-nacional/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. MARTE, Museo de Arte de El Salvador

Museum · Final Av. La Revolución, Colonia San Benito

The country’s modern and contemporary collection, a short walk from the anthropology museum and the better of the two if you want to see what Salvadoran painters made of the twentieth century. The temporary shows carry it, so check what is hanging before you go.

- **Time:** 1–2 hours
- **Cost:** $1.50, free on Sundays
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays, like its neighbour across the avenue

Links: [Website](https://museomarte.org/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo

Monument · Plaza El Salvador del Mundo, Alameda Roosevelt y Paseo General Escalón

Christ on a globe, raised in 1942 at the junction where Alameda Roosevelt becomes Paseo General Escalón. It is the image the country puts on its own postcards, and the plaza around it is where Salvadorans gather for everything from Mass to protest.

- **Time:** 20 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The plaza is a traffic island, so cross at the lights rather than cutting across

## San Salvador travel FAQ

### When is the best time to visit San Salvador?

November to April, the dry season. Afternoons stay clear, which matters when the volcano rim and Puerta del Diablo are both viewpoints. From May to October the rain arrives in heavy afternoon bursts rather than all day, and the hills turn green.

### How many days do you need?

Two or three. One for the historic centre, one for the volcano and the San Benito museums, and a third if you want Joya de Cerén, Suchitoto or the coast. The country is small, so most visitors base themselves here and drive out each day.

### Is San Salvador safe to visit?

The US State Department reissued El Salvador at Level 1, its lowest advisory tier, in June 2026, after years at the opposite end of the scale. Big-city rules still apply: take ride-hailing rather than street taxis, keep your phone away on buses, and do not walk the centre after dark.

### What currency does El Salvador use?

The US dollar, adopted in 2001. Bitcoin was made legal tender in 2021 and that status was withdrawn in January 2025 under an agreement with the IMF, so acceptance is voluntary and, outside El Zonte, uncommon. Bring small notes, because fifties are hard to break.

### How do you get from the airport into the city?

The airport is about 40 km south of San Salvador at Comalapa. Ride-hailing apps work from the terminal and hotel transfers are straightforward to arrange in advance. Allow an hour for the drive, more if you land in the evening peak.
