# Top 10 Things To Do in Salta

Salta, Argentina · South America · By Wimup Editorial, 15 min read

Argentina's northwest capital sits at 1,152 m in the Lerma valley, ringed by cloud forest and an hour from the Andes. Colonial Salta is compact and walkable, the folk music is live seven nights a week, and the desert starts where the suburbs stop.

## Quick answer

Give Salta three or four days. Two belong to the city: the Inca mummies at the MAAM, the cable car up Cerro San Bernardo, the Cabildo on Plaza 9 de Julio and a late night on Calle Balcarce. The rest belong to the province, either south to the Torrontés vineyards at Cafayate or northwest over the Cuesta del Obispo and up to Salinas Grandes.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Apr · May · Sep · Oct
- **Ideal length:** 3 to 4 days
- **Budget per day:** $45–90
- **Language:** Spanish
- **Getting around:** On foot in the centre, SAETA buses need a local card
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://visitsalta.ar/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Salta

### 1. Meet the Llullaillaco children at the MAAM

Museum · Bartolomé Mitre 77, Salta, Argentina

Three Inca children were found frozen near the 6,739 m summit of Llullaillaco in 1999, and they are the reason this museum exists. One is displayed at a time, rotated, in a cooled cylinder; around them sit the textiles and offerings buried alongside. It is a quiet, careful room, and it is the single best hour in Salta.

- **Time:** 1 to 2 hr
- **Cost:** Paid, higher tier for foreigners
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays, last entry 18:30

Links: [Website](https://maam.gob.ar/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 2. Ride the cable car up Cerro San Bernardo

Viewpoint · Av. San Martín at Av. Hipólito Yrigoyen, Salta, Argentina

The teleférico climbs 284 m over roughly a kilometre of cable and lands on a terraced summit with the whole Lerma valley below. Ten minutes up, and the stone staircase down behind the Güemes monument takes about forty. Go late in the day, when the valley light is worth the queue.

- **Time:** 1 to 2 hr
- **Cost:** Paid, return ticket
- **Best at:** Two hours before sunset
- **Tip:** Daily 09:00 to 19:30, last ascent 19:00

### 3. Spend a night at a peña on Calle Balcarce

Live music · Calle Balcarce, Salta, Argentina

A peña is a room with a stage, long tables, empanadas and a bombo drum, and Salta runs them every night of the week. The Balcarce strip by the old station holds most of them. Nothing starts before 22:00 and the good sets land after midnight, so eat late and plan a slow morning.

- **Time:** Evening
- **Cost:** Cover plus dinner
- **Best at:** After 22:00
- **Tip:** Friday and Saturday fill up, book a table

### 4. Take the Tren a las Nubes to the Polvorilla viaduct

Rail journey · San Antonio de los Cobres, Salta Province, Argentina

The trip runs as a coach up the Quebrada del Toro to San Antonio de los Cobres, then the train out to the La Polvorilla viaduct: 224 m of curved steel, 64 m above the ravine, at 4,220 m. It is a full day that starts before dawn, and it is thin air the whole way. Book weeks ahead in high season.

- **Time:** Full day
- **Cost:** Paid, foreign and local fares differ
- **Best at:** April to November
- **Tip:** Coca tea and a slow first hour help with the altitude

Links: [Website](https://trenalasnubes.com.ar/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Stand under the tallest church tower in South America

Basilica · Caseros at Córdoba, Salta, Argentina

San Francisco is terracotta, ivory and white, and its bell tower runs to 54 m, the tallest on the continent. The Franciscans have held the plot since Salta was laid out in 1582; fire took the church in 1772 and the rebuild is what stands. National Historic Monument since 1941, minor basilica since 1992.

- **Time:** 30 to 45 min
- **Cost:** Free, guided convent tour paid
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The guided tour is the only way into the cloister

### 6. Read the north's history inside the Cabildo

Museum · Caseros 549, Salta, Argentina

The two-storey arcade on the south side of Plaza 9 de Julio is the best preserved colonial town hall in Argentina, and it holds the Museo Histórico del Norte. Colonial furniture, sacred art, coins and carriages, plus the balcony over the plaza. Give it an hour, and start upstairs.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Low
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays, check hours before a late visit

### 7. Work out who Güemes was, at the Museo Güemes

Museum · España 730, Salta, Argentina

Every second street, the airport and a mounted bronze carry his name, and this house is where it makes sense: Martín Miguel de Güemes held the northern border against the royalists with gaucho cavalry and died of a wound in 1821. Ten rooms, told with projection and staging rather than glass cases.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Low
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 19:00

Links: [Website](https://museoguemes.gob.ar/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Sit in the cathedral with the images of the Milagro

Cathedral · España 596, Salta, Argentina

The pink and gold front on the north side of the plaza holds the images of the Señor y la Virgen del Milagro, carried through the streets every September since a 1692 earthquake stopped short of the city. Güemes lies in the side chapel with the other northern commanders. Free, and rarely empty.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Cover shoulders, and stay clear during Mass

### 9. Eat lunch upstairs at the Mercado San Miguel

Market · Av. San Martín at Florida, Salta, Argentina

The city market is the cheapest good meal in Salta: empanadas by the half dozen, humitas, goat cheese, spices and rough regional wine, with textile and leather stalls along the edges. Go at midday, when the food counters are running and the produce halls are still full.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free to browse
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** Closed Sundays, and it shuts through the afternoon siesta

### 10. Find the carved door of the Convento San Bernardo

Landmark · Caseros 73, Salta, Argentina

The oldest building in the city is a working Carmelite convent, so the nuns stay behind the wall and visitors get the street front: whitewashed adobe and a carob door carved by Indigenous craftsmen in 1762. Two minutes of looking, on the walk between the plaza and the cable car station.

- **Time:** 15 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Any time
- **Tip:** Exterior only, the order is cloistered

## Salta travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Salta?

Three to four. Two days cover the city itself, which is small enough to walk: the MAAM, the Cabildo, the cable car and a peña night. Add a day for Cafayate to the south, and a day for Purmamarca and Salinas Grandes to the northwest.

### What is the best time of year to visit Salta?

April to June and September to November. Those are the dry months, with clear skies and mild days. December to March is the northwest's rainy season, when mountain roads to Cachi and the Quebrada can close for hours after a storm.

### Is the Tren a las Nubes worth the money?

If you want the La Polvorilla viaduct at 4,220 m and would rather not drive the altiplano yourself, yes. It is a full day, most of it on a coach, and the rail section is the short part. Hiring a car over the Cuesta del Obispo costs less and shows you more.

### How do you get from Salta airport to the centre?

The airport is roughly 10 km southwest, so a taxi or booked remise takes about 20 minutes and is the simplest option. SAETA bus lines 8A and 6 pass the terminal, but they need a SAETA card, which you have to buy inside the airport first.

### Do you need to worry about altitude in Salta?

Not in the city, which sits at 1,152 m. The day trips are the issue: Salinas Grandes crosses 4,170 m and the La Polvorilla viaduct is 4,220 m. Go slowly on those days, drink water, skip the alcohol the night before, and take the coca tea if it is offered.
