# Top 10 Things To Do in Punta del Este

Punta del Este, Uruguay · South America · By Wimup Editorial, 15 min read

Punta del Este is a narrow peninsula where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic, and the coast either side of it is the trip. West is flat water and sunsets, east is surf and a concrete hand in the sand, and the road out to José Ignacio is where the good cooking went.

## Quick answer

Start on the peninsula: La Mano at Parada 1, the sea lions at the working port, the 1860 lighthouse. Then drive. Casapueblo sits 13 km west at Punta Ballena, La Barra's bouncing bridge is over the river to the east, and José Ignacio, 40 km on, is where the region eats. Three days covers it, four with a winery.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Dec · Jan · Feb · Mar
- **Ideal length:** 3–4 days
- **Budget per day:** $110–200
- **Language:** Spanish
- **Getting around:** A rental car, the coast road is the point
- **Tourism board:** [↗ Website](https://www.maldonado.gub.uy/descubre-maldonado/informacion-turista?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Punta del Este

### 1. La Mano

Landmark · Parada 1, Playa Brava, 20100 Punta del Este, Uruguay

Five concrete fingers breaking the sand at Parada 1, carved in six days by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal for an open-air sculpture meeting in February 1982. He meant them as a drowning warning on a beach with real surf. Come early, before the queue for the photograph forms.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Parada 1, where the Brava rambla starts

### 2. Casapueblo

Museum · Punta Ballena, 20003 Maldonado, Uruguay

Carlos Páez Vilaró built this white cascade into the Punta Ballena cliff as his own summer house and workshop, without a straight line in it, and it grew into a museum, gallery and hotel. The terrace is where people gather for the sunset. It is 13 km west of the peninsula, so drive.

- **Time:** 1–2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Check the day's closing time before you go

### 3. Puerto de Punta del Este

Coast · Rambla Artigas, 20100 Punta del Este, Uruguay

The working port is the peninsula's best free hour. Fishing boats unload alongside the yachts, there is a small fish market, and sea lions haul out on the rocks below waiting for the scraps that go in the water. Lo de Tere and Guappa look straight onto it.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The sea lions gather where the catch is cleaned

### 4. Isla de Lobos

Coast · Boats leave from Puerto de Punta del Este, Uruguay

The rock eight kilometres offshore carries one of the region's largest sea lion colonies, and the boats out of the port spend around forty minutes circling it. Landing is not allowed: it is a protected reserve, so you watch from the water. The crossing is exposed, so take the sea seriously.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed tour
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** No landing, so bring the long lens

### 5. José Ignacio

Coast · José Ignacio, 20402 Maldonado, Uruguay

Forty kilometres east, a lighthouse village of sand streets and no traffic lights that quietly became the region's best eating. Parador La Huella has been on the beach since 2001 and books out weeks ahead in January. Come for lunch, stay for the walk out to the point.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Free to visit
- **Best at:** Lunch
- **Tip:** Book La Huella before you drive out

### 6. Bodega Garzón

Winery · Ruta 9 km 175, Garzón, Maldonado, Uruguay

The winery that put Maldonado on the wine map, and Wine Enthusiast's New World Winery of the Year in 2019. Tastings, vineyard tours by e-bike or horse-drawn carriage, and a restaurant built around open fire. Book the tasting and the table together through the winery.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Lunch
- **Tip:** An hour inland, so give it the afternoon

### 7. Isla Gorriti

Coast · Boats leave from Puerto de Punta del Este, Uruguay

Fifteen minutes out of the port and you are on a pine-covered island two and a half kilometres offshore, with two swimming beaches, forest paths and the ruins of an 18th-century Spanish gun battery. It is listed national historic heritage, and the water is the calmest in the bay.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Ticketed boat
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Playa Honda is the quiet side

Links: [Website](https://www.islagorriti.com/en/home-english/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Puente Leonel Viera

Landmark · La Barra, 20001 Maldonado, Uruguay

The wavy bridge over the Maldonado river, opened in 1965 and designed by Leonel Viera, a builder with no training in engineering or architecture. Cross it at the limit and your stomach lifts twice. A second, identical span was added alongside in 1999 to take the traffic.

- **Time:** 15 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Park on the La Barra side and walk back over it

### 9. Arboretum Lussich

Gardens · Ruta Panoramica, Punta Ballena, Maldonado, Uruguay

A 192-hectare hillside forest above Punta Ballena, most of which was handed to Maldonado in December 1979 and opened to the public. Around six kilometres of easy trails, free to walk, with a visitor centre that gives out the map and runs guided walks through the day.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Start at the visitor centre for the trail map

### 10. Faro de Punta del Este

Landmark · Calle 2 de Febrero, Península, 20100 Punta del Este, Uruguay

The white tower with the red and white banded dome has marked the tip of the peninsula since March 1860. There are 144 steps inside it and the light sits 44 metres above the sea. The plaza around it is the quietest corner of the old town, minutes from either beach.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free to see
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Walk it as part of the peninsula loop

## Punta del Este travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Punta del Este?

Three days covers the peninsula, Punta Ballena and La Barra. A fourth lets you give José Ignacio a proper afternoon, or drive inland to a winery. Less than three and you spend it in the car, because the good parts are spread along 50 km of coast.

### When is the best time to visit Punta del Este?

December to February is the season, with highs around 27C and sea temperatures of 21 to 23C. January is the sold-out, expensive peak. March keeps the warm water and loses most of the crowd, and from April much of the resort closes for the winter.

### Is Punta del Este expensive?

In season, yes. Budget roughly $110 to $200 per person per day for a mid-range room, meals out and a car, and expect prices to climb over Christmas and through January. Outside the summer months the same trip costs a fraction of that.

### Do you need a car in Punta del Este?

Not on the peninsula, where the port, the lighthouse and both beaches are minutes apart on foot. Everywhere else, yes: Casapueblo, La Barra, Manantiales, José Ignacio and the wineries are strung out along the coast road and the roads inland.

### How do you get to Punta del Este from Buenos Aires?

Fly into Punta del Este (PDP), or into Carrasco (MVD) and drive the two hours east. By water, Buquebus crosses to Colonia or Montevideo with a coach on from there, and also runs a longer direct service into Punta del Este.
