# Top 10 Things To Do in Pécs

Pécs, Hungary · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 13 min read

Pécs has been four cities on the same ground. Roman Sopianae buried its Christians in painted chambers under what is now the cathedral square, the Ottomans left two mosques standing, the Zsolnay family fired the glazed tile that roofs half of Hungary, and 22,000 students keep the place awake. The Mecsek rises behind all of it.

## Quick answer

Two days. Day one is the World Heritage centre on foot: the Cella Septichora chambers under Szent István tér, the cathedral above them, the Ottoman mosque on Széchenyi tér and the museum street at Káptalan utca. Day two is the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter and the hill, either the TV tower on Misina or the Tettye ruins. Villány's cellars are 30 km east.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** $45-95
- **Language:** Hungarian
- **Getting around:** Walking and buses
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://pecs.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Pécs

### 1. Cella Septichora and the Early Christian Necropolis

UNESCO site · Szent István tér, Pécs 7621

Seven fourth-century burial chambers, roofed by a glass visitor centre and crossed on walkways above the excavation. The painted walls are why UNESCO listed Pécs in 2000: Roman Sopianae buried its Christians underground here, with memorial chapels standing over them. Start the city here.

- **Time:** 60-75 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The chambers hold their temperature year round, so take a layer in August

### 2. Zsolnay Cultural Quarter

Cultural quarter · Zsolnay Vilmos utca 37, Pécs 7632

The old porcelain works, five hectares and close to thirty listed buildings, reopened in 2012 as a campus of museums, workshops, a planetarium and a puppet theatre. The eosin glaze that roofs half of Hungary was fired on this site. Allow half a day.

- **Time:** 3-4 hours
- **Cost:** Ticketed by venue
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Permanent exhibitions run 10:00 to 18:00 daily, the visitor centre from 09:00

### 3. Mosque of Pasha Qasim

Landmark · Széchenyi tér 20, Pécs 7621

The largest Ottoman building left in Hungary, raised in the sixteenth century at the top of the main square and a Catholic church ever since. The mihrab niche and the Islamic arches survive under the Christian furnishing, which is the whole reason to go in.

- **Time:** 20-30 min
- **Cost:** See official site
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** It is a working church, so services take precedence over visits

### 4. Pécs Cathedral, Saints Peter and Paul

Cathedral · Szent István tér, Pécs 7624

Four corner towers over a Romanesque core that has been rebuilt and re-faced for eight centuries, standing directly above the Roman burial chambers. The crypt is the oldest part of it, and the square in front is where the necropolis entrance sits.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Cathedral and necropolis share one square, so do them back to back

Links: [Website](https://pecs.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Csontváry Museum

Museum · Janus Pannonius utca 11, Pécs 7621

The major canvases of Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry, the symbolist pharmacist who painted Baalbek and the Lonely Cedar and was ignored for most of his life. The rooms are hung to give the largest works the distance they need. An hour covers it.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** One of the Janus Pannonius Museum sites, five minutes from Káptalan utca

Links: [Website](https://www.jpm.hu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Victor Vasarely Museum

Museum · Káptalan utca 3, Pécs 7621

Op art on the museum street, in the city where Vasarely was born in 1906. The optical grids and the colour studies read far better in sequence on a wall than they ever do in reproduction. 2026 is a Vasarely memorial year in Pécs.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Káptalan utca is a hundred metres of museums, so plan the street, not the single visit

Links: [Website](https://pecs.hu/en/vasarely-muzeum/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Jakováli Hasszán Mosque and minaret

Landmark · Rákóczi út 2, Pécs 7621

The only Ottoman mosque in Hungary still standing with its original minaret. Sixteenth century, used as a hospital once the city passed to Austria and later turned into a Catholic chapel, and small enough to read properly in twenty minutes.

- **Time:** 20-30 min
- **Cost:** See official site
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Ten minutes west of Széchenyi tér, off the main tourist line

Links: [Website](https://jakovalihaszandzsami.org/en_intro/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Pécs TV Tower on Misina peak

Viewpoint · Misina-tető, Pécs 7635

197 metres of concrete on the 535-metre Misina peak, in service since 1973, with a public observation deck at 75 metres and a restaurant just below it. On a clear day the view runs south over the Drava plain into Croatia.

- **Time:** 1-2 hours
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Clear afternoons
- **Tip:** The zoo and the hill trails sit on the same road up, so make one trip of it

Links: [Website](https://pecs.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Tettye Ruin Park

Park · Tettye tér, Pécs 7625

The shell of a Renaissance palace on a wooded terrace above the old town, with spring-fed water running through it. This is the quietest half hour in Pécs, and the climb up is as much the point as the ruin at the top.

- **Time:** 30-45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Uphill from Káptalan utca, about fifteen minutes on foot

Links: [Website](https://pecs.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Széchenyi tér

Square · Széchenyi tér, Pécs 7621

The sloping main square, with the Ottoman mosque at the head of it, the Zsolnay fountain below and the Hunyadi statue in between. Everything in the centre is measured from here, and Király utca runs east off the bottom corner.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** The fountain is glazed in Zsolnay eosin, which shifts colour with the light

The hills start where the streets stop, which is the reason Pécs feels bigger than it is.

- **Trains** (MÁV): Pécs is 170 km from Budapest by rail and the fastest run takes about two hours forty, arriving at Budapest-Déli. Buy through the MÁV app rather than the counter. [Website](https://www.mavcsoport.hu/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Pécs travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Pécs?

Two. Day one is the walled centre: the necropolis chambers, the cathedral above them, the mosque on Széchenyi tér and the museums on Káptalan utca. Day two is the Zsolnay quarter and the Mecsek. A third day buys you Villány or Harkány.

### When is the best time to visit Pécs?

May, June and September. The Mecsek walking is at its best in spring and autumn, and those months miss the worst of the summer heat. July brings the Zsolnay Light Festival, late September the city's own Pécsi Napok and the Winesong festival.

### Is Pécs worth visiting from Budapest?

Yes, but stay the night. The fastest train takes about two hours forty each way, which leaves too little of a day for a city with a UNESCO site, two Ottoman mosques, a museum street and a hill behind it.

### What is Pécs famous for?

Four things. The fourth-century Christian burial chambers UNESCO listed in 2000. Two surviving Ottoman mosques, one of them with its minaret. Zsolnay ceramics and the eosin glaze. And Hungary's oldest university, founded here in 1367.

### Do you need a car in Pécs?

No. The centre is compact and walkable, if uphill, and Tüke Busz covers Misina, the zoo and the outer districts. A car helps for Villány and Orfű, though buses reach Harkány, Siklós and Szigetvár without much trouble.
