# Top 10 Things To Do in Pärnu

Pärnu, Estonia · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 13 min read

Pärnu has been Estonia's summer capital since its first bathing house opened in 1838. The beach runs straight off a park of old trees, the spa hotels keep the mud cure going year round, and the old town behind them still holds a Swedish rampart and a Hanseatic tower.

## Quick answer

Pärnu is a beach town first: a long sandy shore backed by Rannapark, with the 1927 Mud Baths and the Rannahotell on the promenade. Walk out along the mole at sunset, then cross into the old town for the Tallinn Gate, the Red Tower and Rüütli street. Book a spa day, and give a third day to Kihnu or Soomaa.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Jun · Jul · Aug
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** €70–130
- **Language:** Estonian, with English widely spoken in hotels and restaurants
- **Getting around:** Walk the centre and the beach, cycle the 70 km of paths, county buses beyond
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://visitparnu.com/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Pärnu

### 1. Spend the day on Pärnu Beach and in Rannapark

Beach · Ranna pst 1, Rannarajoon

The reason the town exists as a resort: a long, shallow sandy beach backed by Rannapark, laid out in 1882 and now protected for its plants. Come for the sand and the promenade, and use the park's shade at midday.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** July and August afternoons
- **Tip:** Rent a bike in town and ride the promenade rather than driving; parking near the beach fills early in summer

### 2. Take the cure at the 1927 Mud Baths

Spa · Ranna pst 1

The neoclassical Mud Baths went up in 1926 and 1927 on the site of the 1838 bathhouse burned in the First World War. It reopened as Hedon Spa in 2014, so the pools and treatment rooms sit inside the building that made Pärnu's name.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Out of season, when the beach is cold
- **Tip:** The Silent Spa is for guests aged 14 and over; book treatments ahead in summer

### 3. Walk the mole out into Pärnu Bay

Landmark · Pärnu muul, river mouth

Two kilometres of stone jetties built in the 1860s to keep the river mouth open, now the town's sunset walk. A lit boardwalk runs about half a kilometre from Rannapark along the river to the start of the mole.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** The stones get slippery and the mole floods at high water, so check the sea level and wear proper shoes

### 4. Pass through the Tallinn Gate

Landmark · Vana-Tallinna 1, Old Town

The only 17th-century town gate with its embankment left standing in the Baltic states, called the King's Gate until 1710. The Swedish rampart and moat that survive beside it lead down to the river.

- **Time:** 30 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** A summer evening, when the terrace café opens
- **Tip:** Follow the moat down to the Venus Bastion by the river

### 5. Climb the Red Tower

Museum · Hommiku 11, Old Town

A 15th-century prison tower, the oldest structure in Pärnu and the only defensive tower left from Hanseatic New Pärnu. It is a Pärnu Museum branch now, with a circular panoramic cinema on the top floor.

- **Time:** 45 minutes
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Before lunch on Rüütli
- **Tip:** Pair it with the pedestrian Rüütli street, a short walk away

### 6. Read 11,000 years of the coast at Pärnu Museum

Museum · Aida 3, by the river

The county museum fills a converted 19th-century riverside storehouse and runs from the first Stone Age settlers to the resort years. A new permanent exhibition was scheduled for February 2026.

- **Time:** 2 hours
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** A grey day
- **Tip:** Closed on Mondays; the Concert Hall is across the street for the evening

Links: [Pärnu Museum](https://parnumuuseum.ee/parnu-museum?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. See the baroque of St Catherine's Church

Church · Vee 8, Old Town

Catherine II paid for this Orthodox church, built from 1764 and consecrated in 1768 to a Greek-cross plan by Pyotr Yegorov. It is the finest baroque building in the old town.

- **Time:** 30 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Summer, when it is open daily
- **Tip:** Outside summer, visits are by advance booking

### 8. Take afternoon tea at Villa Ammende

Landmark · Mere pst 7

A merchant's Art Nouveau villa completed in 1905 and restored as a hotel. The way in is the restaurant: book afternoon tea or Sunday brunch and you get the interiors and the park with it.

- **Time:** 2 hours
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Summer, for the concerts in the park
- **Tip:** Walk back along Mere puiestee to see the other resort villas

Links: [Visit Estonia](https://www.visitestonia.com/en/villa-ammende?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Walk the coastal meadow boardwalk

Nature · Ranna pst 11

A short boardwalk loop with a viewing platform through Pärnu's coastal meadow reserve, 341 hectares of grassland grazed by cattle. It starts where the beach hotels end, and it is the quietest walk in town.

- **Time:** 45 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Start from the end of Ranna puiestee, past the last of the beach hotels

Links: [Visit Estonia](https://visitestonia.com/en/parnu-coastal-meadow-hiking-trail?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Find Lydia Koidula's schoolhouse in Ülejõe

Museum · J. V. Jannseni 37, Ülejõe

The schoolhouse where Estonia's national poet grew up, and where her father J. V. Jannsen ran the school and launched Perno Postimees in 1857. It is a Pärnu Museum branch across the river, small and specific.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Combined with a walk over the river
- **Tip:** Walk over the river bridge from the old town

## Pärnu travel FAQ

### When is the best time to visit Pärnu?

June to August. The beach, the bike hire and the festivals all run in those months, and July is the warmest, with highs around 22°C. Out of season the spas stay open, the town is quiet and hotel rates drop.

### How do you get to Pärnu from Tallinn?

By coach. There has been no passenger train since December 2018, and Lux Express runs Tallinn to Pärnu more than a dozen times a day in about an hour and a half. Some departures stop at Tallinn Airport.

### How many days do you need in Pärnu?

Two. One for the beach, the Mud Baths and the mole, one for the old town: the Tallinn Gate, the Red Tower, Rüütli and Pärnu Museum. Add a third for Kihnu or Soomaa.

### Can you swim in the sea at Pärnu?

Yes, in summer. The beach shelves gently, so children can wade well out. For cold days, the water park at Tervise Paradiis and the spa pools run all year.

### How do you visit Kihnu from Pärnu?

Get to Munalaid harbour, about an hour by road or bus, and take the ferry, which crosses in about an hour. Book ahead in summer, and check the sailing: strong wind or low water can cancel it.
