# Top 10 Things To Do in Ohrid

Ohrid, North Macedonia · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 13 min read

Ohrid is a small town carrying an outsized amount of history, stacked up a bluff between a fortress wall and the water. Inside a twenty-minute walk you pass a Hellenistic theatre, an eleventh-century cathedral and the school where Slavonic literacy was taught. Below it sits one of the oldest lakes on Earth.

## Quick answer

The best things to do in Ohrid are the church of St John at Kaneo on its cliff, the ramparts of Tsar Samuel’s fortress above the old town, the Hellenistic theatre wedged between houses, the Plaošnik excavations where Clement taught in Slavonic, and the monastery of Sveti Naum at the southern end of the lake. Three days covers the town on foot and leaves one for the water.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Jun · Jul · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** €45–90
- **Language:** Macedonian, Albanian
- **Getting around:** On foot, by boat, by local bus
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://ohrid.gov.mk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Ohrid

### 1. Walk the cliff to St John at Kaneo

Church · Kaneo, 6000 Ohrid

The most photographed building in North Macedonia sits on a rock above the water at the western edge of town. The church is a compact cross-in-square with a dome, built before 1447, its brickwork patterned in the Byzantine manner. The frescoes survive only in fragments, so the reason to come is the setting: the bluff and the open lake.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed at the door
- **Best at:** Late afternoon, when the light comes off the water
- **Tip:** Come down from Plaošnik and leave along the boardwalk. Doing it in that order gives you the postcard first and a swim second.

### 2. Climb to Samuel’s Fortress

Landmark · Samuil’s Fortress, Gorna Porta, 6000 Ohrid

Ohrid was the capital of Tsar Samuel's state at the turn of the eleventh century, and the wall around the crown of the hill is what is left of it. The circuit was restored in 2003, so you can walk long stretches of rampart. There is not much inside the walls, which is the point: the interest is entirely in the vantage.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed at the gate
- **Best at:** Early morning, before the coaches arrive
- **Tip:** The wall is uneven and the towers have open drops. Wear something with grip and keep small children close.

### 3. See where Slavonic was taught, at Plaošnik

Historic site · Plaošnik, 6000 Ohrid

Two hundred and fifty metres below the fortress, Clement of Ohrid founded a monastery and a school in the late ninth century and taught in Slavonic rather than Greek. What you see is layered: the church rebuilt in 2002 on Clement's own foundations, with the floors of a fifth-century basilica around it. Excavation continues.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning, while the mosaics are lit
- **Tip:** The terrace outside the church is the shortcut down to Kaneo. Take it rather than doubling back through the gate.

### 4. Sit in the Hellenistic theatre

Historic site · Ilindenska, 6000 Ohrid

Built around the second century BC, buried, forgotten, and found by accident in 1977 when a house was going up on the slope. Only the lower rows survive, hemmed in by the old town, which is what makes it strange to stand in. It is a working venue again each summer, with the Ohrid Summer Festival staging plays here.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free to walk in
- **Best at:** Any time, though it is loveliest lit for an evening performance
- **Tip:** Check what the Ohrid Summer Festival has programmed here between 12 July and 20 August. Seeing it used beats seeing it empty.

### 5. Find the eleventh-century frescoes in St Sophia

Church · Car Samoil 88, 6000 Ohrid

The cathedral of the Ohrid archbishopric, and the most important medieval building in the country. The eleventh-century painting in the sanctuary and narthex is preserved in full, which is rare anywhere in the Byzantine world: the church spent the Ottoman centuries as a mosque, and the plaster that hid it is why it survives.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Photography rules vary by room. Ask at the desk rather than assuming, and expect the sanctuary to be the strictest.

### 6. Take the lake down to Sveti Naum

Monastery · Ljubaništa, 6000 Ohrid

Naum, Clement's contemporary, founded this monastery around 905 at the far southern end of the lake, a few hundred metres from the Albanian border. The present church is a sixteenth-century rebuild with Naum's tomb inside. Behind it the springs of the Crn Drim rise out of the ground in dozens of vents, cold and clear.

- **Time:** Half a day with the journey
- **Cost:** Ticketed at the monastery
- **Best at:** Out by boat in the morning, back by bus in the afternoon
- **Tip:** The passenger boats from Ohrid harbour are seasonal and stop in early autumn. Galeb’s buses down the lake road run all year.

### 7. Follow the boardwalk under the cliffs

Walk · Kosta Abraš to Kaneo, 6000 Ohrid

A wooden walkway runs along the foot of the cliffs from the old harbour round to Kaneo, threading between rock and water the whole way. It is the best twenty minutes in Ohrid and costs nothing. Parts have no railing and the planks are slick after rain, so it wants attention rather than flip-flops.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning, or the last hour of light
- **Tip:** Bring a towel. Potpesh sits halfway along and is the easiest swim in town.

### 8. Cross to the Bay of Bones

Museum · Gradište, Peštani, 6000 Ohrid

About eighteen kilometres down the eastern shore, a whole village has been rebuilt on a platform over the water: reed-roofed huts on wooden piles, reconstructing a settlement of roughly 1200 to 700 BC. It is not a guess. Divers found the original piles, and the museum shows what came up. A Roman fort sits on the hill behind.

- **Time:** 1 hr 30
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Midday, then swim at Gradište beach below
- **Tip:** Pair it with the beach. The pebble shore directly under the museum is one of the better swims on the lake.

### 9. Stand in front of the icons at the Icon Gallery

Museum · Gorna Porta, 6000 Ohrid

A small room next to Sveta Bogorodica Perivlepta holds 37 icons, six of them painted on both sides, running from the eleventh century to the nineteenth. Curators rank the Ohrid collection alongside Sinai and Athos, which is a large claim for a gallery you can cross in fifteen paces. Go slowly.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** The gallery and the church next door are one visit. Do the icons first, while your eyes are fresh, then the frescoes of 1295 inside Perivlepta.

### 10. Drive the Galičica ridge for both lakes at once

Nature · Galičica National Park, 6000 Ohrid

The mountain between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa is a national park, and the road over it climbs in hairpins to a saddle where both lakes are in view at once. They do not look alike: Ohrid is deep teal, Prespa shallower, greener and higher, and the two are connected underground through the limestone.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Free to drive the road
- **Best at:** Clear mornings, before the haze builds
- **Tip:** The saddle is exposed and the weather changes fast up there. Take a layer even in August.

## Best churches & monasteries in Ohrid

The town was called the Jerusalem of the Balkans for a reason. These six are the ones to plan around.

1. **Sveta Bogorodica Perivlepta** (Frescoes of 1295 · Gorna Porta): Built in 1295 for the Byzantine general Progon Zguros and painted by Mihail and Eutihije, whose work here is the benchmark for the period. Locals call it Sveti Kliment.
2. **Sveti Nikola Bolnički** (Painted in 1313 · Kosta Abraš): A tiny church on the lower town lane, built and frescoed in 1313. Bolnica means hospital: plague suspects were quarantined here before entering.
3. **Sveta Bogorodica Bolnička** (14th century · Kosta Abraš): The women's half of the quarantine pair, a few doors along. Its western belfry is unlike anything else in the country and reads as Adriatic.
4. **Sveta Bogorodica Zahumska (Zaum)** (Painted in 1361 · Trpejca): A domed cross-plan church alone on the eastern shore, built and painted in 1361. Boats from Ohrid or Trpejca are the usual way in; the footpath is steep.
5. **Monastery of Sveti Naum** (Founded around 905 · Ljubaništa): Worth a second mention for the setting alone. The feast on 3 July fills the courtyard with pilgrims, and the springs behind the walls source the Crn Drim.
6. **Church of St John at Kaneo** (Before 1447 · Kaneo): The one on the cliff. Small, plain inside, and impossible to walk past without stopping. Reachable on foot from the boardwalk or by boat.

## Best restaurants in Ohrid

Lake fish, clay-pan beans and a grill tradition shared with the whole Balkan peninsula.

1. **Kaneo Restaurant & Letna Bavča** (Lake trout, cooked over coals · Kaneo): Tables on a deck at the water's edge below the Kaneo church, and the best-known kitchen on the lake. Trout and homemade pasta. Prices sit at the top. [Website](http://kaneorestaurant.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Restaurant Antiko** (Macedonian classics in a merchant house · Čaršija): Ohrid's oldest restaurant, open since 1988 inside a two-hundred-year-old mansion that is a listed monument. Live Macedonian music most evenings.
3. **Restoran Sveta Sofija** (Trout and monastery cheese · Car Samoil): Named for the church across the lane and running for three decades. The kitchen leans on Ohrid trout and monastery cheese, and the terrace faces the wall. [Website](https://restoransvsofija.mk/en_US/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Belvedere** (Broad menu, live music · Centre): The reliable central option when the old town is full: a long menu of Macedonian standards with enough vegetarian cooking to matter, and musicians in the evening.
5. **Damar** (Modern Macedonian · Car Samoil): Directly opposite Sveta Sofija in the old centre, and the choice when you want the local repertoire handled with a lighter touch. Small, so it fills early.
6. **Restaurant Ostrovo** (By the springs at Sveti Naum · Ljubaništa): Beside the spring channels behind the Sveti Naum monastery. Fresh cheese, spinach pie and shopska salad under the trees, with the water running past the table.

## Best beaches in Ohrid

The lake is fed by springs rather than rivers, so it stays clear. Six places to get into it.

1. **Kaneo Beach** (Rocky, deep, swimming platform · Kaneo): Directly under the cliff church. Small, stony and deep almost immediately, which makes it the best place in town to swim rather than wade.
2. **Potpesh Beach** (The boardwalk swim · Kaneo): Halfway along the cliff walkway from the harbour, ten minutes on foot from the old town and feeling a long way from it. Clear water over pale rock.
3. **Labino Beach** (Quiet, through the pines · Kaneo): Round the headland past Kaneo, up through a stand of pine and down again. Rocky, calm and usually near empty, with a viewpoint on the rise just above it.
4. **Gradište Beach** (Pebble, under Galičica · Peštani): Eighteen kilometres down the eastern shore and the beach most Macedonians name first: a long pebble curve backed by the national park.
5. **Ljubaništa** (Long shore, pine shade · Ljubaništa): The southern end of the lake, next to Sveti Naum. A wide shingle beach with real pine shade behind it, which is worth the drive in August when the town beaches are full.
6. **Peštani** (Village beach and boats · Peštani): Fourteen kilometres south, where the lake road runs through a working village. Cafés, boat hire and a shore that never feels resort-built. Buses stop here.

## Best museums & ruins in Ohrid

Ohrid has been continuously inhabited for a very long time, and it shows in layers.

1. **Robevi House, National Museum** (Archaeology and icons · Car Samoil): An 1860s merchant house worth entering for the woodwork alone: three storeys of carved ceilings, holding the regional archaeological collection. [Website](https://muzejohrid.mk/en/house-of-robev-family?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Icon Gallery** (37 icons, 11th to 19th century · Gorna Porta): One room, a world-class collection, six of the pieces painted on both sides for carrying in procession. Fifteen minutes if you rush it, an hour if you do not. [Website](https://muzejohrid.mk/icon-gallery-2/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Plaošnik excavations** (Fifth-century basilica mosaics · Plaošnik): The mosaic floors under cover beside the rebuilt church are the part people walk past. Peacocks, vines and geometric bands, laid in the fifth century.
4. **National Workshop for Handmade Paper** (Working Gutenberg press replica · Car Samoil): A shopfront on Car Samoil where paper is still made by the second-century Chinese method, with a working replica of Gutenberg's press printing on it.
5. **Sveti Erazmo** (Cave church over a 6th-century basilica · Ohrid–Struga road): Two kilometres out on the Struga road, a small church built into a cliff hollow above the floor of an early Christian basilica. The frescoes are late thirteenth century.

## Best bars & cafes in Ohrid

Kosta Abraš is the bar street. It runs along the water at the base of the old town.

1. **Kadmo Lounge Bar** (Local wine, lake terrace · Kosta Abraš): The pick of the lakefront strip: a wine list that stays Macedonian, a terrace over the water and a beach club in summer. Coffee early, cocktails late.
2. **Liquid Café Bar** (Day café, night bar · Kosta Abraš): At the foot of the old town on the shore, quiet enough to read in during the afternoon and one of the busier places on the strip once the music starts.
3. **The Jazz Inn** (Live jazz and blues · Kosta Abraš): A small, dark room on the same lane that has been Ohrid’s live music address for years. Late, loud enough, and the antidote to a strip of identical terraces.
4. **Cuba Libre Beach & Bar** (Beach club and year-round club · Naum Ohridski): A club in town through the year and a lakeside beach club just south of the centre in season. The loudest option in Ohrid, deliberately.

## Best shopping in Ohrid

One craft here exists nowhere else, and two families control it.

1. **Ohrid Pearls Talevi** (Making pearls since 1924 · Old town): One of the two families who hold the real pearl method. The paste comes from the scales of the plašica fish, and the recipe has never been written down. [Website](https://talevi.mk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Ohrid Pearls Filevi** (Making pearls since 1928 · Old town): The other pearl family, working since 1928. Between Filevi and Talevi you have the whole genuine trade, which matters because the souvenir shops sell imitations. [Website](https://filevi.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **National Workshop for Handmade Paper** (Prints from the Gutenberg replica · Car Samoil): Sheets made on the premises and pressed prints of old documents and Ohrid scenes. A better souvenir than a magnet, and it travels flat.
4. **The old bazaar (Čaršija)** (Woodcarving, filigree, food · Čaršija): The lanes running inland from the harbour, still the town's working market end. Woodcarving and silver filigree among the tourist stock, plus produce stalls.

## Best day trips in Ohrid

Nothing worth seeing here is more than two hours away.

1. **Struga** (14 km, where the lake drains · Struga): The lake's outflow town, where the Crn Drim leaves for Albania. Quieter and flatter than Ohrid, with a long beach and the Poetry Evenings each August.
2. **Vevčani** (Springs and a January carnival · Vevčani): A stone village above Struga, built around springs that come straight out of the hillside. Its January carnival is one of the oldest in the Balkans.
3. **Lake Prespa and Stenje** (38 km over the ridge · Prespa): Over the Galičica road and down the other side to a lake a century behind Ohrid: reed beds, apple orchards and almost no one. Allow over an hour each way.
4. **Bitola and Heraclea Lyncestis** (90 km, Roman mosaics · Pelagonia): The country's second city, with a consular boulevard from its Ottoman years and, on the edge of town, the mosaic floors of Heraclea Lyncestis.
5. **Pogradec, Albania** (The far shore · Albania): The Albanian half of the lake, round the southern end past Sveti Naum. A promenade town, and the easiest way to see Ohrid from the outside.

## Festivals & annual events in Ohrid (2026)

- **Vevčani Carnival** (Jan): Mid-January in the village above Struga, and one of the oldest carnivals in the Balkans. Masked satire and bonfires.
- **Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances** (Jul): Founded in Ohrid in 1962 and the oldest of its kind in the Balkans. Ensembles from across the peninsula, in costume.
- **Feast of Sveti Naum** (Jul): 3 July at the monastery on the southern shore. Pilgrims arrive in embroidered dress and the courtyard fills from early.
- **Ohrid Summer Festival** (Jul): The main event, from 12 July to 20 August since 1961. Concerts and theatre in the Ancient Theatre and St Sophia.
- **International Choir Festival "St Clement of Ohrid"** (Aug): 4 to 8 August, with choirs performing in the churches whose acoustics the repertoire was written for. Free entry to most sessions.
- **Ohrid Swimming Marathon** (Aug): Thirty kilometres of open water from Sveti Naum to the city harbour, with a professional international field.
- **Struga Poetry Evenings** (Aug): The third week of August, 14 kilometres away. Poets read from the bridge over the Crn Drim on the closing night.
- **St Clement of Ohrid Day** (Dec): 8 December, a national public holiday and Ohrid's own day. Processions to Plaošnik, where Clement is buried.

## Must-try dishes in Ohrid, North Macedonia

- **Ohrid trout**: Salmo letnica lives in this lake and nowhere else. Most of what reaches a plate is reared. Grilled whole.
- **Tavče gravče**: The national dish: beans baked in a shallow clay pan with paprika, onion and mint until the top crusts.
- **Ajvar**: Roasted red peppers and aubergine cooked down with garlic into a thick relish.
- **Pastrmajlija**: A long oval flatbread with cubed salted pork pressed into the dough and an egg cracked over it.
- **Shopska salad**: Tomato, cucumber, pepper and onion under a heavy fall of grated sirenje. Ask for it fresh.
- **Kebapi**: Short fingers of minced beef and lamb off the grill, with raw onion, ajvar and soft flatbread.
- **Zelnik**: A pie of thin pastry rolled around leek, spinach or cheese and baked flat. Bakery food, best in the morning.
- **Burek**: Layered pastry filled with cheese, meat or spinach, sold by weight and eaten with drinking yoghurt.

## Ohrid transport & airports

- **Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport** (OHD): Nine kilometres northwest of the centre, fifteen to twenty minutes in by road. There is no scheduled bus, so a metered taxi or a booked transfer is how independent travellers arrive. [Website](https://ohd.airports.com.mk/en-EN/passenger-guide/to-from-the-airport/page/taxi?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **Intercity buses** (Bus): The bus station on the northeastern edge is the real network, because no passenger train reaches Ohrid. Skopje runs in about three hours, with frequent local services down the lake road.
- **Passenger boats** (Boat): Boats leave the city harbour for Sveti Naum in around three hours, calling at the Bay of Bones. A summer service only; after September the bus is the way south.
- **On foot and by taxi** (Walk): The old town is cobbled, steep and largely closed to cars, so everything inside the walls is walked. Taxis are metered and the sensible way to reach the beaches late.

## Ohrid travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Ohrid?

Three. The first covers the old town on foot: Sveta Sofija, the theatre, Plaošnik, the fortress wall and the cliff path to Kaneo. The second goes down the eastern shore to the Bay of Bones and Sveti Naum. The third is the Galičica ridge or a day on a beach. Two days works if you skip the lake road.

### When is the best time to visit Ohrid?

June and September. Both give warm days, a swimmable lake and an old town you can walk without queueing. July and August have the warmest water and the whole festival calendar, but the town is at capacity. Between November and March a good deal closes, and the boats to Sveti Naum do not run.

### How do you get to Ohrid?

Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport is nine kilometres from town, but it is seasonal, with far more flights in summer. The alternative is flying to Skopje and taking a bus, which runs in about three hours. There is no passenger train to Ohrid, so every land route is a road route.

### Can you swim in Lake Ohrid?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons to come. The lake is spring-fed rather than river-fed, so the water is clear enough to see the bottom well out from shore. It warms to roughly 23°C in August. Kaneo and Potpesh are the swims within walking distance; Gradište is worth the bus.

### What is Ohrid known for?

Three things. The lake, one of the oldest on Earth and holding more than 200 species found nowhere else. The churches, enough that the town is called the Jerusalem of the Balkans. And Plaošnik, where Clement taught Slavonic literacy from the late ninth century. UNESCO lists the natural and cultural heritage together.
