# Top 10 Things To Do in Maastricht

Maastricht, Netherlands · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Maastricht sits at the bottom of the Netherlands, closer to Liege and Aachen than to Amsterdam, and it behaves accordingly: Romanesque churches, a Burgundian appetite and a dialect of its own. The ten entries below run from the caves under Sint-Pietersberg through the walled centre and across the Meuse into Wyck.

## Quick answer

The best things to do in Maastricht are the guided cave tours under Sint-Pietersberg, the bookshop inside the Dominican church, the basilica of Saint Servatius with its treasury, and the 1298 stone bridge into Wyck. Two days covers the walled centre and the hill behind it. Come in May, June or September, book the caves before you travel, and keep a Sunday for the antiques market over the border in Tongeren.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** €110–180
- **Language:** Dutch, with Limburgish spoken locally
- **Getting around:** The walled centre on foot, buses and bikes past it
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.visitmaastricht.com/en)

## The 10 best things to do in Maastricht

### 1. Go underground at the Sint Pietersberg caves

Caves · Grotten Noord, Luikerweg 80, 6212 NH Maastricht

Centuries of marl quarrying left a labyrinth under Mount Saint Peter, its walls carved with charcoal drawings and signs from the years it sheltered the city. You go in with a guide or not at all, and it holds around 10°C all year, so take a jacket in August.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Any weather
- **Tip:** Book the slot before you travel

### 2. Browse Boekhandel Dominicanen

Bookshop · Dominicanerkerkstraat 1, 6211 CZ Maastricht

A Dominican church of the 13th century that has sold books since 2006, the ceiling frescoes intact above a black steel bookstack you climb for the view back down the nave. Coffee is served in the old priest’s choir. Walking in costs nothing.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Climb the stack to the top deck

Links: [Website](https://www.boekhandeldominicanen.nl/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. See the treasury at the Sint-Servaasbasiliek

Basilica · Keizer Karelplein 3, 6211 TC Maastricht

The Romanesque basilica stands over the grave of the city’s patron saint, and the treasury beside it holds the reliquary shrine and the silver bust still carried through the streets on pilgrimage. The cloister and the crypt are the quiet half of the visit.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The treasury is the reason to buy the ticket

Links: [Website](https://www.sintservaas.nl/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 4. Take a table on the Vrijthof

Square · Vrijthof, 6211 LD Maastricht

The city’s big square, two churches shoulder to shoulder along one side and a wall of terraces down the other. It doubles as the stage: Andre Rieu in July, an open-air restaurant in August, the Christmas market from late November.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The east side keeps the sun longest

Links: [Website](https://www.visitmaastricht.com/en)

### 5. Work through the Bonnefanten

Museum · Avenue Céramique 250, 6221 KX Maastricht

Limburg’s art museum, in Aldo Rossi’s building on the Meuse under a zinc cupola you can pick out from the bridge. Medieval sculpture and old masters on one floor, contemporary work above. The riverside walk to reach it is half the visit.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Walk the Céramique quay both ways

Links: [Website](https://www.bonnefanten.nl/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Find the Sterre der Zee chapel

Basilica · Onze Lieve Vrouweplein 7, 6211 HE Maastricht

A Romanesque church whose westwork was built like a fortress wall, and inside it the chapel of Our Lady, Star of the Sea: a 15th-century wooden Virgin banked with candles that pilgrims still travel for. Enter from the square rather than the cloister.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free entry
- **Best at:** Early
- **Tip:** The chapel is left of the entrance

Links: [Website](https://www.visitmaastricht.com/en)

### 7. Climb the red tower of the Sint-Janskerk

Viewpoint · Vrijthof 24, 6211 LE Maastricht

The red tower beside Sint-Servaas is the one you see from everywhere, and 260 spiral steps get you to the platform on top. The stair is narrow and tight in places. What you get for it is the whole centre, the Meuse and the hills behind it.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Small fee
- **Best at:** Clear day
- **Tip:** Not for anyone uneasy in tight stairs

Links: [Website](https://www.stjanskerkmaastricht.nl/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Walk the first city wall at the Helpoort

Fortification · Sint Bernardusstraat 24b, 6211 HL Maastricht

Begun in 1229, this is the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands, and the run of first wall leading off it is walkable. Inside sits Vestingmuseum Maastricht, which explains why a Dutch city ended up with this much stone around it.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Small fee
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** Follow the wall on to the Jekerkwartier

Links: [Website](https://www.vestingmuseummaastricht.nl/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Cross the Sint Servaasbrug

Bridge · Sint Servaasbrug, Maastricht

Built between 1280 and 1298 and the oldest bridge in the country, 160 metres of limestone tying the old centre to Wyck. Cross it on foot at dusk, when the lit facades on both banks land in the water and the drawbridge section is up for a barge.

- **Time:** 15 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Dusk
- **Tip:** Come back over the Hoge Brug for the other angle

Links: [Website](https://www.visitmaastricht.com/en)

### 10. Drop into the ENCI quarry on Sint-Pietersberg

Nature · Sint-Pietersberg, Luikerweg, 6212 Maastricht

Cement quarrying stopped here in 2018 and left 150 hectares of terraces, cliffs and pools, now part of a protected Natura 2000 site. A staircase of 215 steps drops into the pit. Above it there is chalk grassland and the long view down the Meuse valley.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Dry day
- **Tip:** The 215 steps are the only way in or out

## Maastricht travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Maastricht?

Two. The first covers the walled centre: both basilicas, the Vrijthof, the bookshop church and a walk over Sint Servaasbrug into Wyck. The second takes the caves and the fort on Sint-Pietersberg, with the Bonnefanten on the way back. A third buys you Valkenburg or Aachen.

### When is the best time to visit Maastricht?

May, June and September, when the terraces are open and the crowds are thinner than in high summer. February is worth it for carnival if you want the city at full volume, and late November onwards for the Christmas market on the Vrijthof.

### Is Maastricht walkable?

Yes. The old centre crosses in about fifteen minutes on foot, and both river bridges into Wyck carry walkers. Only Sint-Pietersberg needs more than legs, and even that is a half-hour walk or a short bus ride from the Helpoort.

### Do you need to book the Sint Pietersberg caves in advance?

Book ahead. The caves are open to guided tours only, tours run to a timetable and in the north caves and Zonneberg alike the group size is capped. Take a jacket whatever the month: the temperature underground sits around 10°C all year.

### Can you day trip to Belgium and Germany from Maastricht?

Easily, and it is half the reason to stay here. Liege is about thirty minutes by train, Aachen about an hour, and Tongeren is a short hop for its Sunday antiques market. Bus 350 reaches Vaals, where the Dutch, Belgian and German borders meet.
