# Top 10 Things To Do in Lucerne

Lucerne, Switzerland · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Lucerne sits where the Reuss leaves the lake, under two mountains that each run a railway to their summit. The old town is medieval and walkable end to end in twenty minutes, the museums are better than a city of 86,000 has any business holding, and the boat pier is outside the station door.

## Quick answer

Walk the Chapel Bridge and the Musegg Wall first: both are free and both are twenty minutes’ work. Give a half day to the Swiss Museum of Transport or the Rosengart Collection, then take a boat out onto the lake in the afternoon. Keep one whole day for a mountain, Pilatus for the engineering or Rigi for the view back over the water.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** CHF 170–300
- **Language:** German, spoken locally as Lucerne Swiss German
- **Getting around:** The old town on foot, boats and trains for everything past it
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.luzern.com/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Lucerne

### 1. Chapel Bridge and the Water Tower

Landmark · Kapellbrücke, 6002 Luzern

The oldest surviving covered wooden bridge in Europe, thrown across the Reuss in the 1330s with the octagonal Water Tower welded to its side. Fire took two thirds of it in August 1993 and the rebuild was done in eight months. Cross from the Rathausquai end to read the gable paintings in order.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** The surviving 17th-century panels start at the Rathausquai end

### 2. Mount Pilatus and the Golden Round Trip

Mountain · Pilatus Kulm, 6010 Kriens

The steepest cogwheel railway in the world, 48 percent at its worst, running from Alpnachstad to a 2,132 metre summit since 1889. The Golden Round Trip pairs it with a lake boat out and gondolas down to Kriens. The rack railway runs May to November, snow permitting; the Kriens cableway runs all year.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Clear mornings
- **Tip:** Fix the boat departure first, the rest of the day hangs off it

Links: [Pilatus](https://pilatus.ch/en/railway-cableways?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Swiss Museum of Transport

Museum · Lidostrasse 5, 6006 Luzern

The most visited museum in Switzerland, and not only by children: 20,000 square metres of locomotives, aircraft, cars and a real submarine, with a planetarium and a chocolate exhibition attached. Ten minutes from the station by trolleybus, or by boat to the museum’s own landing.

- **Time:** 3-4 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Rain
- **Tip:** Arrive by boat; it docks at the museum quay rather than in town

Links: [Swiss Museum of Transport](https://www.verkehrshaus.ch/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 4. Lion Monument

Monument · Denkmalstrasse 4, 6006 Luzern

A dying lion nine metres long, cut into the rock face in 1820 and 1821 to a design by Bertel Thorvaldsen, for the Swiss Guards killed at the Tuileries in 1792. Mark Twain called it the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world. It takes ten minutes and earns them.

- **Time:** 15 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Before 9am
- **Tip:** Coach groups fill the pond terrace from mid-morning onward

### 5. The Musegg Wall and its towers

Landmark · Museggstrasse, 6004 Luzern

Eight hundred metres of intact rampart above the old town, with nine towers, four of them open and free to climb. The Zyt tower holds the city clock of 1535, which strikes the hour a minute before every other clock in Lucerne. Wall and towers close from November to March.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Start at the Männli tower and walk east with the light behind you

### 6. Rigi Kulm by cogwheel railway

Mountain · Rigi Kulm, 6410 Goldau

Europe’s first mountain railway opened from Vitznau to this summit on 21 May 1871 and still climbs it. Take the boat to Vitznau, the rack train up, then descend the far side to Goldau or by cable car to Weggis. The reward is the whole lake, seen from above and end to end.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Sunrise or sunset
- **Tip:** Do the boat leg outbound; the morning light is on the water

Links: [Rigi Bahnen](https://www.rigi.ch/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Rosengart Collection

Museum · Pilatusstrasse 10, 6003 Luzern

Siegfried and Angela Rosengart’s private holdings, opened to the public in 2002 in the old Swiss National Bank building. Thirty-two Picasso paintings and 125 works by Paul Klee, hung without crowds, five minutes from the station.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday mornings
- **Tip:** The Klee rooms below ground are the reason to come

Links: [Rosengart Collection](https://www.rosengart.ch/en/welcome?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. A paddle steamer on Lake Lucerne

Boat trip · Bahnhofquai, 6003 Luzern

Five steamers built between 1901 and 1928 still work this lake, the largest such fleet on any inland water. Lucerne to Flüelen takes about three hours each way, past the Bürgenstock, Vitznau and the Rütli meadow. These are scheduled services, not a cruise.

- **Time:** 2-6 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Check the timetable for steam; most departures are motor vessels

Links: [Lake Lucerne Navigation](https://www.lakelucerne.ch/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. KKL Luzern

Concert hall · Europaplatz 1, 6005 Luzern

Jean Nouvel’s culture and congress centre on the water, its roof cantilevered far out over the quay. The concert hall inside is among the best rooms in Europe for orchestral sound and is the home of the Lucerne Festival. Walking under the roof costs nothing.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free outside
- **Best at:** Dusk
- **Tip:** Summer festival seats are sold months ahead of the August opening

Links: [KKL Luzern](https://www.kkl-luzern.ch/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Glacier Garden

Museum · Denkmalstrasse 4, 6006 Luzern

Found by accident in 1872 during cellar digging: 32 potholes ground into the sandstone by meltwater at the end of the last ice age, the largest of them nine metres across. A mirror labyrinth and a viewing tower were added later. It shares a street with the Lion Monument.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Any time
- **Tip:** Pair it with the Lion Monument; they are thirty seconds apart

- Europe’s first mountain railway ran from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm on 21 May 1871.

## Lucerne travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Lucerne?

Two. The first covers the Chapel Bridge, the Musegg Wall and one museum; the second buys a mountain. A third is for the lake: Flüelen and back by paddle steamer, or the Rütli meadow and the Swiss Path from Brunnen.

### Pilatus or Rigi?

Pilatus for the engineering, which is the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, a rock summit and gondolas down to Kriens. Rigi for the view, which is the whole lake below you, and for the boat ride to Vitznau that opens it. Rigi is the easier day with children.

### Is Lucerne expensive?

Yes, by any measure outside Switzerland. Budget CHF 170 to 300 a day per person once a mountain ticket is in it. Those tickets are the line that hurts, so a Swiss Travel Pass or the regional Tell-Pass changes the arithmetic if you are climbing more than one.

### When is the best time to visit Lucerne?

May, June and September. The mountain railways are all running, the boats are on the full timetable, and the summits are clear of both July haze and the worst of the coach traffic. February is worth it for Fasnacht alone. The Musegg Wall closes from November to March.

### Do you need a car in Lucerne?

No. The old town is compact and largely closed to traffic, the station sits on the lake with boats leaving from the quay outside it, and every mountain in this guide is reachable by train, boat or cable car. A car here is a parking problem.
