# Top 10 Things To Do in London

London, United Kingdom · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 17 min read

London is not one city and never pretends to be. The square mile of the City empties at the weekend, Soho fills, and the villages the map calls boroughs each run their own high street and their own accent. The useful strategy is to stop trying to see it all: pick two areas a day and walk between them.

## Quick answer

Give London four days and walk the centre in slices. Devote one to the City and the Tower, one to Westminster and the South Bank, one to the museum quarter in South Kensington, and one to a market and a neighbourhood you have never heard of. The national museums charge nothing for their permanent collections, so the budget goes on food, theatre and the two or three ticketed sights that genuinely earn it.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 4–5 days
- **Budget per day:** $150–260
- **Language:** English
- **Getting around:** Tube & walking
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.visitlondon.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in London

### 1. Tower of London

Landmark · St Katharine's & Wapping, London EC3N 4AB

Nearly a thousand years of fortress, prison, mint and palace on one riverside site, and the most complete surviving eleventh-century fortress palace in Europe. Arrive at opening and go straight to the Crown Jewels before the queue forms, then double back for the White Tower and the wall walk. The Yeoman Warder tours are included and are the best hour of the visit.

- **Time:** 3 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Opening
- **Tip:** Jewels first

### 2. The British Museum

Museum · Great Russell St, Bloomsbury, London WC1B 3DG

Eight million objects and a glass-roofed Great Court that works as a landmark in its own right. Entry to the permanent collection costs nothing, which changes how you use it: come twice for an hour each rather than once for four. The Egyptian and Assyrian galleries draw the crowds, so start upstairs and work down.

- **Time:** 2–3 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Go twice, briefly

### 3. Westminster Abbey

Landmark · 20 Deans Yd, London SW1P 3PA

The coronation church since 1066 and the burial place of monarchs, poets and scientists, packed into a space that rewards looking up. It forms a UNESCO World Heritage site with the Palace of Westminster next door. Come on a weekday morning, and check the day's services first: the abbey closes to sightseers around them.

- **Time:** 1.5–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Check service times

### 4. Borough Market

Food market · 8 Southwark St, London SE1 1TL

A wholesale market since the middle ages and now the most serious food hall in the city, sitting under the railway arches beside Southwark Cathedral. Weekdays are for buying (cheese, bread, produce). Saturday is for eating standing up and accepting the crush. Go hungry and skip breakfast.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free entry
- **Best at:** Weekday lunch
- **Tip:** Skip Saturday crowds

### 5. Tate Modern

Museum · Bankside, London SE1 9TG

A decommissioned power station turned into the best-sited modern art museum in Europe. The Turbine Hall installation is the reason to check what is on before you go, and the Blavatnik Building viewing level puts the river and St Paul's in one frame. The permanent collection is free.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late in the day
- **Tip:** Cross Millennium Bridge

### 6. St Paul's Cathedral

Landmark · St Paul's Churchyard, London EC4M 8AD

Wren's dome survived the Blitz and still sets the shape of the City skyline. The climb matters more than the floor: the Whispering Gallery, then the Stone Gallery, then the Golden Gallery at the top for the best view of the river bend. It is a working cathedral, so sightseeing hours are shorter than you expect.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Climb to the top

### 7. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Gardens · Richmond, London TW9 3AE

Created in 1759, inscribed by UNESCO in 2003, and home to more than 50,000 living plants, the largest and most diverse botanical collection anywhere. It is a half day rather than an afternoon: the Palm House, the Temperate House and the treetop walkway are spread across 300 acres. Best in late spring, when the whole place is doing something.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late spring
- **Tip:** District line to Kew

Links: [Website](https://www.kew.org/kew-gardens?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Shakespeare's Globe

Theatre · 21 New Globe Walk, London SE1 9DT

A faithful reconstruction of the open-air playhouse, a few hundred metres from where the original stood. Standing in the yard as a groundling is the cheapest ticket in London theatre and by far the best way to see it: no roof, no seat, and the actors working the crowd. The outdoor season runs through the warmer months.

- **Time:** 3 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Summer evening
- **Tip:** Stand as a groundling

Links: [Website](https://www.shakespearesglobe.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Hampstead Heath

Park · Hampstead, London NW3 1TH

Eight hundred acres of unmanicured heath in north London, which is exactly what separates it from the royal parks. Parliament Hill holds the protected view south over the whole skyline, and the swimming ponds run year round for people who mean it. Walk up from Hampstead village and come down through Kenwood.

- **Time:** 2–3 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Parliament Hill view

Links: [Website](https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/hampstead-heath?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Royal Observatory, Greenwich

Museum · Blackheath Ave, London SE10 8XJ

Longitude zero, fixed here as the world standard in 1884, on a hill above the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage site. Come by river rather than rail: the boat down from Westminster is half the point, and the observatory, the Cutty Sark and the National Maritime Museum sit within ten minutes of each other at the far end.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Clear afternoon
- **Tip:** Arrive by river

## Best museums in London

Six that reward a return visit, and every one of them free to walk into.

1. **Victoria and Albert Museum** (Art & design · Free · South Kensington): The national collection of art and design, and the one museum here you cannot finish. The cast courts alone justify the trip. [Website](https://www.vam.ac.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Natural History Museum** (Natural history · Free · South Kensington): Waterhouse's terracotta cathedral to the natural world. Come at opening with children, or late in the day without them. [Website](https://www.nhm.ac.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Science Museum** (Science · Free · South Kensington): Engineering and space hardware on the ground floor, hands-on galleries above. The Apollo-era material is the draw. [Website](https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **The National Gallery** (Painting · Free · Trafalgar Square): Western European painting from the thirteenth century on, hung so you can walk it chronologically in ninety minutes. [Website](https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Imperial War Museum London** (History · Free · Lambeth): A serious, unsentimental account of conflict since 1914, including the Holocaust Galleries. Allow more time than you plan to. [Website](https://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-london?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Sir John Soane's Museum** (House museum · Free · Lincoln's Inn Fields): The architect's three townhouses left as they were at his death in 1837, crammed with antiquities. Free, small, and open only some days of the week. [Website](https://www.soane.org/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best restaurants in London

Six kitchens that between them explain what London cooking actually is.

1. **St. JOHN** (British · £££ · Smithfield): Fergus Henderson's nose-to-tail room near Smithfield, and the restaurant most British cooking of the last thirty years traces back to. [Website](https://stjohnrestaurant.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Barrafina** (Spanish · ££–£££ · Soho): Counter-only Spanish cooking, walk-in only at the original Dean Street site. Queue, sit at the bar, watch the plancha. [Website](https://barrafina.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Dishoom** (Indian · ££ · Shoreditch): A Bombay-café pastiche done with enough care that Londoners queue for it. Breakfast is the underrated meal. [Website](https://www.dishoom.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Brat** (Live fire · £££ · Shoreditch): Basque-influenced live-fire cooking upstairs from Smoking Goat in Shoreditch, built around a whole grilled turbot. [Website](https://bratrestaurant.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Tayyabs** (Punjabi · £ · Whitechapel): Punjabi grill in Whitechapel: loud, packed and barely changed in decades. Bring your own wine, order the lamb chops. [Website](https://tayyabs.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **The Ledbury** (Tasting menu · ££££ · Notting Hill): The most refined tasting menu in west London, and the room people book months out for. Occasion dining, priced accordingly. [Website](https://theledbury.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best pubs in London

Six pubs worth crossing town for, chosen for the room rather than the beer list.

1. **Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese** (Historic · Fleet St · City of London): Rebuilt in 1667 after the Great Fire, down an alley off Fleet Street, with sawdust on the floor and a warren of back rooms. [Website](https://ye-olde-cheshire-cheese.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **The Prospect of Whitby** (Riverside · Wapping): A riverside tavern in Wapping with a flagstone floor and a terrace over the Thames at the point where the tide turns.
3. **The Lamb** (Victorian · Bloomsbury): A Bloomsbury Victorian with its etched snob screens still in place, which is rarer than it sounds.
4. **The Blackfriar** (Arts & Crafts · Blackfriars): An Arts and Crafts interior of marble, mosaic and bronze monks, squeezed onto a triangular corner by Blackfriars station.
5. **The Southampton Arms** (Ale house · Kentish Town): Ale and cider only, no food beyond a pork pie, and usually somebody at the piano by the evening.
6. **The Harp** (Cask ale · Covent Garden): A narrow Covent Garden bar with stained glass, a rotating cask list and standing room out on the pavement.

## Best markets in London

Five markets that each run to their own day of the week. Turn up on the wrong one and you get an empty street.

1. **Columbia Road Flower Market** (Flowers · Sundays · Bethnal Green): A single east London street that becomes a wall of plants on Sunday mornings and nothing at all the rest of the week.
2. **Portobello Road Market** (Antiques · Saturdays · Notting Hill): Antiques at the Notting Hill end on Saturdays, food and general goods further north during the week.
3. **Old Spitalfields Market** (Covered · Most days · Spitalfields): A covered Victorian market hall running most days, with the traders rotating by theme through the week. [Website](https://www.oldspitalfieldsmarket.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Broadway Market** (Food · Saturdays · Hackney): A Hackney street market on Saturdays, food-led, and the best excuse to walk the Regent's Canal towpath afterwards. [Website](https://broadwaymarket.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Maltby Street Market** (Food · Weekends · Bermondsey): A weekend run of railway arches in Bermondsey, small enough to eat your way along in an hour. [Website](https://www.maltbystreetmarket.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best theatre & music in London

Six stages that define what London does after dark, beyond the West End musicals.

1. **National Theatre** (Drama · South Bank): Three auditoriums in a Brutalist block on the South Bank, running new writing and revivals in repertory. [Website](https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Royal Ballet and Opera** (Opera & ballet · Covent Garden): The Covent Garden house, renamed from the Royal Opera House in 2024, home to both the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet. [Website](https://www.rbo.org.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

4. **Barbican Centre** (Multi-arts · City of London): A vast multi-arts venue buried inside a Brutalist estate that is worth the wander in its own right. [Website](https://www.barbican.org.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Ronnie Scott's** (Jazz · Soho): The Soho jazz club, running since 1959, with late sets that go on well past the last Tube. [Website](https://www.ronniescotts.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Wigmore Hall** (Chamber music · Marylebone): A small Marylebone recital hall with the best acoustics in the city for chamber music and song. [Website](https://www.wigmore-hall.org.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best neighbourhoods in London

Six areas that each run their own high street. Pick one a day and walk it.

1. **Soho** (Nightlife · West End): A dense square of restaurants, theatres, record shops and drinking dens between Oxford Street and Chinatown.
2. **Shoreditch** (Food & bars · East London): Furniture trade, then galleries, now bars and restaurants. Best on a weekday, when it goes back to being a working district.
3. **Notting Hill** (Market & terraces · West London): Pastel terraces, the Portobello market and the carnival in August. Quieter and more residential than the films suggest.
4. **Marylebone** (Shopping · Central): A village high street a block from Oxford Street, with independent shops and the calmest good restaurants in central London.
5. **Peckham** (Art & rooftops · South East): The most changed neighbourhood in south London: galleries, a rooftop bar in a car park, and Rye Lane doing what it always did.
6. **Clerkenwell** (Design & food · City fringe): Medieval street plan, Italian delis, design studios and St. JOHN. Dead at weekends, which is part of the appeal.

## Best day trips in London

1. **Oxford** (City · ~1 hr · Oxfordshire): College quads, the Bodleian and the Ashmolean, roughly an hour by train from Paddington or Marylebone.

3. **Bath** (City · ~1.5 hr · Somerset): Georgian crescents and the Roman bath complex, about ninety minutes from Paddington. The best full-day trip on this list. [Website](https://www.romanbaths.co.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Brighton** (Coast · ~1 hr · East Sussex): Pebble beach, the Royal Pavilion and the Lanes, an hour from Victoria or London Bridge. Go for the day, stay for dinner. [Website](https://brightonmuseums.org.uk/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## London transport & airports

## London travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in London?

Four is the honest minimum for a first visit: one for the City and the Tower, one for Westminster and the South Bank, one for the South Kensington museums, and one for a market and a neighbourhood. Five lets you add a day trip without rushing the rest.

### Are London's museums really free?

The permanent collections of the national museums are, and have been since December 2001. That covers the British Museum, the National Gallery, the V&A, the Natural History and Science Museums, Tate Modern and Tate Britain, and the Imperial War Museum. Temporary exhibitions at all of them are ticketed separately.

### What is the cheapest way to pay for the Tube and buses?

Tap a contactless bank card or phone at the gate. Daily and weekly capping is applied automatically, so you never pay more than the equivalent travelcard would have cost, and there is nothing to buy in advance. Buses take no cash, only contactless or Oyster.

### When is the best time to visit London?

May, June and September. You get long daylight, the parks at their best and the outdoor theatre season running, without the August crowds or school-holiday pricing. Winter is genuinely fine for museums and theatre, but the daylight is short.

### Which sights need booking ahead?

The ticketed ones, particularly the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Kew and anything at the Globe or in the West End. The free museums do not usually require it for their permanent collections, though some ask you to reserve a slot at busy times, so check the day before rather than on the way.
