# Top 10 Things To Do in Ljubljana

Ljubljana, Slovenia · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Ljubljana is a capital of about 292,000 people that behaves like a market town with a castle over it. What gives it a character out of proportion to its size is one architect: Plečnik spent three decades rebuilding the riverbanks, bridges, market and library into a single piece of civic design, listed by UNESCO in 2021.

## Quick answer

Two days covers Ljubljana and three is comfortable. Give the first to the centre on foot: the Triple Bridge, Plečnik's market colonnade, the Dragon Bridge and the funicular up to the castle. Give the second to the museums and to Plečnik House in Trnovo. Keep the third for Bled or Postojna Cave, both about an hour out.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep · Oct
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $110–180
- **Language:** Slovenian
- **Getting around:** Walk the centre, LPP buses with an Urbana card, BicikeLJ bikes
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.visitljubljana.com/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Ljubljana

### 1. Ljubljana Castle

Castle · Grajska planota 1, Ljubljana

Fortified since prehistory, and the reason to come is the 19th-century Outlook Tower: old town roofs below, Tivoli to the west, the Kamnik Alps north on a clear day. The funicular takes sixty seconds, the footpath fifteen minutes.

- **Time:** 2 hours
- **Cost:** Funicular and exhibition tickets; the courtyard is free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The courtyard, the ramparts walk and the chapel cost nothing. You pay for the funicular, the Outlook Tower and the exhibitions, so a quick look at the view is a walk up and back.

### 2. The Triple Bridge and Plečnik’s Central Market

UNESCO landmark · Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje, Ljubljana

Half an hour that explains the 2021 UNESCO listing. Plečnik flanked an 1840s crossing with two pedestrian spans, then built a curved market colonnade along the water. Stalls trade on Pogačarjev trg six days a week.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Saturday morning
- **Tip:** From late March into autumn, Fridays bring Odprta kuhna, an open-air kitchen market, onto Pogačarjev trg from roughly 10am to 10pm. It is the best single meal in the city for the money.

### 3. Plečnik House

House museum · Karunova ulica 4–6, Trnovo, Ljubljana

The architect who rebuilt a European capital's riverbanks, market and library did it from a suburban house in Trnovo, kept as he left it in 1957. The highest-value hour in the city for understanding everything else you look at.

- **Time:** 1 hour
- **Cost:** Museum ticket
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Group sizes inside the house are limited and entry runs on timed slots, so book ahead in summer. The walk from the centre takes about fifteen minutes through Krakovo's market gardens, which is the best approach.

### 4. National Gallery of Slovenia

Art museum · Prešernova cesta 24, Ljubljana

The national collection, and the rooms everyone comes for are the Slovene Impressionists: a small country painted in the 1900s with the light and loose hand of Paris. Robba's Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers stands in the glass hall.

- **Time:** 2 hours
- **Cost:** Museum ticket
- **Best at:** Weekday
- **Tip:** The Robba fountain stands in the glass hall between the two wings. The one outside the town hall on Mestni trg is the copy.

### 5. Metelkova Mesto

Alternative culture · Masarykova cesta 24, Ljubljana

Seven buildings of a Yugoslav army barracks, squatted in 1993 and run since as an autonomous culture centre. An open-air gallery by day, the cheapest live music in the city by night. A working squat rather than an attraction.

- **Time:** 1 hour by day
- **Cost:** Free to walk in; small cover at some venues
- **Best at:** Daylight for the art, after 10pm for music
- **Tip:** Photograph the walls, not the residents. The yard is somebody's home as well as a venue, and that is the one thing people there ask of visitors.

### 6. Tivoli Park

Park · Pod turnom 3, Ljubljana

The big park starts two minutes from the main shopping street and climbs west into the woods with no fence between. Its spine is the Jakopič Promenade, which carries free open-air photography shows changed several times a year.

- **Time:** 2 hours
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The path behind Tivoli Mansion climbs Rožnik in about twenty-five minutes and comes out at a small pilgrimage church and an inn with a terrace. It is the easiest hill walk in any European capital.

### 7. Dragon Bridge

Landmark · Resljeva cesta, Ljubljana

Four dragons on the corners of a 1901 concrete bridge, and the most photographed object in Slovenia. It was built as a jubilee bridge for Franz Joseph, but nobody used that name and the city made the dragons official in 1919.

- **Time:** 20 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Two smaller dragons crouch at the far corners and are much easier to photograph than the famous pair. Stand on the market colonnade side to get a whole dragon and the castle in one frame.

### 8. Moderna galerija

Art museum · Cankarjeva 15, Ljubljana

What Slovene artists did with the twentieth century, from the interwar avant garde to Neue Slowenische Kunst and IRWIN, who took the visual language of totalitarianism and refused to explain themselves.

- **Time:** 90 minutes
- **Cost:** Museum ticket
- **Best at:** Weekday afternoon
- **Tip:** MSUM at Maistrova 3 is a ten-minute walk away at Metelkova and holds the contemporary collection. Doing both in one afternoon is the natural pairing.

Links: [Website](https://www.mg-lj.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. City Museum of Ljubljana

History museum · Gosposka 15, Ljubljana

Three things: a stretch of Roman Emona street left in place under glass in the cellar, a clear run through the city's history upstairs, and the oldest wooden wheel with an axle found anywhere, roughly 5,200 years old.

- **Time:** 90 minutes
- **Cost:** Museum ticket
- **Best at:** Weekday
- **Tip:** The Roman road in the basement is part of the standard ticket and is easy to walk past. Go down before you go up.

Links: [Website](https://mgml.si/en/city-museum/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. St Nicholas’s Cathedral

Church · Dolničarjeva 1, Ljubljana

The green dome and twin towers that carry every photograph taken from the castle. Inside, Quaglio's illusionistic frescoes make the nave read far larger than it is. The 1996 bronze doors are worn bright where visitors touch them.

- **Time:** 30 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Between services
- **Tip:** Come in through the side door under the bronze bishops rather than the main west door. The first view of Quaglio's ceiling is better from that angle.

## Best restaurants in Ljubljana

Eight kitchens worth planning a meal around, from a starred castle tower to a sausage counter.

1. **Strelec** (Fine dining · Grajska planota 1, Ljubljana Castle): The castle's archer's tower, and the one Michelin-starred kitchen in Ljubljana. Igor Jagodic reworks old Carniolan recipes. Dinner only, and small. [Website](https://www.restavracija-strelec.si/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Atelje** (Modern Slovene · Nazorjeva ulica 2, Ljubljana): Jorg Zupan cooks the most technically ambitious food in the centre: short, sharply seasonal menus and a wine list leaning hard on Slovene growers. [Website](https://www.restavracijaatelje.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Monstera Bistro** (Bistro · Gosposka ulica 9, Ljubljana): Bine Volčič cooks one set menu for a room of thirty: you sit down, you stop choosing, and the food keeps coming. Lunch is the better value. [Website](https://www.monsterabistro.si/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Gostilna AS** (Seafood and Italian · Čopova ulica 5a, Ljubljana): A courtyard institution off Čopova since the 1980s, and where locals send visitors for Adriatic fish. The bar downstairs runs late in summer. [Website](https://www.gostilnaas.si/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Klobasarna** (Sausage counter · Ciril-Metodov trg 15, Ljubljana): A counter and a few stools serving kranjska klobasa with mustard and horseradish. Ten minutes, no ceremony, and the most Slovene thing in the old town.
6. **Druga Violina** (Traditional · Stari trg 21, Ljubljana): A gostilna on the old town's main street run as a social enterprise, staffed largely by people with disabilities. Low prices, and the best terrace in the city.
7. **TaBar** (Small plates · Ribji trg, old town, Ljubljana): A tapas bar on the fish square behind the Triple Bridge, working Slovene ingredients into single bites, with orange and natural wines alongside.
8. **Pop’s Place** (Burgers · Cankarjevo nabrežje, Ljubljana): The burger counter that made the format respectable here, with a cocktail bar attached and a queue at peak. The riverside terrace is why you wait.

## Best bars & cafes in Ljubljana

Where the city drinks: a Yugoslav rooftop, a squatted courtyard and a river lined with terraces.

1. **Nebotičnik** (Rooftop bar · Štefanova ulica 1, Ljubljana): The tenth-floor terrace of the 1933 skyscraper, briefly the tallest building in this part of Europe. Castle one side, Alps the other. Priced for the address.
2. **Pritličje** (Café and bar · Mestni trg 2, Ljubljana): A café, bar, comics shop and events space beside the town hall, explicitly LGBT-friendly and the most reliably mixed crowd in the centre.
3. **Kavarna Zvezda** (Café · Wolfova ulica, by Congress Square, Ljubljana): The classic coffee-and-cake stop, known citywide for its cream cake. Old-fashioned enough that half the room is reading a newspaper.
4. **Vinoteka Movia** (Wine bar · Mestni trg, beside the town hall, Ljubljana): The tasting room of the Movia estate from Brda, pouring its own wines by the glass. The best short course in Slovene wine in the old town.
5. **Dvorni bar** (Wine bar · Dvorni trg, Ljubljana): A riverside bar that takes Slovene wine seriously, with a long by-the-glass list arranged by region. Quieter than the strip either side of it.
6. **Cafe Čokl** (Specialty coffee · Krekov trg, Ljubljana): A tiny organic coffee bar opposite the funicular, roasting-led and standing-room-heavy. Where to go when the terraces treat coffee as an afterthought.
7. **Pivnica Union** (Brewery tap · Pivovarniška ulica, Ljubljana): The tap room of the brewery that has made beer in this quarter since 1864. Beer-hall food, tours, and fifteen minutes from the centre.
8. **Klub Daktari** (Bar · Krekov trg, Ljubljana): A worn, warm bar of mismatched furniture by the funicular, running gigs and exhibitions in a room that feels like somebody's flat.

## Best museums & galleries in Ljubljana

Eight collections beyond the top 10, split between Prešernova cesta and the Metelkova quarter.

1. **National Museum of Slovenia** (National collection · Prešernova cesta 20, Ljubljana): Archaeology first: the Divje Babe bone flute, the Vače situla, Roman Emona. The 1888 building earns the ticket by itself. [Website](https://www.nms.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Slovene Ethnographic Museum** (Ethnography · Metelkova ulica 2, Ljubljana): How Slovenes actually lived: painted beehive panels, carnival masks, dowry chests. The top-floor terrace looks over Metelkova. [Website](https://www.etno-muzej.si/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Cukrarna** (Contemporary art · Poljanski nasip 40, Ljubljana): A vast 19th-century sugar refinery gutted and reopened in 2021 as a gallery of raw concrete. Go in whatever is on, because the building is the exhibit. [Website](https://cukrarna.art/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova** (Contemporary art · Maistrova 3, Ljubljana): The contemporary half of Moderna galerija, holding Arteast 2000+. Smaller, sharper and less crowded than the parent house. [Website](https://www.mg-lj.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **International Centre of Graphic Arts** (Prints · Tivoli Mansion, Pod turnom 3, Ljubljana): A 17th-century mansion in Tivoli given over to printmaking, and home of the Biennial of Graphic Arts, which has run since 1955. [Website](https://mglc.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Slovenian Museum of Natural History** (Natural history · Prešernova cesta 20, Ljubljana): Sharing the 1888 palace with the National Museum. The section people come for is the cave fauna, including the olm, which can go years without eating. [Website](https://www.pms-lj.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
7. **Museum of Architecture and Design** (Design · Fužine Castle, Ljubljana): The national collection in a Renaissance castle on the river, holding the Plečnik archive. The setting alone is worth the bus ride.
8. **National Museum of Contemporary History** (Modern history · Cekin Mansion, Tivoli Park, Ljubljana): Slovenia's twentieth century in one Baroque mansion in Tivoli, from two world wars to the ten-day war of 1991. The clearest account of how the country got here.

## The best Plečnik landmarks in Ljubljana

Six more pieces of Jože Plečnik’s rebuilt Ljubljana, inscribed by UNESCO in 2021.

1. **National and University Library** (Library · Turjaška 1, Ljubljana): Plečnik's masterpiece: rough Slovene stone set into brick, and a black marble stair climbing out of deliberate darkness into a light-filled reading room. [Website](https://www.nuk.uni-lj.si/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Cobblers’ Bridge** (Bridge · Jurčičev trg, Ljubljana): A wide stone platform on columns rather than a crossing, designed as a square where two banks meet. The best place to sit on the river.
3. **Congress Square and Zvezda Park** (Square · Kongresni trg, Ljubljana): The ceremonial square, given its present form by Plečnik as the northern end of his land axis down to the library. The Philharmonic faces onto it.
4. **Trnovo Bridge** (Bridge · Trnovski pristan, Ljubljana): A bridge planted with birch trees and built wide enough to work as the forecourt of the church behind it. Plečnik was baptised there and lived a minute away.
5. **Žale, the Garden of All Saints** (Cemetery · Bežigrad, north of the centre, Ljubljana): Plečnik's city of the dead: a monumental gateway onto a park of chapels, each in a different classical order, one per parish.
6. **Church of St Michael in Črna vas** (Church · Črna vas, Ljubljana Marshes): A church on stilts in the marsh, built on a tight budget in wood, brick and stone. The most inventive small building Plečnik made, and the least visited.

## Best parks & green space in Ljubljana

Ljubljana was European Green Capital in 2016, and these four are part of the reason.

1. **University Botanic Gardens** (Botanic garden · Ižanska cesta 15, Ljubljana): Founded in 1810 and still on its original ground, which makes it the oldest continuously operating scientific institution in Slovenia. Around 4,500 species. [Website](https://www.botanicni-vrt.si/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Rožnik hill and the Path of Remembrance** (Hill walk · Rožnik, west of Tivoli Park, Ljubljana): Rožnik climbs straight out of Tivoli in twenty-five minutes to a church and an inn. Around the city runs a 34-kilometre ring on the line of the wartime wire.
3. **Ljubljana Marshes Nature Park** (Nature park · Ljubljansko barje, south of Ljubljana): The wetland south of the city, where the pile dwellings are UNESCO-listed and the 5,200-year-old wheel was found. Flat cycling, and corncrakes in spring.
4. **Ljubljana Zoo** (Zoo · Večna pot 70, Ljubljana): On the wooded slope below Rožnik, strong on European species, with enough forest between the enclosures that a visit doubles as a walk. [Website](https://www.zoo-ljubljana.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best neighborhoods in Ljubljana

Five districts and what each is actually like to stay in.

1. **Old Town** (Historic centre · Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg, Ljubljana): One curving street under the castle hill that changes name three times, lined with Baroque townhouses and most of the terraces. Loud until late in summer.
2. **Center and Miklošičeva** (City centre · Prešernov trg to the railway station, Ljubljana): The left bank rebuilt in Vienna Secession style after the 1895 earthquake, with the best Art Nouveau façades in the country. The base if you arrive by train.
3. **Trnovo and Krakovo** (Residential · South of the centre along the Ljubljanica, Ljubljana): Krakovo's market gardens still supply the Central Market; Trnovo behind it holds Plečnik's house. Ten minutes out, and the pleasantest place to stay.
4. **Tabor and Metelkova** (Cultural quarter · North-east of the centre, Ljubljana): The museum quarter and the squat share a few blocks with student housing and the stations just west. Cheap, with club noise at weekends.
5. **Šiška** (Outer district · North-west of the centre, Ljubljana): Residential, beyond Tivoli, worth knowing for Kino Šiška, the city's main mid-size music venue, and for prices that drop past the ring road.

## Best day trips in Ljubljana

Ljubljana sits in the middle of the country. Eight of the best things in Slovenia are inside two hours.

1. **Lake Bled** (Alpine lake · Bled, about 55 km north-west): The island church, the cliff-top castle and the Julian Alps behind, an hour by bus. Walk the shore path, take a pletna boat, eat a kremna rezina. [Website](https://www.bled.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle** (Cave system · Postojna, about 50 km south-west): Karst passage toured by an underground train running since the 1870s, with olms in the aquarium. Predjama Castle is on a combined ticket. An hour by train. [Website](https://www.postojnska-jama.eu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Škocjan Caves** (UNESCO cave · Divača, about 75 km south-west): The alternative to Postojna and for many the better one: an underground river canyon crossed on a footbridge in the dark. UNESCO listed in 1986. [Website](https://www.park-skocjanske-jame.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Vintgar Gorge** (Gorge walk · Podhom, near Bled): A 1,600-metre boardwalk pinned to a gorge wall, ending at a waterfall four kilometres from Bled. Numbers are capped and tickets must be booked ahead. [Website](https://www.vintgar.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Velika Planina** (Mountain plateau · Above Kamnik, about 40 km north): A plateau of oval wooden herders' huts, one of the last working shepherd settlements in Europe, reached by cable car above Kamnik. Herds move up in June. [Website](https://www.velikaplanina.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Piran** (Coastal town · Piran, about 120 km south-west): Venetian Istria on a headland: a marble square, a campanile modelled on San Marco, a walled cemetery hill. Two hours by bus, and the Sečovlje salt pans beyond. [Website](https://www.portoroz.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
7. **Lake Bohinj** (Alpine lake · Bohinj, about 80 km north-west): Bled's bigger, quieter neighbour inside Triglav National Park, with swimming off the shore and the Vogel cable car for the view down the lake.
8. **Idrija** (Mining town · Idrija, about 60 km west): Europe's second-largest mercury mine, worked from 1490 to 1995 and UNESCO-listed. The town also gave the country its lace and its žlikrofi.

## Festivals & annual events in Ljubljana (2026)

- **Odprta kuhna** (Mar – Oct): An open-air kitchen market on Pogačarjev trg every Friday from late March to autumn. Not in heavy rain.
- **Druga Godba** (May): World, folk and improvised music since the mid-1980s, centred on the Križanke open-air theatre. Late May.
- **Ana Desetnica** (Jun – Jul): The international street theatre festival, which puts acrobats and puppeteers on the squares and charges nothing.
- **Ljubljana Jazz Festival** (Jun – Jul): Founded in 1960 and the oldest jazz festival in Europe still running. Adventurous rather than nostalgic.
- **Ljubljana Festival** (Jun – Sep): The main classical, opera and dance season, staged largely open-air at Križanke through the summer.
- **Ljubljana Marathon** (Oct): The largest running event in Slovenia, held every autumn since 1996. Central streets close for the day.
- **LIFFe, the Ljubljana International Film Festival** (Nov): Slovenia's biggest film festival, each November, with a competition for first and second features.
- **Festive December** (Dec): Light installations along the embankments, market stalls from late November, and free concerts through the month.

## Must-try dishes in Ljubljana, Slovenia

- **Kranjska klobasa**: The EU-protected Carniolan sausage, boiled rather than grilled, with mustard and grated horseradish.
- **Štruklji**: Rolled dough dumplings, boiled or baked. Cottage cheese is standard, tarragon the one to try.
- **Potica**: The national rolled cake, thin yeast dough coiled around a filling. Walnut is the classic.
- **Jota**: Sauerkraut or soured turnip stewed with beans and smoked pork. Better on the second day.
- **Ričet**: Barley and bean soup with smoked ribs, the everyday winter dish inland. Ordered as a main.
- **Idrijski žlikrofi**: Potato dumplings pinched into a hat shape, and the first Slovene dish to win EU protection.
- **Prekmurska gibanica**: Layers of poppy seed, cottage cheese, walnut and apple. EU-protected, and heavy enough to be a meal.
- **Kremna rezina**: The Bled cream cake: vanilla custard and whipped cream between two sheets of puff pastry.

## Ljubljana transport & airports

- **Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport** (LJU): Slovenia's only international airport, 26 kilometres north at Brnik, and small: many travellers arrive via Venice, Zagreb or Vienna instead. Bus 28 reaches the centre in about 45 minutes. [Website](https://www.lju-airport.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **Railway and bus station** (Rail): Trains and intercity buses share one site ten minutes north of Prešernov trg, with direct trains to Zagreb, Vienna and Trieste. Buses are often faster than trains inside Slovenia. [Website](https://potniski.sz.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **LPP city buses and the Urbana card** (Bus): Buses and nothing else: no tram, no metro. Fares are cashless on an Urbana card, one validation covering 90 minutes. Most visitors barely use the network. [Website](https://www.lpp.si/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **On foot, BicikeLJ and Kavalir** (Local): The core has been car-free since 2007 and the pedestrian zone covers twelve hectares, so walking is the default. BicikeLJ is the bike-share; free Kavalir electric carts carry anyone who needs a lift.

## Interesting facts

- UNESCO listed the works of Jože Plečnik in 2021, as seven components rather than one monument, from the river embankments to Žale cemetery.
- The oldest wooden wheel with an axle found anywhere came out of the marshes south of the city in 2002. It is roughly 5,200 years old.
- An 1895 earthquake wrecked a tenth of the city and rebuilt it: 400 buildings in fifteen years, ringing a Baroque core in Secession façades.
- The 1901 Dragon Bridge was one of the first large reinforced-concrete bridges in the region, with dragons by a student of Otto Wagner.
- European Green Capital in 2016. Cars left the historic core in 2007, and free Kavalir electric carts carry anyone who cannot walk it.

## Ljubljana travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Ljubljana?

Two full days cover the city: one for the centre, the castle and Plečnik’s riverside, one for the museums and Plečnik House in Trnovo. A third day is best spent out of town, because Ljubljana sits in the middle of the country and Bled, Postojna and the Škocjan Caves are each about an hour away. Four days lets you add the coast.

### What is Ljubljana known for?

Three things. Jože Plečnik's architecture, listed by UNESCO in 2021. The dragon, on the city's coat of arms and on the 1901 bridge. And its scale: a capital of under 300,000 with a car-free centre and the Alps visible from the castle.

### Is Ljubljana walkable?

Yes, and by design. The core has been closed to cars since 2007, and the walk from the railway station to the far end of the old town takes about twenty minutes. There are buses but no tram, and most visitors never need one.

### Can you visit Lake Bled as a day trip from Ljubljana?

Comfortably. Buses reach Bled in about an hour, and trains take the same to Lesce-Bled with a connecting bus. A day gives you the shore path, a pletna boat to the island and the castle. Vintgar Gorge needs a timed ticket booked ahead.

### When is the best time to visit Ljubljana?

May, June, September and early October, when the riverside terraces are open and the trips into the Alps and the karst are at their best. July and August are hot in the basin. December is the other good option, for the lights along the river.
