# Top 10 Things To Do in Limassol

Limassol, Cyprus · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Cyprus keeps its wine country, its Greco-Roman ruins and its best-preserved medieval castle within half an hour of one seafront. Limassol is the base for all three, and the island's second city rewards a slower visit than the cruise stop it is often taken for.

## Quick answer

Start at Kourion, the Greco-Roman theatre cut into the cliff above Episkopi Bay, then work east through the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, Kolossi Castle and the medieval museum inside Limassol Castle. Give an afternoon to Omodos and the Krasochoria wine villages, and end on the Molos, the seafront park running from the old port to the tourist strip.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** April to June, September to November
- **Ideal length:** 3 to 4 days
- **Budget per day:** €60-130
- **Language:** Greek, English widely spoken
- **Getting around:** EMEL buses and a hire car for the wine villages

## The 10 best things to do in Limassol

### 1. Kourion, the theatre above Episkopi Bay

Ruins · Episkopi, Limassol District

The Greco-Roman theatre is cut into the cliff so the sea fills the gap behind the stage, and the House of Eustolios keeps its floor mosaics under cover a short walk uphill. Come early: there is almost no shade on the plateau, and summer closing is 19:30.

- **Time:** 2-3 hrs
- **Cost:** €4.50
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** No shade on site

### 2. Limassol Castle and the Cyprus Medieval Museum

Museum · Richard and Berengaria Street, Old Town

The 13th-century castle stands on a Byzantine one near the old harbour and now holds the island's medieval collection: pottery, tombstones, Byzantine silver, weapons and coins. Richard the Lionheart is said to have married Berengaria of Navarre here in 1191.

- **Time:** 1-2 hrs
- **Cost:** €4.50
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Climb to the roof

### 3. Walk the Molos seafront park

Park · Molos promenade, between the old port and Dasoudi

A kilometre of reclaimed seafront with a separated running and cycling track, sculpture, shade and a paved walking strip. It is the one part of the city built for the evening rather than the car, and it links the old port to the tourist strip.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Start at the old port

### 4. The Old Town and Saripolou Square after dark

Neighborhood · Saripolou Square and the streets around the castle

The lanes behind the castle are pedestrianised limestone, and Saripolou Square is where the city drinks: open seating, students, bars that run past midnight. Cocktails sit around €7 to €12 and clubs do not fill until eleven.

- **Time:** An evening
- **Cost:** Free to walk
- **Best at:** After 21:00
- **Tip:** Eat before 21:00

### 5. Omodos and the Krasochoria wine villages

Day trip · Omodos, Limassol District, 40 km northwest

Cobbled lanes, a 17th-century monastery and cellars behind stone archways, with 40-odd family wineries in the villages around it. This is the Commandaria country, and Omodos is the practical base for a day of it. You need a car or the EMEL village bus.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Free to walk
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Drive, or take the village bus

### 6. The Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates

Ruins · Episkopi, 2.5 km west of Kourion

One of the island's great religious centres, where Apollo was worshipped as god of the woodlands. The small temple, the baths, the gymnasium and the circular monument survive, and it is quieter than Kourion for a fraction of the ticket.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** €2.50
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Pair it with Kourion

### 7. Amathus, on the coast road east

Ruins · Agios Tychonas, 10 km east of the centre

One of the ancient royal cities of Cyprus, in use until about 300 BC and now spread over the slope in front of Agios Tychonas. The agora, the baths and the acropolis are the parts worth the climb, and the hotels below make it an easy walk.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** €2.50
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Wear real shoes

Links: [Visit Cyprus](https://www.visitcyprus.com/discover-cyprus/culture/sites-and-monuments/amathous-archaeological-site/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Kolossi Castle

Landmark · Kolossi village, 14 km west

A compact Crusader keep in the middle of sugar-cane and vine country, once the headquarters of the Knights of St John. The sweet wine they shipped from here is why Commandaria carries the name of their commandery.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** €2.50
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** On the way to Kourion

Links: [Visit Cyprus](https://www.visitcyprus.com/discover-cyprus/culture/sites-and-monuments/kolossi-medieval-castle/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Governor's Beach and the white chalk cliffs

Beach · Pentakomo, 30 km east of Limassol

Dark sand between low white chalk cliffs, a run of tavernas above it and one of five Limassol district beaches to hold a Blue Flag in 2026. It is the swim to make when the city seafront is busy or the water there looks wrong.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Sunbeds cost extra

### 10. Limassol Marina and the old port

Waterfront · Limassol Marina, beside the old port

The old port rebuilt as a superyacht marina in 2014, with restaurants, shops and a small beach that also carries a 2026 Blue Flag. Walk in from the castle rather than driving: the marina sits at the western end of the Molos.

- **Time:** 1-2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** Walk in from the castle

## Limassol travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Limassol?

Three to four. One covers the castle, the old town and the Molos, a second takes the western ruins at Kourion, Apollo Hylates and Kolossi, and a third belongs to Omodos and the wine villages. A fourth buys a beach day or Paphos.

### Which airport should you fly into for Limassol?

Larnaca is the main gateway and sits about an hour east. Paphos is roughly an hour and a quarter west and often takes the charters. Both are run by Hermes Airports, and the Limassol Airport Express serves each from €10.

### Do you need a car in Limassol?

Not in the city. EMEL buses cover the seafront, the centre and Germasogeia for about €1.50 a ride. You do need one for the Krasochoria: the village routes exist but run to a timetable built for residents, not for a day of tasting.

### When is the best time to visit Limassol?

April to June and September to November. July and August average around 26C and the archaeological sites have no shade. Winter is mild and wet, and February brings the carnival, which is a reason to come rather than a reason to avoid it.

### Can you swim at the beaches in Limassol?

Yes, but choose. Five district beaches held a Blue Flag in 2026: Pissouri, Kourion, Parekklisia, Governor's Beach and Limassol Marina. Dasoudi and the busy municipal seafront were not submitted after pollution was reported the previous year.
