# Top 10 Things To Do in Kristiansand

Kristiansand, Norway · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 11 min read

Kristiansand is Norway's summer coast rather than its fjord country, and it is a different holiday. The old town is a 1641 grid of white wooden houses, the beach sits in the middle of it, and the ferry to Denmark leaves from the quay. Sun is the local currency.

## Quick answer

Two days covers Kristiansand. Give the first to the water: Bystranda in the middle of town, the 3.4 km loop around Odderøya, and Kunstsilo at the end of it. Keep the second for Dyreparken if you have children, or for Posebyen, Ravnedalen and the gun battery at Møvik if you do not. A third day buys Lindesnes lighthouse or the crossing to Denmark.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Jun · Jul · Aug
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** NOK 1,200–2,300
- **Language:** Norwegian, with English spoken almost everywhere
- **Getting around:** Kvadraturen on foot, AKT buses to the zoo and the beaches
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.visitnorway.com/places-to-go/southern-norway/kristiansand/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Kristiansand

### 1. Kristiansand Dyreparken

Family · Dyreparkveien 2, 4609 Kristiansand

Southern Norway's biggest family attraction, and the reason most families come south at all. The zoo runs from Nordic wolves to a tropical hall, and Kardemomme By is the storybook town children recognise before they arrive. Book online; the gate queue in July is the slow part.

- **Time:** Full day
- **Cost:** Ticket required
- **Best at:** Opening, 10am
- **Tip:** The park runs long summer hours and short winter ones. Check the day before

### 2. Kunstsilo

Museum · Sjølystveien 8, 4610 Kristiansand

A converted grain silo on the Odderøya waterfront, open since May 2024. Inside is the Tangen collection: more than 5,500 works of Nordic modernism, the largest private holding of it anywhere. Two hours covers the art, and the building is half the visit.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticket required
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** It stays open to 9pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Links: [Kunstsilo](https://www.kunstsilo.no/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Posebyen

Neighbourhood · Posebyen, Kvadraturen, 4611 Kristiansand

The old town north of the market square: single-storey white wooden houses on a grid more than three centuries old, and the longest continuous wooden housing in northern Europe. An hour walks it. Posebyhaven, a backyard of cafes and small shops, is the stop in the middle.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Go on foot. The lanes are residential and parking is for those who live there

Links: [Visit Sørlandet](https://en.visitsorlandet.com/destinations/kristiansand/attractions-in-kristiansand/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 4. Odderøya

Outdoors · Odderøya, 4610 Kristiansand

A quarantine station, then a naval base, now the city's cultural island, five minutes on foot from the fish quay. The loop trail runs 3.4 km past wartime bunkers, the lighthouse and swimming rocks. Kilden and Kunstsilo sit at the near end, so the walk starts and finishes with something else.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** The paths are unpaved and loose in places. Trainers with grip, not sandals

### 5. Bystranda

Beach · Strandpromenaden, 4610 Kristiansand

A Blue Flag sand beach in the middle of the city, with a swimming pier, shallow water and the Aquarama waterpark behind it. The sea reaches about 16°C in July, which counts as warm in Norway. Palmesus takes the whole beach for a weekend in late June.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Aquarama is the wet-weather plan and it is thirty seconds away

Links: [Visit Norway](https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/kristiansand-city-beach/19968/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Ravnedalen Nature Park

Outdoors · Ravnedalsveien 34, 4614 Kristiansand

A wooded valley a kilometre from the centre, cut out by garrison soldiers in the 1870s and opened as a park in 1875. A pond, rhododendrons and magnolias, about 70 climbing routes on the cliffs, and a cafe at the bottom. Ravnedalen Live puts concerts in it for three days each July.

- **Time:** 1.5 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late spring
- **Tip:** Walk up through Baneheia and come down through the valley, not the reverse

Links: [Visit Norway](https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/ravnedalen-valley-nature-park/86344/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Kristiansand Kanonmuseum

Museum · Møvik Fort, 4637 Kristiansand

Møvik Fort, eight kilometres south, holds the only 38 cm Krupp gun left in the world: a 110 tonne barrel, close to twenty metres long, built to close the strait to Denmark. The tunnels and bunkers behind it are as interesting as the gun itself.

- **Time:** 1.5 hr
- **Cost:** Ticket required
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** Underground it is cold whatever the forecast. Take a jacket

Links: [Vest-Agder-museet](https://www.vestagdermuseet.no/kanonmuseum/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Christiansholm Fortress

Landmark · Østre Strandgate 52B, 4608 Kristiansand

The round fort on the waterfront, finished in 1672 to guard the harbour from the sea. It is a short visit, free to walk around the outside, and it holds exhibitions and concerts through the summer. Bystranda begins on the other side of it.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free outside
- **Best at:** Any time
- **Tip:** Pair it with the boardwalk. The two are the same ten minutes

Links: [Visit Norway](https://www.visitnorway.no/reisemal/sorlandet/kristiansand/listings-kristiansand/christiansholm-festning/19958/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Fiskebrygga

Food · Gravane, 4610 Kristiansand

The old fish wharf, rebuilt as a basin of restaurants and quay tables where local boats still tie up. Come for fish soup and fish cakes rather than the view alone, and pick the kitchen rather than the terrace. The Christmas lights are switched on here in mid-November.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Summer evening
- **Tip:** The quality gap between neighbouring seafood places is real. Read the menu first

Links: [Visit Norway](https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/fiskebrygga-the-fish-quay-in-kristiansand/19910/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Kilden Performing Arts Centre

Culture · Sjølystveien 2, 4610 Kristiansand

The performing arts centre on the harbour, behind an oak wave of a facade. It houses the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Agder Teater and Opera Sør, so something is usually on. Check the programme before you book dinner, not after.

- **Time:** Evening
- **Cost:** By event
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** The foyer and the facade are worth a look even with no ticket

## Kristiansand travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Kristiansand?

Two days covers the city: one for Bystranda, the Odderøya loop and Kunstsilo, one for Dyreparken if you have children or for Posebyen, Ravnedalen and the Møvik gun battery if you do not. A third day buys Lindesnes lighthouse or Mandal's beach.

### When is the best time to visit Kristiansand?

June to August. July is the warmest month, averaging about 21°C by day with roughly 271 hours of sunshine, and the sea reaches around 16°C. The festivals stack into the same weeks, so book beds well ahead.

### How do you get from Kristiansand airport into the city?

AKT bus 35 runs from Kjevik to the centre in about 30 minutes, roughly hourly, for 57 NOK on board or 34 NOK in the AKT app. Taxis wait outside arrivals. The dedicated airport coach is not running at present.

### Can you reach Denmark from Kristiansand?

Yes, from the quay in the middle of town. Color Line crosses to Hirtshals in about 3 hours 15 minutes. Fjord Line's Fjord FSTR catamaran takes 2 hours 25 from March to October, and its cruise ferries closer to four hours year round.

### Is Kristiansand worth visiting without children?

Yes. Dyreparken is the family draw, but Kunstsilo, the Odderøya loop, Posebyen and the Møvik gun battery fill two days on their own, and the beach and the archipelago boat cost nothing.
