# Top 10 Things To Do in Khujand

Khujand, Tajikistan · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 10 min read

Tajikistan's second city sits on the Syr Darya where the Ferghana valley opens, and it is older than almost anywhere in Central Asia: Alexander took it in 329 BC and called it Alexandria Eschate, the furthest. Leninabad for most of the Soviet era, it is now the capital of Sughd and the north's market town.

## Quick answer

Khujand is the Ferghana valley's Tajik gateway and an easy two days. Start at Panjshanbe Bazaar and the Sheikh Muslihiddin complex across the square, then walk to the fortress and the Sughd history museum. Ride the cable car over the Syr Darya to Somoni Park for the evening. On day two see Arbob Palace and swim in the Tajik Sea, or drive to Istaravshan.

## Quick facts

- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** $30–70

## The 10 best things to do in Khujand

### 1. Shop Panjshanbe Bazaar

Market · Panjshanbe Bazaar, old town, Khujand

One of the largest covered markets in Central Asia, a Soviet-era pavilion with oriental arches facing the Sheikh Muslihiddin mosque. Go early for the dried fruit and nut rows, taste before you buy and bargain; the name means Thursday, the old market day.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free entry
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Busiest on Thursdays

### 2. Climb the walls of Khujand Fortress

Landmark · Khujand Fortress, left bank of the Syr Darya

The citadel on the river was rebuilt again and again, most famously after its governor Timur Malik held it against the Mongols in 1219. Walk the restored walls for the river view, then step into the Historical Museum of Sughd in the southeast corner.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free outside, museum ticketed
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Pair it with the museum

### 3. Tour the Historical Museum of Sughd

Museum · Inside Khujand Fortress, Khujand

The region's story from prehistory to independence, told inside the fortress walls; the marble mosaics of Alexander the Great are the set piece. Allow an hour, and ask at the door whether the small archaeology museum in the eastern wall is open on the same ticket.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** About 20 somoni
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Carry cash for tickets

### 4. Visit the Sheikh Muslihiddin complex

Landmark · Opposite Panjshanbe Bazaar, old town

A mausoleum for Muslihiddin Khujandi, the 12th-century poet and ruler of the town, rebuilt after the Mongols, with a mosque and a 19th-century minaret beside it. It is a working shrine: dress modestly, and come between prayers.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Shoulders and knees covered

### 5. See Arbob Palace

Landmark · Arbob, Bobojon Gafurov district, about 6 km from the centre

A collective-farm palace built in 1957 and modelled on Peterhof, where the Supreme Soviet's 1992 session elected Emomali Rahmon chairman. The south wing holds a museum of the farm and of collectivisation; the formal gardens are the reason to linger.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ask at the gate
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Taxi from the centre

### 6. Ride the cable car over the Syr Darya

Experience · Somoni Park to Khujand Fortress

A cable car crosses the river between Somoni Park on the right bank and the fortress on the left, the quickest way to see how the city sits on the water. The lower station is the blue building in the park. Ride it toward the fortress late in the day, with the low sun on the water.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** 15 somoni, VIP cabin 20
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Check it is running before you plan

### 7. Walk Kamol Khujandi Park

Park · Between the fortress and the Syr Darya

A memorial park rebuilt from 2014 on the riverbank below the fortress, where the poet Kamol Khujandi is said to have been born. He is buried in Tabriz; the tomb here is symbolic, consecrated with soil from his grave, and a bronze statue stands nearby.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** Join the locals after dark

### 8. Find the Lenin in Victory Park

Monument · Victory Park, west of the centre

Moved out of the centre in 2011 and still the tallest Lenin in Central Asia, about 12 metres of statue on a pedestal of the same height. The park is a short taxi ride out and turns into a fairground in the evening.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** Agree the taxi fare both ways

### 9. Swim in the Tajik Sea

Nature · Kayrakkum Reservoir, Guliston, about 20 km east

The Kayrakkum reservoir on the Syr Darya, renamed the Tajik Sea by parliament in 2016 and lined with Soviet-era sanatoriums. Skip the free beach by the dam, which is often littered, and pay the small fee at a sanatorium beach instead.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Minibus, beach fees
- **Best at:** Jun to Sep
- **Tip:** Bring water and shade

### 10. Day-trip to Istaravshan

Day trip · Istaravshan, about 75 km southwest

One of Tajikistan's oldest towns, an hour by road, with the blue-domed Kok Gumbaz madrasa, the hilltop Mug Teppe fortress and the Hazrati Shoh mausoleum. One day covers it; go on the way to or from Dushanbe if you travel by road.

## Khujand travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Khujand?

### When is the best time to visit Khujand?

April and May, or September and October. July and August regularly pass 35°C with almost no rain, which is fine for the Tajik Sea but hard for walking the city at midday.

### How do you get from Dushanbe to Khujand?

Fly with Somon Air in about an hour, or take a shared taxi over the Anzob tunnel on the M34, roughly five to six hours. The road is scenic and crosses high passes, so allow for weather in winter.

### Can you cross from Tashkent to Khujand?

Yes, at the Oybek and Fotehobod crossing, open 24 hours. Take a taxi from Tashkent to the border, walk across, and pick up a shared taxi on the Tajik side. Allow about four hours in all, longer if the taxi waits to fill.

### Is Khujand expensive?

No. A bazaar lunch costs very little, taxis are cheap and museum tickets are a few dollars. Carry somoni in cash for the bazaar, taxis and ticket desks.
