# Top 10 Things To Do in Istanbul

Istanbul, Turkey · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 17 min read

Istanbul is two cities that share a name and a strait. The historic peninsula is dense, monumental and busy from nine in the morning; Kadıköy across the water is residential, loud in the evening and almost entirely Turkish. The Bosphorus between them is not a barrier but the transport network, and a ferry ticket costs the same as a tram ride.

## Quick answer

Give Istanbul four days and split them by geography rather than theme. One for the historic peninsula, where Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı and the Basilica Cistern sit within ten minutes of each other. One for Galata, Karaköy and Beyoğlu across the Golden Horn. One for the Bosphorus: a ferry north in the morning, a palace in the afternoon. One on the Asian side, where the city stops performing.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Apr · May · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 4–5 days
- **Budget per day:** $70–140
- **Language:** Turkish
- **Getting around:** Tram, ferry & metro

## The 10 best things to do in Istanbul

### 1. Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque

Landmark · Sultan Ahmet, Ayasofya Meydanı No:1, 34122 Fatih, Istanbul

Completed in 537 as the cathedral of Constantinople, converted to a mosque after the conquest of 1453, run as a museum from 1935, and a working mosque again since 2020. The dome is what people come for: it spans roughly 31 metres and rides on pendentives that make the weight look optional. Foreign visitors enter through the upper gallery.

- **Time:** 1.5 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Opening
- **Tip:** Gallery entrance

Links: [Website](https://ayasofyacamii.gov.tr/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 2. Topkapı Palace

Palace · Cankurtaran, 34122 Fatih, Istanbul

The seat of the Ottoman court for close to four centuries, laid out as four courtyards that get quieter the further in you walk. Check that your ticket covers the Harem, the section most people regret skipping; the Treasury and the Sacred Relics rooms justify the queue. The fourth courtyard looks down over the Golden Horn.

- **Time:** 4 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Opening
- **Tip:** Harem first

Links: [Website](https://muze.gov.tr/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

Mosque · Binbirdirek, At Meydanı Cd No:10, 34122 Fatih, Istanbul

Built between 1609 and 1616 for Ahmed I, and still the working neighbourhood mosque it was designed to be. The name comes from the İznik tilework lining the upper walls, best read in late-morning light. Six minarets, which was controversial at the time. Visitors use the north entrance, and the doors close to non-worshippers at each prayer.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Avoid prayer times

### 4. Grand Bazaar

Market · Beyazıt, Kalpakçılar Cd. No:22, 34126 Fatih, Istanbul

Trading since the 1450s across roughly sixty covered streets, which makes it one of the oldest covered markets anywhere still doing its original job. The tourist trade sits on the main axis; the interesting parts are the hans off the sides, where the gold and antique dealers work. Enter at Nuruosmaniye and let yourself get lost. There is no efficient route.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Closed Sundays

### 5. A Bosphorus ferry to Anadolu Kavağı

Boat trip · Eminönü ferry terminal, Rüstem Paşa, 34116 Fatih, Istanbul

The public ferry north from Eminönü is the best-value sightseeing in the city and costs a fraction of the private cruises tied up beside it. You pass the two palaces, the wooden yalı houses, both bridges and the Rumeli Hisarı fortress before the strait opens towards the Black Sea. Sit on the top deck, port side heading north.

- **Time:** 6 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Top deck, port side

Links: [Website](https://sehirhatlari.istanbul/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Basilica Cistern

Landmark · Alemdar, Yerebatan Cd. 1/3, 34110 Fatih, Istanbul

A sixth-century underground reservoir built under Justinian to hold water for the Great Palace, and the strangest fifteen minutes on the peninsula. Three hundred and thirty-six columns stand in shallow water under a lit vault, two of them footed on Medusa heads reused from an older building. It is cool, dim and loud with dripping, which is the point.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** Book a slot

### 7. Süleymaniye Mosque

Mosque · Süleymaniye, Prof. Sıddık Sami Onar Cd. No:1, 34116 Fatih, Istanbul

Mimar Sinan built this for Süleyman the Magnificent between 1550 and 1557, and most people who see both prefer it to the Blue Mosque. The interior is restrained where Sultanahmet is decorated, and the acoustics were engineered rather than inherited. The terrace behind holds the tombs and the best free view over the Golden Horn.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Walk the terrace

### 8. Chora Mosque (Kariye)

Mosque · Dervişali, Kariye Cami Sk. No:8, 34087 Fatih, Istanbul

The finest late-Byzantine mosaics and frescoes that survive anywhere, in a building small enough to read in an hour. The outer narthex tells the life of Christ, the inner the life of the Virgin, and the side chapel carries a Resurrection fresco that is the best thing in the room. It reopened in May 2024 after a four-year restoration. Pair it with Asitane next door.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Opening
- **Tip:** Pair with Edirnekapı

### 9. Galata Tower

Viewpoint · Bereketzade, Galata Kulesi, 34421 Beyoğlu, Istanbul

A Genoese watchtower of 1348, rebuilt more than once, and the reference point for the whole north bank. The balcony gives you the historic peninsula, the Golden Horn and the mouth of the Bosphorus in one turn, which is why the queue forms early and stays. Go in the last hour of daylight, or take the view from a Karaköy rooftop instead.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Golden hour
- **Tip:** Expect a queue

Links: [Website](https://muze.gov.tr/muze-detay?SectionId=GLT04&DistId=MRK&utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Dolmabahçe Palace

Palace · Vişnezade, Dolmabahçe Cd., 34357 Beşiktaş, Istanbul

When the Ottoman court left Topkapı in 1856 it moved here, into a European palace built on reclaimed shoreline with 285 rooms. The contrast is the reason to see both: Topkapı is a compound of pavilions, Dolmabahçe one long baroque statement facing the water. Atatürk died in a bedroom here in 1938, and the clocks in that wing are stopped.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Opening
- **Tip:** Arrive by ferry

## Best mosques in Istanbul

Six beyond the two on the Top 10, and every one of them still in daily use.

1. **Rüstem Paşa Mosque** (Mimar Sinan · İznik tiles · Eminönü, Fatih): Sinan built it above a row of shops in the market quarter, and the tile work inside is the densest in the city. Easy to walk past: the stairs are unmarked.
2. **Eyüp Sultan Mosque** (Pilgrimage · Golden Horn · Eyüpsultan): Built over the tomb of a companion of the Prophet, and the most visited religious site in Istanbul among Turks. Dress conservatively.
3. **New Mosque (Yeni Cami)** (Ottoman · Waterfront · Eminönü, Fatih): The one you see from every ferry, finished in 1665 after almost sixty years of stops and starts. Worth ten minutes for the tiled royal pavilion.
4. **Ortaköy Mosque** (Baroque · Bosphorus · Ortaköy, Beşiktaş): A small nineteenth-century mosque on the water with the suspension bridge behind it. Come at dusk and eat a kumpir in the square afterwards.
5. **Şehzade Mosque** (Mimar Sinan · 1548 · Şehzadebaşı, Fatih): Sinan called this his apprentice work and Süleymaniye his journeyman work, which tells you how high he set the bar. Almost empty most days, ten minutes from the aqueduct.
6. **Mihrimah Sultan Mosque** (Mimar Sinan · Light · Edirnekapı, Fatih): Sinan pierced the walls with so many windows that the interior reads white rather than stone. On the highest hill, a short walk from Chora.

## Best restaurants in Istanbul

Six that cover the range, from a two-star tasting menu to a Kadıköy canteen.

1. **Türk Fatih Tutak** (Modern Turkish · Two Michelin stars · Bomonti, Şişli): Fatih Tutak takes regional Anatolian dishes apart and rebuilds them across a long tasting menu. It held two stars in the 2026 Michelin Guide Türkiye. Book well ahead.
2. **Neolokal** (Anatolian · Michelin star & Green Star · Karaköy, Beyoğlu): Maksut Aşkar cooks recipes collected across the country inside SALT Galata, with the peninsula in the windows. A Michelin star and a Green Star. [Website](https://www.neolokal.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Mikla** (New Anatolian · Rooftop · Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu): Mehmet Gürs put Nordic technique behind Turkish ingredients here long before anyone named it. On the top floors of a Pera hotel. [Website](https://www.miklarestaurant.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Çiya Sofrası** (Regional Anatolian · Counter service · Caferağa, Kadıköy): Musa Dağdeviren has spent decades collecting recipes from the southeast and the menu changes daily. Point at the steam table. No reservations.
5. **Karaköy Lokantası** (Meyhane · Bib Gourmand · Karaköy, Beyoğlu): Turquoise tiles, a lunch trade of local office workers and a meze counter that is the reason to arrive hungry. A 2026 Bib Gourmand.
6. **Asitane** (Ottoman palace cuisine · Historic recipes · Edirnekapı, Fatih): The kitchen reconstructs dishes from the Topkapı and Süleymaniye palace records, some five hundred years old. Next door to Chora.

## Best hammams in Istanbul

Five historic bathhouses, four of them built by Mimar Sinan.

1. **Çemberlitaş Hamamı** (Mimar Sinan · 1584 · Çemberlitaş, Fatih): Commissioned by Nurbanu Sultan and built by Sinan, and still the easiest historic hamam to walk into without a plan. [Website](https://www.cemberlitashamami.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı** (Mimar Sinan · Restored · Tophane, Beyoğlu): Built between 1578 and 1583 for the crews of the Ottoman navy and reopened after a long restoration. One large dome, one session at a time. [Website](https://www.kilicalipasahamami.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Zeyrek Çinili Hamam** (Mimar Sinan · Museum · Zeyrek, Fatih): Thirteen years of restoration brought this one back in May 2024, with excavated tile fragments displayed in a museum under the bath.
4. **Cağaloğlu Hamamı** (Ottoman · 1741 · Cağaloğlu, Fatih): Built under Mahmud I to endow the Hagia Sophia library, and widely described as the last great hamam of the Ottoman era. Grander and busier than the others.
5. **Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı** (Mimar Sinan · 1556 · Sultanahmet, Fatih): Sinan built it for Hürrem Sultan on the site of the baths of Zeuxippus, between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. The highest prices.

## Best bazaars in Istanbul

Five places to shop that are not the Grand Bazaar.

1. **Spice Bazaar** (Food · Seventeenth century · Eminönü, Fatih): Built in the 1660s to fund the New Mosque next door, and still mostly spices, dried fruit and lokum. The lanes outside are better value than the arcade.
2. **Sahaflar Çarşısı** (Books · Courtyard · Beyazıt, Fatih): The second-hand book market between the Grand Bazaar and Beyazıt Mosque, trading on the same spot since Byzantine times. Turkish titles mostly.
3. **Arasta Bazaar** (Crafts · Small · Sultanahmet, Fatih): A single lane of shops built to fund the Blue Mosque, and a calmer place to buy a rug or ceramics than the Grand Bazaar. Small enough to walk end to end in ten minutes.
4. **Kadıköy market streets** (Food · Asian side · Caferağa, Kadıköy): The grid behind the ferry terminal is where the city actually shops: fishmongers, pickle shops, coffee roasters and a Tuesday street market. No souvenir trade at all.
5. **Çukurcuma antique shops** (Antiques · Browsing · Çukurcuma, Beyoğlu): Steep lanes below Galatasaray filled with dealers in furniture, prints and mid-century oddments. The Museum of Innocence sits among them.

## Best museums in Istanbul

Six museums that reward a slow morning.

1. **Istanbul Modern** (Modern art · Galataport · Karaköy, Beyoğlu): Turkey's first modern and contemporary art museum, since 2023 in a Renzo Piano building on the cruise terminal. The roof terrace earns the ticket. [Website](https://www.istanbulmodern.org/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Istanbul Archaeological Museums** (Antiquity · Three buildings · Gülhane, Fatih): The first museum founded in Turkey, holding around a million objects across three buildings. 3. **Pera Museum** (Orientalist painting · 1893 building · Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu): A private museum in a converted hotel, best known for the Orientalist collection and for Osman Hamdi Bey’s The Tortoise Trainer. Compact, well hung, and rarely crowded. [Website](https://www.peramuseum.org/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Sakıp Sabancı Museum** (Calligraphy · Bosphorus garden · Emirgan, Sarıyer): Ottoman calligraphy and Turkish painting in a waterside mansion up the European shore, with a garden that justifies the trip north on its own. [Website](https://www.sakipsabancimuzesi.org/en/visit?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Rahmi M. Koç Museum** (Industry & transport · Golden Horn · Hasköy, Beyoğlu): Trains, submarines, cars and machinery in a restored Ottoman foundry on the Golden Horn. The one museum that works for every age. [Website](https://www.rmk-museum.org.tr/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Museum of Innocence** (Literary · Small · Çukurcuma, Beyoğlu): Orhan Pamuk built a real museum for the objects in his own novel, cabinet by cabinet. It reads as an installation more than a collection.

## Best neighbourhoods in Istanbul

Six districts, two of them on the Asian side.

1. **Karaköy** (Nightlife · Central · Beyoğlu): The old port quarter, now the densest concentration of good coffee, small restaurants and design shops in the city. Uphill to Galata.
2. **Kadıköy and Moda** (Food · Asian side · Kadıköy): Twenty minutes by ferry and a different city: student bars, record shops, a seafront promenade and the market streets. No tourist trade.
3. **Balat and Fener** (Historic · Golden Horn · Fatih): The old Jewish and Greek quarters on the Golden Horn, steep and coloured and thoroughly photographed. The Patriarchate is here.
4. **Beşiktaş and Ortaköy** (Waterfront · Palaces · Beşiktaş): A working district with a fish market at its centre, running north along the water past Dolmabahçe to the bridge. Good ferry connections in every direction.
5. **Kuzguncuk** (Village · Asian side · Üsküdar): A single street of wooden houses, a synagogue, a church and a mosque within a hundred metres, and a market garden behind. The quietest walk on this list.
6. **Cihangir** (Residential · Views · Beyoğlu): The slope below Taksim where writers, cats and long breakfasts have settled. Steep, residential, and looking straight down the Bosphorus from most corners.

## Best day trips from Istanbul

Five trips that fit inside a single day.

1. **Princes’ Islands** (Ferry · Car-free · Sea of Marmara): Nine islands off the Asian shore, four served by ferry and all closed to private cars. Büyükada is the largest, with wooden mansions and electric shuttles.
2. **Bursa** (Ottoman capital · UNESCO · Marmara Region): The first Ottoman capital, with the Green Mosque and the silk market inscribed as a World Heritage site. Fast ferry to Mudanya, then a bus.
3. **Edirne** (Mimar Sinan · UNESCO · Thrace): Sinan considered the Selimiye Mosque his masterwork, and it is a World Heritage site in its own right. Around five hours of return driving.
4. **Şile and Ağva** (Beaches · Rivers · Black Sea coast): Two hours northeast onto the Black Sea, where Istanbul goes in summer: sand, a lighthouse, and two rivers meeting the sea at Ağva.
5. **Polonezköy** (Forest · Village · Beykoz): A village founded by Polish settlers in 1842 in the forest behind the Asian shore, still keeping the name and the cooking. An hour out.

## Istanbul travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Istanbul?

Four is the honest minimum. One day for the historic peninsula, one for Galata and Beyoğlu, one for the Bosphorus and its palaces, and one on the Asian side. A fifth buys you a day trip to the Princes’ Islands without cutting anything else short.

### Is Istanbul in Europe or Asia?

Both. The Bosphorus runs through the middle of the city, with roughly two thirds of the population living on the European side and the rest on the Asian. Crossing is routine: the ferries take about twenty minutes and Marmaray runs under the strait in four.

### When is the best time to visit Istanbul?

April and May, then September and early October. Spring brings the tulips and mild days; autumn holds the warmth without July and August humidity. Winter is cold, occasionally snowy and much quieter inside the monuments.

### What should you wear to visit the mosques?

Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and a head covering for women. Shoes come off at the door and the big mosques hand out scarves at the entrance. Visits pause around each of the five daily prayers, and Friday midday is the busiest of the week.

### What is the easiest way to get around Istanbul?

Buy an Istanbulkart at any station machine and use it on everything: the T1 tram through the old city, the metro, the funiculars, Marmaray and the ferries. Taxis exist but traffic makes them the slow option across the centre.
