# Top 10 Things To Do in Hampi

Hampi, India · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 13 min read

Hampi is the wreck of Vijayanagara, a capital founded in 1336 and sacked after the Battle of Talikota in 1565, never rebuilt. What is left stands in 4,187 hectares of granite boulders on the Tungabhadra, inscribed by UNESCO in 1986. The village at its centre holds fewer than 3,000 people.

## Quick answer

Two days covers it. Give the first morning to the Vittala temple and its stone chariot, then the royal enclosure, the Lotus Mahal and the elephant stables on one ASI ticket. Climb Matanga Hill before breakfast on day two, walk the colonnaded bazaar to Virupaksha, and cross the river by coracle to Anegundi in the afternoon. Hire a bicycle or a scooter: the monuments are spread thin.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Nov · Dec · Jan · Feb
- **Ideal length:** 2 to 3 days
- **Budget per day:** $20–55
- **Language:** Kannada, with Hindi and English used across tourism
- **Getting around:** Bicycle, scooter or auto-rickshaw. The sacred centre and the royal centre sit about 3 km apart
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://karnatakatourism.org/en/destinations/hampi?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Hampi

### 1. See the stone chariot at the Vittala temple

Temple · Vittala Temple, Hampi, Vijayanagara district 583239

The fifteenth-century Vittala complex is the high point of Vijayanagara stonework, and its Garuda shrine, cut as a chariot drawn by two elephants, is the motif on the reverse of the Indian fifty rupee note. The hall in front of it carries the tuned colonnades known as the musical pillars, now roped off from touch.

- **Time:** 1.5 hr
- **Cost:** ASI ticket, which also covers the royal enclosure group the same day
- **Best at:** Early, before the coaches arrive from Hosapete
- **Tip:** The approach road is closed to cars, so walk the last stretch or take the battery van

### 2. Walk into the Virupaksha temple, the one still in worship

Temple · Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazaar, Hampi 583239

Virupaksha is the only major temple here that never stopped functioning, which is why it smells of camphor rather than dust. Its eastern gopura towers over the bazaar street, and the shrine behind it belongs to Virupaksha and Pampa, the pair whose betrothal the village still marks every December.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Outside the ASI ticket; this is a working temple
- **Best at:** Dawn, when the morning rites begin
- **Tip:** Shoes come off at the gate, and shoulders and knees stay covered

Links: [Website](https://www.incredibleindia.gov.in/en/karnataka/hampi/virupaksha-temple?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Climb Matanga Hill for first light over the ruins

Viewpoint · Matanga Hill, east of Hampi Bazaar, Hampi 583239

Matanga is the high ground at the far end of the bazaar street, and the Veerabhadra temple on its summit is where the valley finally resolves: the Achyutaraya complex below, the river bending north, boulders to the horizon. Twenty minutes of cut steps and one short scramble.

- **Time:** 1.5 hr return
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunrise, which is also the coolest hour of the day
- **Tip:** Go up with other walkers rather than alone, and carry a torch for the steps

### 4. Cross the royal enclosure from gate to platform

Historic site · Royal Enclosure, Kamalapura road, Hampi 583239

The walled administrative heart of the capital, and the emptiest part of the site. Inside sit the Mahanavami Dibba, a three-tier platform carved with hunts and processions, the hundred stone bases of the audience hall, and a stepped tank of interlocking granite unearthed in the 1980s.

- **Time:** 1.5 hr
- **Cost:** ASI ticket, shared with the Vittala temple
- **Best at:** Late afternoon, when the platform throws shade
- **Tip:** There is no tree cover in here, so do not save it for the middle of the day

### 5. Look at the Lotus Mahal in the Zenana Enclosure

Palace · Zenana Enclosure, Kamalapura road, Hampi 583239

A two-storey pavilion whose arches and domed bays were read as a half-opened lotus bud, and the clearest Indo-Islamic design in the city. It stands in the walled women's quarter, with a watchtower at the corner and the one lawn in Hampi that is kept cut.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** ASI ticket
- **Best at:** Morning, for light on the east face
- **Tip:** The same ticket opens the elephant stables through the gate at the far end

Links: [Website](https://www.incredibleindia.gov.in/en/karnataka/hampi/lotus-mahal?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Count the domes of the elephant stables

Historic site · Elephant Stables, Zenana Enclosure, Hampi 583239

Eleven tall chambers in a row, each under a dome, built to house the royal elephants and alternating in shape along the line. The bay at the centre held the drummers. This is the one building in Hampi that came through 1565 close to intact, two minutes from the Lotus Mahal.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** ASI ticket
- **Best at:** Any hour; the arcade is shaded
- **Tip:** The long hall facing it is used as a sculpture gallery

Links: [Website](https://www.incredibleindia.gov.in/en/karnataka/hampi/elephant-stables?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Stand under the Ugra Narasimha monolith

Monolith · Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, Hemakuta road, Hampi 583239

Cut from one boulder in 1528 under Krishnadevaraya, 6.7 metres tall, seated on the coils of a seven-headed serpent. The consort who sat on its knee was broken away along with both arms, and the damage is the point. A three-metre linga stands in water in the cell next door.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning, before the tour groups
- **Tip:** The Badavilinga shrine shares the same gate, so see both in one stop

Links: [Website](https://www.incredibleindia.gov.in/en/karnataka/hampi/lakshmi-narasimha-temple?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Walk the colonnaded bazaar to the Virupaksha gopura

Street · Virupaksha Bazaar, Hampi 583239

Virupaksha Bazaar runs more than a kilometre from the foot of Matanga Hill to the temple gate, a double colonnade built for shops, pilgrims and a chariot festival. The stalls and huts that filled it were cleared in 2011, so the street reads as architecture again, gopura closing the view.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon, with the gopura lit
- **Tip:** The Nandi pavilion at the Matanga end is where the sunrise walkers gather

Links: [Website](https://www.incredibleindia.gov.in/en/karnataka/hampi/hampi-bazaar?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Cross the Tungabhadra by coracle to Anegundi

Outdoors · Chakratirtha ghat, Hampi 583239

The round basket boats have carried people over this river for centuries and still do it in minutes. On the far bank sit Anegundi, older than Hampi itself, and the steps up Anjanadri Hill. The crossing stops whenever upstream dam releases lift the water, and the road detour runs about 25 km.

- **Time:** Half a day with Anegundi
- **Cost:** Cash fare at the ghat
- **Best at:** Mid-afternoon, then stay for sunset on Anjanadri
- **Tip:** Check the river before committing to a plan that depends on the boat

### 10. Read the whole site in the museum at Kamalapura

Museum · Archaeological Museum, Kamalapura, Hampi 583239

The Archaeological Survey of India opened this museum in 1972, and its scale model of the Vijayanagara plan is the thing to see first rather than last: it shows how the sacred centre, the royal centre and the irrigation works fit together. Galleries of sculpture, hero stones and coins follow.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Paid entry at the door
- **Best at:** The hottest part of the afternoon
- **Tip:** Kamalapura is 4 km from the bazaar, so fold it in on the way out

## Hampi travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Hampi?

Two full days covers the sacred centre, the royal centre and one crossing to Anegundi. Three buys Daroji, Sanapur Lake or a morning on the boulders. Day trippers from Hosapete see the chariot and the gopura and miss the part that makes the journey worth it.

### When is the best time to visit Hampi?

November to February. The ruins carry almost no shade and summer highs on this plateau run past 40C, which makes April and May punishing. The monsoon cools it but lifts the river, and that can shut the coracle crossing for days at a time.

### How do you get to Hampi?

Hosapete Junction, 13 km away, is the railhead, with overnight trains from Bengaluru, Hubballi and Hyderabad. Hubballi (HBX) is the nearest useful airport at about 145 km. Buses run from Hosapete to Kamalapura and the bazaar through the day.

### Do you need a ticket for the monuments in Hampi?

One Archaeological Survey of India ticket covers the Vittala temple and the royal enclosure group, the Lotus Mahal and the elephant stables included, on the same day. Most of the rest, Virupaksha among it, is free to walk into. The museum charges separately.

### Should you stay in Hampi Bazaar or on Hippie Island?

Hampi Bazaar puts you inside the monuments and next to the temple, which is what most people want. Virupapur Gaddi across the river is quieter and cheaper, with the catch that you depend on the boat: when the water is high, getting back is a 25 km road trip.
