# Top 10 Things To Do in Gondar

Gondar, Ethiopia · Africa · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Gondar was Ethiopia's capital for two centuries, and the emperors who ruled from it left a walled compound of stone castles standing in the middle of the modern city. The Simien escarpment begins two hours north, which is why most visitors pass through here twice.

## Quick answer

Give Gondar two days. One covers Fasil Ghebbi, the walled compound where six emperors built castles from 1636 onward, then Fasilides Bath below it and the painted ceiling at Debre Berhan Selassie on the ridge northeast of town. The second takes Kuskuam, Ras Gimb and the Kidame Gebeya market, or runs north to Wolleka and the Kossoye escarpment. One ticket covers the enclosure and the bath.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Oct · Nov · Dec · Jan
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $40–95
- **Language:** Amharic, with English common in tourism
- **Getting around:** On foot in the centre, bajaj beyond it
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://visitethiopia.et/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Gondar

### 1. Fasil Ghebbi

UNESCO World Heritage Site · Fasil Ghebbi, central Gondar, Amhara Region

Six emperors built inside one wall, so the compound reads as a chronology: Fasilides' square keep of 1636, then Iyasu's palace, Dawit's hall, Mentewab's castle. Nubian, Arab and Baroque lines worked into the same local stone.

- **Time:** 2–3 hr
- **Cost:** One ticket, bought at the gate
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** The same ticket admits you to Fasilides Bath across town, so keep the stub

Links: [UNESCO](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/19/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 2. Debre Berhan Selassie

Church · Northeast of the centre, above Gondar

The ceiling is the reason to come: a grid of winged angel faces looking down over walls painted end to end with biblical scenes. Twelve stone towers ring the compound, one for each apostle. Its own ticket, not the enclosure's.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Separate church ticket
- **Best at:** Mid-morning
- **Tip:** Shoes come off at the door, and the ceiling reads best from the west end

Links: [UNESCO](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/19/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Fasilides Bath

Royal bath · Northwest of the centre, Gondar

A stone pavilion standing in an empty rectangular pool, its wall gripped by fig roots. It is filled once a year for Timket, when the crowd goes into the water with it, and the rest of the year you have the trees.

- **Time:** 30–45 min
- **Cost:** Included in the Fasil Ghebbi ticket
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Come on 19 January and this is the largest Timket in the country, not a quiet monument

Links: [UNESCO](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/19/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 4. Simien Mountains National Park

National park · Park headquarters at Debark, about 100 km north of Gondar

An escarpment that falls more than a kilometre in one step, with gelada troops feeding along the rim and walia ibex on the cliffs below. Gondar is the gateway: permits and a scout are arranged at the Debark headquarters.

- **Time:** Full day minimum
- **Cost:** Park permit plus a mandatory scout
- **Best at:** October to March
- **Tip:** A long day reaches Buyit Ras and the first viewpoints; past Sankaber you need a night

Links: [UNESCO](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/9/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Kuskuam

Palace ruins · Debre Tsehay hill, northwest of central Gondar

Empress Mentewab built this hillside retreat in the 1730s after Emperor Bakaffa died: a palace, a banqueting hall and Qusquam Mariam church, where she is buried. A one-room museum beside it holds royal remains and a few objects.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Site ticket
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Take a bajaj up and walk back down; the climb out of town is the hard part

Links: [UNESCO](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/19/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Ras Gimb Palace Museum

Museum · Central Gondar, near the Royal Enclosure

A compact stone palace, dated by some to the 17th century and by others to the 18th, now Gondar's museum. It is the one place in the city that carries the story past the emperors and into the twentieth century.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Museum ticket
- **Best at:** Any time
- **Tip:** Small enough to pair with the enclosure in one morning; they are a few minutes apart

### 7. Wolleka

Village · Wolleka, about 6 km north of Gondar on the Debark road

The Beta Israel community that lived here was airlifted to Israel in the 1980s and 1990s. What is left is an empty synagogue with a Star of David on its roof, and stalls selling the black clay figures the village became known for.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free, tip the caretaker
- **Best at:** On the way north
- **Tip:** Fold it into the drive to Debark rather than making a separate trip for it

### 8. Kossoye escarpment

Viewpoint · Kossoye, about 40 km north of Gondar on the Debark road

The place the highland plateau simply stops: juniper on the rim, a long drop into haze, and the Simien range lined up to the north. The last easy stop before Debark, and a preview of what the park does at scale.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Combine it with Wolleka on the same run north; both sit on the Debark road

### 9. Goha Hill viewpoint

Viewpoint · Goha Hill, above the northern edge of Gondar

The whole city laid out from above, with the Royal Enclosure walls in the middle of it and Debre Berhan Selassie on its own ridge. A bajaj gets you up in ten minutes; walking takes closer to forty.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** The hotel terrace at the top serves coffee if you would rather sit with the view

### 10. Kidame Gebeya

Market · Kidame Gebeya, central Gondar

The city market trades every day and fills on Saturday, which is what its name means. Coffee by the sack, clay jebena pots, cones of berbere and shiro, and the woven cotton the highlands still make.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Saturday morning
- **Tip:** Bring small birr notes; nothing here is priced in advance and nothing takes a card

3. **Wolleka craft stalls** (Free · 6 km north · Wolleka): Black clay figures and pottery outside the empty Beta Israel synagogue.

## Simien treks that start from Gondar

The classic escarpment route, stage by stage. All of it is booked in Debark.

6. **Bwahit pass** (4,430 m · Day 4 · Simien): A 4,430 m climb out of Chenek, and the turnaround for anyone skipping Ras Dashen.

## Day trips from Gondar

Five runs out of the city, four of them on the road north or the lake road south.

- **Dulet**: Minced tripe, liver and lean beef fried hard with butter and spice. Traditionally breakfast.
- **Tej**: Honey wine fermented with gesho and poured from a berele flask. Light to fierce, and cheap.

## Gondar transport & airports

- **Gondar Atse Tewodros Airport** (GDQ): The practical way in. Ethiopian Airlines is the only carrier and flies from Addis Ababa in about an hour. The terminal sits south of the city at Azezo. [Ethiopian Airlines](https://www.ethiopianairlines.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **Long-distance buses** (Arada): Selam Bus and Sky Bus run the comfortable services to Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar from the terminal in Arada, in the centre of town. Bahir Dar takes about three hours.
- **Minibuses to Debark** (Simien): Minibuses for Debark and the Simien park headquarters leave Arada through the day. They go when full rather than to a timetable, so start early.
- **Bajaj** (In town): Three-wheelers are how Gondar moves, shared along fixed routes or hired whole. Nothing is metered, so agree the fare before you get in.

## Gondar travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Gondar?

Two full days. One covers Fasil Ghebbi, Fasilides Bath and Debre Berhan Selassie, which are the three things people come for. The second takes Kuskuam, Ras Gimb and the market, or runs north to Wolleka and Kossoye. Trekking the Simiens is nights on top of that.

### Is Gondar the right base for the Simien Mountains?

Yes. Permits, scouts and guides are issued at the park headquarters in Debark, about 100 km and three hours north, and Gondar is the nearest city with an airport and a full range of hotels. Minibuses to Debark leave Arada bus station through the day.

### When is Timket in Gondar?

Timket falls on 19 January, and on the 20th in a leap year. Gondar holds the largest celebration of it in Ethiopia, at Fasilides Bath, which is filled with water for the occasion. Book beds months ahead, because the city fills.

### What does a day in Gondar cost?

About $40 a day covers a simple hotel, local restaurants and bajaj fares. Around $95 buys a mid-range hotel, a guide for the enclosure and a hired car for a run north. Carry birr in cash: cards work only at the larger hotels.

### What is the best time of year to visit Gondar?

October to March, the dry season, when days sit around 18 to 25°C under clear skies. The main rains run June to September, when highland roads get difficult, though the Jinbar waterfall in the Simiens is at its strongest then.
