# Top 10 Things To Do in Évora

Évora, Portugal · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 13 min read

Évora is the walled capital of the Alentejo, on UNESCO's list since 1986, and small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. A Roman temple, a Gothic cathedral and a chapel lined with bones sit within a few streets of each other. Cork plains and wine estates start at the walls.

## Quick answer

Climb the cathedral roof first, on the €5 ticket that also covers the cloister and museum, then walk past the Roman temple to the Capela dos Ossos at São Francisco. Spend the afternoon on Rua 5 de Outubro and under the aqueduct arches on Rua do Cano, and eat Alentejo pork in a small tasca. Day two goes out to the Almendres stone circle and a Cartuxa tasting.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Apr · May · Sep · Oct
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** $90–160
- **Language:** Portuguese
- **Getting around:** Walking; train or coach from Lisbon

## Évora travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Évora?

Two. The first covers the walled centre: the cathedral roof, the Roman temple, the Capela dos Ossos and Rua do Cano under the aqueduct. The second goes out to the Almendres stone circle and a winery, or on to Monsaraz.

### Is Évora a good day trip from Lisbon?

It works as one, at about 1h30 each way by Intercidades train or express coach. A night is better: the centre empties after the coach groups leave, and the temple and squares are at their best after dark.

### How much is the Capela dos Ossos?

The São Francisco ticket is €7 for adults, €5 for under-25s and over-65s, and €15 for a family. It covers the bone chapel, the museum and the terrace. Entry to the church itself is free.

### When is the best time to visit Évora?

April to June and September to October. July and August average highs above 30°C on the plain, which makes the megaliths and wineries hard work. Late June brings the Feira de São João and the city holiday on the 29th.

### Do you need a car in Évora?

Not in town: the centre is walled, compact and best on foot, and driving inside the walls is restricted. You do need one, or a tour, for the Almendres stone circle, the wineries and the hill villages.
