# Top 10 Things To Do in Dushanbe

Dushanbe, Tajikistan · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Dushanbe is a Soviet-planned capital under snow-capped mountains, laid out along one grand avenue and walkable in an afternoon. It is also where the Pamir Highway is organised, so most travellers arrive to sort permits and a driver, then stay longer than they meant to.

## Quick answer

Give Dushanbe two days. Day one is Rudaki Avenue: the National Museum of Tajikistan, the 13 metre Sleeping Buddha at the Museum of Antiquities, lunch upstairs at Rohat teahouse, then the flagpole and the park at dusk. Day two goes out of town, to Hissar Fortress 35 km west or up the Varzob gorge. Sort Pamir permits before you leave.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Apr · May · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $35–80
- **Language:** Tajik

## The 10 best things to do in Dushanbe

### 1. Start at the National Museum of Tajikistan

Museum · Ismoil Somoni Avenue 11, Dusti Square

Twenty-two halls run from Bronze Age finds through the Samanid centuries to modern Tajik painting, and the building itself, opened on Dusti Square in 2013, says plenty about how the state reads its own past. Tickets are 50 somoni. It closes on Mondays, so plan around that.

- **Time:** 2–3 hrs
- **Cost:** 50 TJS
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays

### 2. Stand over the Sleeping Buddha

Museum · 5 Akademikon Rajabovykh St, off Rudaki Avenue

A 13 metre reclining Buddha, excavated at the Ajina Teppa monastery near Bokhtar between 1964 and 1968 and rebuilt from 43 pieces by Hermitage restorers. It is the largest Buddha in Central Asia. The Sogdian and Kushan rooms around it are worth another hour.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** 50 TJS
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Guides are free

### 3. Walk Rudaki Park to the flagpole

Landmark · Rudaki Avenue at Dusti Square

The city's formal heart: fountains, mature shade trees, the 25 metre bronze of Ismoil Somoni under a golden arch, and the 165 metre flagpole in front of the Palace of Nations. It was the tallest on earth from 2011 until Jeddah passed it in 2014. Come back after dark for the lights.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Dusk
- **Tip:** Best light after sunset

### 4. Take lunch upstairs at Rohat Teahouse

Teahouse · Rudaki Avenue, just north of Rudaki Park

Built in 1958 and raised on columns above the avenue, with painted ceilings, carved plaster and chandeliers over two floors. CNN named it one of the world’s best teahouses in 2017. Order shirchoy and osh, take the upper gallery, and watch Rudaki move below you.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** 20–40 TJS
- **Best at:** Lunch
- **Tip:** Sit on the upper gallery

### 5. Shop the counters at Mehrgon Bazaar

Market · 4 Mehnat St, Somoni district

Three storeys and 10,000 square metres of Silk Road pastiche, opened in 2014 to replace the older Barakat and Green bazaars. The ground floor is the reason to come: Isfara apricots, mountain honey, walls of spice and hard white balls of qurut. Expect to be handed a taste.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Carry small notes

### 6. See how far Kokhi Navruz went

Landmark · Ismoil Somoni Avenue 14/2

Planned as the largest teahouse in the world and finished in 2014 as a five-floor palace, roughly 40,000 square metres of carved wood, mirror mosaic and painted plaster by Tajik craftsmen. The grounds are free. Going inside costs 70 somoni and takes about an hour.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** 70 TJS inside
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Ask at the desk for a tour

### 7. Hear a rubob at the Gurminj Museum

Museum · 23 Bokhtar St

Two crowded rooms holding the private collection of the folk musician Gurminj Zavkibekov (1929 to 2003), open to the public since 1990: Pamiri rubobs, dutars, frame drums and the clothes that went with them. Concerts are informal, often around 5pm on a summer Saturday.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** ~30 TJS
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Ask about live sets

### 8. Cross the plain to Hissar Fortress

Day trip · Hisor, 35 km west of Dushanbe

The rebuilt gate of a fortress on an old Silk Road crossing, with two madrasas and a caravanserai museum below the ridge. It is 35 km west, about half an hour by road, and a marshrutka from the western stand costs a few somoni. Half a day, including the drive.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Marshrutka ~5 TJS
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Go before the midday heat

### 9. Climb to Victory Park for the view

Park · Victory Park, on the ridge above the centre

A war memorial opened in 1975 for the thirtieth anniversary of victory, on the ridge that closes the city to the south. The view back over the grid to the mountains is the best in Dushanbe. The 1970s cable car no longer runs, so take a taxi up and walk down.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Taxi up, walk down

### 10. Take a seat at the Ayni Opera and Ballet

Theatre · Rudaki Avenue 28

Stalinist classicism from 1946, named for the writer Sadriddin Ayni, and still the main stage in the country for opera, ballet and orchestral nights. Seats cost very little by any European standard. The board outside the box office is the reliable listing.

- **Time:** 2–3 hrs
- **Cost:** Cheap seats
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** Buy at the box office

## Dushanbe travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Dushanbe?

Two. One for Rudaki Avenue, the two big museums and a long lunch at Rohat, one for Hissar Fortress or the Varzob gorge. Add a third if you are waiting on Pamir permits or a driver, which is why most travellers are in town at all.

### Do I need a visa for Tajikistan?

Most nationalities apply online at evisa.tj. Single entry costs $30 and multiple entry $50. The visa is valid for 90 days with a maximum stay of 60. Add the GBAO permit for $20 if the Pamirs are on the plan, or get it later at the OVIR office in Dushanbe.

### When is the best time to visit Dushanbe?

April to early June, then September to late October. Summer in the Hisor valley is hot and dry, with July highs around 35°C, and winters are mild but grey. Navruz, around the spring equinox, is the city at its liveliest.

### Is Dushanbe expensive?

No. Budget travellers get by on about $35 a day, and $80 covers a comfortable hotel, taxis and restaurant meals. A trolleybus ride is 2.5 somoni, a city taxi rarely tops 30, and the two national museums charge 50 each.

### How do you reach the Pamir Highway from Dushanbe?

The highway is organised from here. GBAO permits, drivers and shared 4x4 seats to Khorog all start in the capital. Take the permit with your e-visa or collect it at the OVIR office, then find a seat at the eastbound taxi stand and leave early.
