# Top 10 Things To Do in Dunedin

Dunedin, New Zealand · Oceania · By Wimup Editorial, 15 min read

Dunedin makes a virtue of not being tropical. The weather comes off the Southern Ocean, the light is low and long, and the wildlife that draws people here (albatross, yellow-eyed penguins, sea lions asleep on public beaches) likes cold water. Add a student city of 130,000 with a brewing habit and a warehouse district full of murals.

## Quick answer

Give Dunedin three days. Two belong to the Otago Peninsula, a 30 km finger of farmland and cliff that ends at Taiaroa Head, the only place on any mainland where royal albatross breed. The third stays in town, where a Scottish settlement of 1848 spent its gold-rush money on stone: a railway station like a wedding cake, two free museums and an Edwardian merchant house. Bring a car.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Dec · Jan · Feb · Mar
- **Ideal length:** 3–4 days
- **Budget per day:** NZ$180–320
- **Language:** English
- **Getting around:** Walking, buses & a hire car
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.dunedinnz.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Dunedin

### 1. Watch royal albatross at Taiaroa Head

Wildlife · Royal Albatross Centre, 1260 Harington Point Road, Otago Peninsula

Taiaroa Head is the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross in the world, and the birds are visible only from a glassed observatory on a guided tour, because the headland is a reserve. The one-hour tour covers the colony; the 90-minute version adds Fort Taiaroa. Wind is the point rather than the problem: a blowy afternoon is the better booking.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Guided tour
- **Best at:** Windy afternoons
- **Tip:** Book the tour slot

### 2. Stand in the Dunedin Railway Station booking hall

Landmark · 22 Anzac Avenue, Dunedin Central

George Troup designed this in Flemish Renaissance style and opened it in 1906, which earned him the nickname Gingerbread George and gave Dunedin a station far grander than its traffic ever justified. The booking hall floor is a mosaic of roughly 750,000 Minton tiles. Entry costs nothing, and on a Saturday morning the northern carpark is a farmers market.

- **Time:** 30–45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Saturday morning
- **Tip:** Look down, then up

### 3. Work through Toitū Otago Settlers Museum

Museum · 31 Queens Gardens, Dunedin Central

The best single explanation of why this city looks the way it does. Toitū runs from Kāi Tahu occupation through the Free Church settlement of 1848 and the Otago gold rush that funded the stone, and it does it with objects and faces rather than panels of text. Admission is free, special exhibitions aside. Two hours is the honest minimum.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Any weekday
- **Tip:** Start with the portrait gallery

Links: [Website](https://www.toituosm.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 4. Tour Larnach Castle and its gardens

Historic house · 145 Camp Road, Otago Peninsula

New Zealand has exactly one castle and this is it, built from 1871 by the banker and politician William Larnach and rescued from ruin by the Barker family from 1967. The house is worth the ticket for the ceilings alone, but the gardens hold the view: the whole harbour, both sides, from a ridge halfway down the peninsula. It opens every day of the year.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Clear middays
- **Tip:** Climb the tower for the harbour view

Links: [Website](https://www.larnachcastle.co.nz/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Walk down through the sandstone at Tunnel Beach

Coast · Tunnel Beach Track, off Blackhead Road, Blackhead

A short, steep track drops from farmland down a headland of carved sandstone to a hand-cut tunnel, commissioned in the 1870s so the Cargill family could reach their own beach. Seventy-two steps in the dark, then a small cove with an arch. The walk back up is the workout. The track crosses farmland and closes for lambing from August into November.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Low tide
- **Tip:** Check the DOC page for closures

### 6. Spend a morning inside Orokonui Ecosanctuary

Wildlife · 600 Blueskin Road, Waitati

A predator-proof fence rings 307 hectares of regenerating forest north of the city, and inside it the birdsong is what the mainland sounded like before rats and stoats. Takahē, kākā, tuatara and South Island robins are all resident. It opens Thursday to Monday and closes Tuesday and Wednesday, which catches out more visitors than any other detail in this guide.

- **Time:** 2–3 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Closed Tuesday and Wednesday

Links: [Website](https://orokonui.nz/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Climb Baldwin Street, the steepest in the world

Landmark · Baldwin Street, North East Valley

A 350-metre residential street in North East Valley with a gradient of 34.8 percent at its worst, measured along the centre line. Guinness handed the title to a Welsh street in 2019 and gave it back in 2020 after a Dunedin surveyor challenged the method. Walking up takes ten minutes and is genuinely hard. People live here, so keep to the footpath.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Park at the bottom, walk up

### 8. See the Pacific gallery at Tūhura Otago Museum

Museum · 419 Great King Street, North Dunedin

The natural history and Pacific cultures collections are the reason to come, and the galleries are free. Upstairs, the ticketed Tūhura Science Centre includes a tropical butterfly house, which is a startling thing to walk into in a city this cold. Open daily 10am to 5pm, closed Christmas Day.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Galleries free
- **Best at:** Rainy days
- **Tip:** Science centre is ticketed

Links: [Website](https://otagomuseum.nz/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Take the guided tour of Olveston

Historic house · 42 Royal Terrace, Roslyn

A 35-room Edwardian merchant house completed in 1906 for the Theomin family and handed to the city in 1966 with its contents intact, down to the kitchen equipment and the art on the walls. Entry is by guided tour only, six a day, an hour each. The garden and shop are free to wander if you only want the exterior.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Tour ticket
- **Best at:** Booked tour slots
- **Tip:** Six tours daily, reserve ahead

Links: [Website](https://www.olveston.co.nz/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Shop the Otago Farmers Market at the station

Market · Northern carpark, Dunedin Railway Station, 22 Anzac Avenue

Every Saturday from 8am to 12.30pm, in the shadow of the railway station, rain or otherwise. Up to 65 stallholders at peak season, all of them from the region: Otago stone fruit in summer, blue cod, cheese, venison, and the cheese rolls that are the local answer to a bacon sandwich. It is the best hour of eating in the city and it is over by lunchtime.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free entry
- **Best at:** Saturday from 8am
- **Tip:** Bring a bag and cash

- **Dunedin Railway Station** (Rail): No scheduled long-distance passenger trains, but the 1906 station is the departure point for the Taieri Gorge and the coastal Seasider services run by Dunedin Railways. [Website](https://dunedinrailways.co.nz/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **Car hire and taxis** (Road): The centre walks in twenty minutes end to end, but the Otago Peninsula has one narrow harbourside road and a thin bus service. Hire a car for at least one day, or book a peninsula tour instead.

## Dunedin travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Dunedin?

Three, or four if you want a day trip. Budget two of them for the Otago Peninsula, which takes longer than the map suggests because the harbourside road is narrow and slow, and one for the centre, where the museums, the railway station and the Warehouse Precinct sit within a twenty-minute walk of each other.

### Do you need a car in Dunedin?

For the city, no. The centre is compact and Orbus covers the suburbs. For the Otago Peninsula, effectively yes: the wildlife sites are spread over 30 km with a thin bus service, so hire a car for at least a day or book a peninsula tour that collects you from town.

### Can you see penguins in Dunedin?

Yes, two species. Yellow-eyed penguins come ashore late in the afternoon and are best seen from the hides at The OPERA reserve or the platform at Sandfly Bay. Little penguins arrive at dusk at Taiaroa Head, where Blue Penguins Pukekura runs an evening viewing. Both are protected: keep well back and never stand between a bird and the sea.

### When is the best time to visit Dunedin?

December to March. Days are long, the sea is swimmable if you are hardy, and the royal albatross chicks are on the nest at Taiaroa Head. Winter is not a write-off: the Midwinter Carnival in June and the Puaka Matariki festival are among the best things the city does, and there are no queues anywhere.

### Is Dunedin walkable?

The centre is. From the Octagon you can reach the railway station, Toitū, the art gallery and the Warehouse Precinct on foot in under fifteen minutes each. Beyond that the city climbs hard, as Baldwin Street demonstrates, so anything in the hill suburbs or out on the peninsula wants a bus or a car.
