# Top 10 Things To Do in Dingle

Dingle, Ireland · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Dingle is the only town on the Dingle Peninsula, Corca Dhuibhne in Irish, 50 km west of Tralee in the Kerry Gaeltacht. It is a fishing harbour with a pub on every corner, and the base for Slea Head, the Blasket Islands and the early Christian sites of the west.

## Quick answer

Give Dingle three days. Drive the Slea Head loop clockwise on the first, stopping at Dunbeg Fort, Coumeenoole and the Blasket Centre, and take the ferry from Dunquin Pier to the Great Blasket if the sea allows. On the second, see Gallarus Oratory and Kilmalkedar, then cross the Conor Pass. Keep the third for the distillery, Inch beach or Mount Brandon, and every evening for a trad session in town.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** €110–190
- **Language:** Irish and English
- **Getting around:** The town on foot, a car or bike for Slea Head, Bus Éireann 275 to Tralee

## The 10 best things to do in Dingle

### 1. Drive the Slea Head loop

Scenic drive · Slea Head Drive (R559), from Dingle via Ventry

The western tip of the peninsula in one loop from town: Ventry, Dunbeg Fort, the beehive huts, Slea Head, Coumeenoole and the view over the Blaskets from Dunquin. Drive it clockwise, as the local one-way advice asks, so you never meet a tour bus head-on.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** A clear morning
- **Tip:** Go clockwise through Ventry; the road is narrow and buses use it

### 2. See Gallarus Oratory, a church of dry stone

Early Christian site · Gallarus, Ballydavid, Co. Kerry

An early Christian oratory shaped like an upturned boat, built of unmortared stone above Smerwick Harbour. It is one of the only churches of its type to survive intact.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Oratory free, visitor centre fee
- **Best at:** Early or late, between tour buses
- **Tip:** The fee at the booth is for the visitor centre and car park; the oratory itself is free

Links: [Website](https://www.gallarusoratory.ie/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Cross to the Great Blasket from Dunquin

Island · Dunquin Pier, Dún Chaoin, Co. Kerry

The island was abandoned in 1953, and its ruined village faces the mainland across a sound about 5 km wide. Seasonal ferries cross from Dunquin Pier in about 20 minutes, weather permitting, and land you for a walk over the ridge.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Ferry ticketed
- **Best at:** Calm days in summer
- **Tip:** Every sailing depends on the swell; have a second day in hand

### 4. Read the islanders' story at the Blasket Centre

Museum · Dún Chaoin, Co. Kerry

The state's museum of the Blasket islanders and the books they wrote, set on the cliff opposite the island. The exhibitions were renewed in 2022 and a clifftop viewing platform opened in 2020.

- **Time:** 1.5 hrs
- **Cost:** Adult €5, under-12s free
- **Best at:** Season runs 6 March to 8 November 2026
- **Tip:** Book online and see it before the ferry, not after

### 5. Cross the Conor Pass

Mountain road · R560, Dingle to Castlegregory

The road north out of Dingle climbs to 456 m between Binn Dubh and Slievanea, with lakes below and Brandon Bay ahead. Stop at the car park at the top for the view both ways.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Clear weather; cloud hides it all
- **Tip:** Single-lane in places: pull in to let oncoming cars pass

### 6. Find the alphabet stone at Kilmalkedar

Early Christian site · Cill Mhaoilchéadair, near Ballydavid, Co. Kerry

A 12th-century Romanesque church on a monastery founded by Saint Maolcethair, who died in 636. Inside is an alphabet stone of about 550; outside, an ogham stone with a hole through its top and a rare early sundial.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Combined with Gallarus, a short drive away
- **Tip:** Find the ogham stone in the graveyard, where oaths were once sworn through its hole

### 7. Tour the Dingle Distillery

Distillery · Milltown, Dingle

Whiskey, gin and vodka made in a converted sawmill at the edge of town since 2012. The standard tour runs 75 minutes and ends with a tasting; a longer whiskey-focused tour is the one for collectors.

- **Time:** 75 min
- **Cost:** From €25, over-18s
- **Best at:** Book ahead in summer
- **Tip:** Bring photo ID; production may be paused on some days

Links: [Website](https://dingledistillery.ie/visit-tours/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Walk the 5 km of Inch beach

Beach · Inch, Annascaul, Co. Kerry

A 5 km spit of sand reaching into Dingle Bay, a Blue Flag beach with summer lifeguards and a Special Area of Conservation. It appears in Ryan's Daughter and Far and Away, and surfers use it year round.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Low tide, late afternoon
- **Tip:** Stop on the way in from Tralee or Killarney, on the road east of town

### 9. See the Harry Clarke windows at An Díseart

Chapel · Green Street, Dingle

The former Presentation convent chapel holds six two-light windows from Harry Clarke's studio, commissioned in 1922, each a scene from the life of Christ.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Small entry fee
- **Best at:** A wet afternoon
- **Tip:** Pair it with Dick Mack's, a few doors down Green Street

Links: [Website](https://diseart.ie/harry-clarke-windows/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Climb Mount Brandon on the Saint's Road

Hike · Mount Brandon, Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry

At 952 m, one of Ireland's ten highest peaks and the end of Cosán na Naomh, a pilgrim path from Ventry. The western Saint's Road ascent is the easiest, about 8 km return in 3 to 4 hours.

- **Time:** 4 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** A settled dry day
- **Tip:** Cloud closes in fast on the summit; carry a map and turn back if it does

## Dingle travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Dingle?

Three. One for the Slea Head loop and the Blasket Centre, one for Gallarus, Kilmalkedar and the Conor Pass, and one for the Great Blasket ferry, Inch or Mount Brandon. Keep the ferry day flexible, because sailings depend on the swell.

### Which way should you drive Slea Head?

Clockwise, out through Ventry and back through Ballyferriter. The local tourism body asks visitors to treat it as one-way in that direction, so you do not meet coaches on the narrow sections. Allow at least half a day with stops.

### Is Fungie the dolphin still in Dingle?

No. Fungie lived in the harbour from 1983 and was last seen in October 2020. Boats still take visitors out to the Blaskets for whales, dolphins and seabirds, and his bronze statue stands on the waterfront.

### Can you visit Dingle without a car?

Yes. Take the train to Tralee and Bus Éireann route 275 on, about an hour. The town is walkable, and boat trips leave from the marina, but for Slea Head and Gallarus you need a bike, a tour or a taxi.

### Do people speak Irish in Dingle?

Dingle is in the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht, so Irish is spoken in homes and shops and comes first on the road signs, which name the town An Daingean. Everyone also speaks English.
