# Top 10 Things To Do in Dinant

Dinant, Belgium · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 11 min read

Dinant is a one-street town squeezed between the Meuse and a limestone cliff, with the citadel on top and the onion-domed Collégiale at its foot. It gave the world the saxophone and Leffe beer, and the Lesse, Belgium's best kayak river, joins the Meuse just upstream.

## Quick answer

Give Dinant a full day. Climb the 408 steps to the citadel in the morning, come down to the Collégiale, Adolphe Sax's house and the saxophone bridge, then take the 45-minute boat to Anseremme and back past the Bayard rock. On a second day, paddle the Lesse past Walzin castle, or drive to Château de Vêves and the Bouvignes ruins.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 1 day, 2 with the Lesse and the castles
- **Budget per day:** €90–150
- **Language:** French
- **Getting around:** The centre on foot, then TEC buses, boats and kayaks
- **Tourism board:** [↗ Website](https://www.exploremeuse.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Dinant

### 1. Climb to the Citadel of Dinant

Landmark · Above Place Reine Astrid, Dinant

The fortress on the cliff dates mostly from the Dutch rebuild of 1818 to 1821, on a site fortified since 1051, and its terrace is the view of Dinant. The cable car is shut until a replacement is built, so walk the 408 steps beside the Collégiale.

- **Time:** 1.5 to 2 hours
- **Cost:** €15 adult, €13 child (4 to 12)
- **Best at:** Morning, before the boats fill
- **Tip:** The cable car has been closed since October 2025; the steps start behind the Collégiale

### 2. Step inside the Collégiale Notre-Dame

Landmark · Place Reine Astrid, Dinant

The Gothic church that replaced a Romanesque one after the rock fell on it in 1228, rebuilt again after the German shelling of 1914. Its bulb spire is the town's signature, and the great window is among the largest in Europe.

- **Time:** 30 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late morning, when the sun is on the glass
- **Tip:** Pair it with the citadel steps, which start right behind it

### 3. Kayak the Lesse past Walzin castle

Outdoors · Anseremme, where the Lesse meets the Meuse

The Lesse runs through a wooded gorge to the Meuse, and the 21 km descent from Houyet passes under the cliff of Walzin castle, which you cannot visit any other way. A shuttle takes you upstream and you paddle back to Anseremme.

- **Time:** About 5 hours (21 km), 2.5 hours (12 km)
- **Cost:** From €27.50 per person
- **Best at:** Weekdays, June and September
- **Tip:** Book on summer weekends; the two small dams are passable for beginners

### 4. Visit the Maison de Monsieur Sax

Museum · Rue Adolphe Sax 37, Dinant

An interpretation centre on the site of the house where Adolphe Sax was born in 1814, with the saxophone's story told in sound. Twenty minutes is enough, and it costs nothing.

- **Time:** 20 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Any time, before the bridge
- **Tip:** Walk on to the Charles de Gaulle bridge, lined with giant saxophones

### 5. See the Bayard rock

Free · Rue du Rocher Bayard, Dinant

A 35 m needle of limestone split from the cliff, which legend says the horse Bayard kicked apart while carrying the four Aymon brothers from Charlemagne. Louis XIV's army cut the road through in the 1690s.

- **Time:** 15 minutes
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Afternoon light
- **Tip:** Walk south along the river from the centre; it is about 1 km

### 6. Walk Bouvignes and the Crèvecœur ruins

Landmark · Place du Bailliage 16, Bouvignes

Dinant's medieval rival on the left bank, with a Spanish-era brick house that now holds the Maison du patrimoine médiéval mosan. Climb to the Crèvecœur ruins above it for the widest view of the valley.

- **Time:** 2 hours
- **Cost:** Ruins free; museum ticketed
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** It is about 2 km north of the centre along the left bank

Links: [MPMM](https://mpmm.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Take the boat to Anseremme

Landmark · The quay in central Dinant

The 45-minute return cruise is the best way to see the citadel, the Collégiale and the Bayard rock in one line. The two-hour trip goes on to the Freÿr rocks and castle.

- **Time:** 45 minutes, or 2 hours to Freÿr
- **Cost:** Ticketed; combined deals with the citadel
- **Best at:** Hourly sailings, 11:30 to 16:30 in season
- **Tip:** Operating days change by month, so check the timetable before you go

### 8. Taste at the Maison Leffe

Food · Charreau des Capucins 23, Dinant

The story of the abbey that gave Leffe its name, told in a former convent on the left bank, with a tasting at the end. The beer itself is brewed in Leuven now, so come for the history and the glass.

- **Time:** About 1 hour
- **Cost:** Ticketed, tasting included
- **Best at:** Afternoon
- **Tip:** Hours change by season and the off-season is weekends only, so check first

Links: [Explore Meuse](https://www.exploremeuse.be/en/details/ALD-1E-000WTI&type=11?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Go underground at La Merveilleuse

Family · Rue de Philippeville 142, Dinant

A cave found by road and rail workers in 1904, kept as it was, with unusually white stalactites. The guided tour runs about 50 minutes over 650 m and more than 120 steps.

- **Time:** 50 minutes
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** A hot or wet day
- **Tip:** Wear grippy shoes and bring a layer; the floor is damp and the air is cool

### 10. Tour Château de Vêves

Landmark · Rue de Furfooz 3, Celles

A fairy-tale fortress of pepper-pot towers on a spur above Celles, largely from about 1410 and still owned by the Liedekerke-Beaufort family. It is furnished, lived-in and open without booking.

- **Time:** 45 minutes to 1 hour
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday mornings
- **Tip:** It is about 10 km east of Dinant; pair it with the Furfooz reserve next door

## Dinant travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Dinant?

One full day covers the citadel, the Collégiale, the Sax house and a boat to Anseremme. Add a second for a kayak down the Lesse past Walzin, or for Château de Vêves and the Bouvignes ruins.

### How do you get from Brussels to Dinant?

By train. Direct SNCB trains leave Brussels-Luxembourg hourly and take about 1 hour 25 minutes. The station is on the left bank, a short walk over the bridge to the Collégiale.

### Is the Dinant cable car working?

No. It closed in October 2025 and is being replaced, with no reopening date set. The citadel stays open: climb the 408 steps behind the Collégiale or drive to the car park at the top.

### Can you kayak the Lesse without booking?

Usually, but book for summer weekends, when Dinant Évasion cannot guarantee boats to walk-ups. The 21 km run from Houyet takes about five hours; the 12 km from Gendron about two and a half.

### What should you eat in Dinant?

A flamiche, the hot cheese tart, and a couque, the hard honey biscuit, from Maison Jacobs or Collard on Rue Grande. For dinner, La Broche and Le Confessionnal both hold Michelin Bib Gourmands.
