# Top 10 Things To Do in Dili

Dili, Timor-Leste · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 11 min read

Dili is a low, spread-out capital strung along a bay, with mountains behind it and a deep-water strait in front. It became independent in 2002, and the city still reads as a place working out what comes next: the resistance history is the museum, the reef is the day out.

## Quick answer

Two days covers the city. Take the first for the history: the Resistance Archive and Museum, the Chega! exhibition in the old Comarca prison at Balide and Santa Cruz Cemetery, then climb to Cristo Rei for sunset and eat grilled fish on the Lecidere waterfront. Give the second to the water, a reef dive at Dili Rock or the ferry to Atauro.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Jul · Oct
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $70–140
- **Language:** Tetum and Portuguese
- **Getting around:** Microlets, taxis and a hired car
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.timorleste.tl/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Dili

### 1. Cristo Rei of Dili

Landmark · Cape Fatucama, Metiaut, at the east end of the bay

A 27-metre Christ on a globe at the tip of the cape, reached by 570 concrete steps from the beach car park. Climb in the last hour of light: the whole bay turns towards you, and the Stations of the Cross line the way up.

- **Time:** 1–1.5 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Carry water and go down the far side for Jesus Backside Beach

### 2. Timorese Resistance Archive & Museum

Museum · Rua Formosa, central Dili

The best single introduction to the country. "To Resist is to Win" walks through 24 years of occupation across 1,300 square metres: the guerrilla war in the mountains, the clandestine network in the towns, and the diplomatic front abroad.

- **Time:** 1.5–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Check at the desk
- **Best at:** Morning, before the heat
- **Tip:** Come here first; every other stop in Dili makes more sense afterwards

### 3. Centro Nacional Chega!

Museum · Former Comarca prison, Balide

A Portuguese-built prison from 1963 that the occupation used for political detainees, now the home of the truth commission's legacy. The cells are left open. Chega means "enough", and the exhibition earns the word.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Check at the desk
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Give it time; the cell blocks are hard going

### 4. A reef dive at Dili Rock

Diving · North coast, about 10 minutes west of central Dili

Shore diving starts ten minutes from town: a sandy slope and a coral ridge with bommies and gorgonians, easy enough for a first dive. Dive Timor Lorosae has run trips here since 2000 and will also take you out to K41 or Atauro.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Paid, through a dive operator
- **Best at:** Dry season, May to November
- **Tip:** Book a day ahead through a Dili dive shop

Links: [Dive Timor Lorosae](https://divetimor.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. The ferry to Atauro

Day trip · Dili port to Beloi, Atauro Island

A 2016 Conservation International survey counted an average of 253 reef fish species per site here, the highest recorded anywhere. The slow government ferry takes around three hours to Beloi, so stay a night rather than turning straight round.

- **Time:** Overnight is best
- **Cost:** A few dollars on the ferry
- **Best at:** Dry season, calm seas
- **Tip:** Check the schedule the day before; crossings are cancelled in bad weather

Links: [Ferry schedule](https://timorleste.tl/plan-your-trip/ferries?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Santa Cruz Cemetery

Memorial · Santa Cruz, central Dili

On 12 November 1991 Indonesian troops opened fire on a funeral procession here, and a smuggled film of it turned the world's attention to Timor. Little marks the day itself, but the grave of Sebastião Gomes is still a place of pilgrimage.

- **Time:** 30–45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** This is a working cemetery; dress modestly and keep your voice down

Links: [Tourism Timor-Leste](https://timorleste.tl/destinations/attractions/santa-cruz-cemetery?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Tais Market

Market · Colmera, central Dili

A small pink-walled compound selling tais, the hand-woven cloth UNESCO listed for urgent safeguarding in 2021, alongside carvings and silver. Pattern and colour tell you which district a piece comes from, and good work is worth paying for.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free to browse
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Bring small US dollar notes and ask who wove the piece

Links: [UNESCO](https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/tais-timor-leste-unesco-list-intangible-cultural-heritage-need-urgent-safeguarding?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Areia Branca at sunset

Beach · Avenida de Areia Branca, Metiaut

The white-sand beach on the eastern curve of the bay is where Dili goes at the end of the day. Beach bars line the road, the water is sheltered, and the view runs back across the bay to the city lights.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Pair it with the Cristo Rei climb, a few minutes further along the road

### 9. Grilled fish on the Lecidere waterfront

Food · Lecidere seafront, central Dili

After dark the seafront fills with charcoal grills and plastic chairs on the sand, and the fish comes straight off the boats. Pick one, have it grilled, and eat it with rice and chilli where Dili itself eats.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** A few dollars
- **Best at:** After dark
- **Tip:** Agree the price for the fish by weight before it goes on the grill

### 10. Whale watching on the Wetar Strait

Wildlife · Boat trips from Dili and Atauro

The strait drops past 3,000 metres close to shore, and pygmy blue whales migrate through it. The peak runs from mid-October into November, when licensed operators run half- and full-day trips that also find sperm whales and dolphins.

- **Time:** Half or full day
- **Cost:** Paid, through a licensed operator
- **Best at:** Mid-October to November
- **Tip:** Book early in the season; boats are few and fill fast

## Dili travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Dili?

Two days for the city: one for the Resistance Museum, Chega! and Santa Cruz, one for Cristo Rei, the beaches and a dive. Add a night on Atauro, and two more for Maubisse and a pre-dawn climb of Mount Ramelau.

### When is the best time to visit Dili?

The dry season, May to November. Water is clearest from May to July, and mid-October to November adds the pygmy blue whale migration. December to April is wet: roads slide and ferries are cancelled.

### What currency does Dili use?

The US dollar, with local centavo coins for change. Cash is king: cards work in few places and cash machines are concentrated in Dili, so draw what you need before heading out.

### Do I need a visa for Timor-Leste?

Most nationalities get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Dili airport, paid in US dollars cash. Arriving overland needs an authorisation arranged in advance. Check the Migration Service before you book.

### How do I get from Dili to Atauro?

Government ferries leave Dili port for Beloi on most days of the week, a crossing of around three hours. Schedules change and bad weather cancels sailings, so check the tourism board's ferry page the day before.
