# Top 10 Things To Do in Debrecen

Debrecen, Hungary · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Debrecen is the Calvinist Rome, and it has twice been the country's capital in an emergency. Kossuth read the dethronement of the Habsburgs from the Great Church in April 1849, and a provisional government formed here in December 1944. Hungary's second city grew up around that one building.

## Quick answer

Two days. Day one is the centre on foot: the Reformed Great Church and its tower, the Reformed College library next door, and Munkácsy's Christ trilogy at the Déri Museum across the square. Day two is the Nagyerdő, the forest at the end of tram 1, where the thermal water, the zoo and the botanical garden sit within a few minutes of each other. Add a third day for the Hortobágy puszta.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** $45–95
- **Language:** Hungarian
- **Getting around:** Walking and trams

## The 10 best things to do in Debrecen

### 1. The Reformed Great Church

Church · Piac u. 4-6, Debrecen 4026

The building the city is arranged around, and the reason Debrecen is called the Calvinist Rome. Neoclassical, finished in 1824, 1,500 square metres of floor, and the room where Kossuth read the dethronement of the Habsburgs in April 1849. Take the tower ticket: the climb to the bells is the point.

- **Time:** 45–60 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed, towers included
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** Hours move with the season, so check nagytemplom.hu before a late afternoon visit

### 2. The Déri Museum

Museum · Déri tér 1, Debrecen 4026

Eastern Hungary's most important museum, and the permanent home of Munkácsy's Christ trilogy: Christ before Pilate, Golgotha and Ecce Homo, hung together in one room. All three have been Hungarian state property since 2019. The rest came from Frigyes Déri's 1920 bequest.

- **Time:** 1.5–2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays. Last tickets at 17:00 and the halls start closing at 17:30

Links: [Website](https://www.derimuzeum.hu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Aquaticum Debrecen

Thermal bath · Nagyerdei park 1, Debrecen 4032

Thermal water under the Great Forest, an indoor Mediterranean pleasure bath, outdoor pools in summer and a sauna world, ten minutes from Kossuth tér at the far end of tram 1. This is what most Hungarians come to Debrecen for.

- **Time:** 3–4 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday afternoon
- **Tip:** Pools close at 20:30 and the building at 21:00; sauna world opens at 14:00 on weekdays

### 4. The Reformed College of Debrecen

Museum · Kálvin tér 16, Debrecen 4026

The school of the nation, next door to the Great Church. A frescoed staircase climbs to the Oratory, where the 1849 assembly sat, and on to the Great Library. Adult entry is 800 forints, which buys more history per forint than anything else in the city.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** 800 HUF adult, 400 HUF concession
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Open Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:00, closed Sunday; guided tours in English are bookable

Links: [Website](https://muzeum.drk.hu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Hortobágy National Park

Day trip · Petőfi tér 9, Hortobágy 4071

The puszta: 820 square kilometres of grassland, grey cattle, racka sheep and horse herds, on the UNESCO list since 1999 and Hungary's first national park. The Nine-arch Bridge, 167 metres of it, stands at the village edge on Route 33. About 40 km west.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Ticketed sections
- **Best at:** Spring or autumn
- **Tip:** Start at the visitor centre in Hortobágy village and book the wildlife park separately

### 6. MODEM

Gallery · Baltazár Dezső tér 1-3, Debrecen 4026

Contemporary art in a glass box beside the Déri Museum, open since 2006. The programme is temporary exhibitions rather than a permanent collection, so read what is hanging before you commit an afternoon to it.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Wednesday evening
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays. Wednesdays run noon to 20:00, the other days 10:00 to 18:00

Links: [Website](https://modemart.hu/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Nagyerdei Kultúrpark

Family · Ady Endre út 1, Debrecen 4032

A zoo of 165 species, a plant collection since 1992 and the largest permanent funfair in the Tiszántúl, all inside the Great Forest. The zoo runs year round; the 24 rides only work in season.

- **Time:** 2–3 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The amusement park runs 1 May to 30 September, weekdays 10:00 to 18:00

Links: [Website](https://www.zoodebrecen.hu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. The Nagyerdei Water Tower

Landmark · Pallagi út 7, Debrecen 4032

A 1913 water tower rebuilt in 2015 into a viewing deck, a bar and the city's tourist information point. It is the one place in Debrecen where you look down on the Great Forest canopy rather than up into it.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Varies by event
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Open 10:00 to 23:00 daily, with the TourInfo desk on the ground floor

Links: [Website](https://nagyerdeiviztorony.hu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. St Anne's Cathedral

Church · Szent Anna u. 15, Debrecen 4024

The Catholic answer in a Calvinist city. Giovanni Battista Carlone built it in 1721 for Cardinal Imre Csáky and it was dedicated to St Anne in 1746. Fire took both towers in 1811 and Ferenc Povolny rebuilt them in 1834. A cathedral since 1993.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Between services
- **Tip:** Two minutes from Kossuth tér on foot, down Szent Anna utca

Theatre · Kossuth utca 10, Debrecen 4024

Debrecen's national theatre, a few steps off Kossuth tér and named for the poet Mihály Csokonai Vitéz. In summer the company moves out to the open-air stage in the Great Forest, which is the better ticket if the weather holds.

- **Time:** 2–3 hr for a performance
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** Box office Monday to Friday 9:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 19:00, and until curtain on show days

## Debrecen travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Debrecen?

Two. Day one is the centre on foot: the Great Church and its tower, the Reformed College library next door, Munkácsy's Christ trilogy at the Déri Museum and St Anne's Cathedral. Day two is the Great Forest at the end of tram 1, for the thermal water, the zoo and the botanical garden. Add a third for Hortobágy.

### How do you get to Debrecen from Budapest?

By train. Direct services leave Budapest Nyugati roughly every couple of hours for Debrecen Nagyállomás and take about three hours. Debrecen International Airport takes flights from Munich, London Luton and Varna, but the route list is short, so most visitors arrive through Budapest.

### What is Debrecen famous for?

Calvinism and two emergencies. It is the centre of the Hungarian Reformed Church, which is why it is called the Calvinist Rome, and it has been the country's capital twice: in 1849, when Kossuth read the dethronement of the Habsburgs, and again from December 1944.

### Is Debrecen worth visiting?

Yes, for two days. Hungary's second city does not try to be Budapest: one great church, one great museum, a forest with thermal water in it, and the puszta forty kilometres west. Prices sit well below the capital's.

### When is the best time to visit Debrecen?

May, June and September. July and August bring the Campus Festival, the Wine and Jazz Days and the Flower Carnival, the busiest week of the year and worth planning around either way. Late November brings the Advent market to Kossuth tér.
