Quick answer

Give Cali three days and three nights. Spend the first morning on foot in the centre: La Merced, the Bulevar del Río, La Ermita and the Gato del Río, then climb to San Antonio for sunset. Ride up to Cristo Rey or hike the Tres Cruces early on the second day, and see La Tertulia. Every night belongs to salsa: take a class, then dance at La Topa Tolondra or Tin Tin Deo.

Cali is the capital of the Valle del Cauca and the city that made salsa its own. Founded in 1536 on the Río Cali, it sits on the valley floor under the Farallones, an hour's climb from the Pacific lowlands, and it saves its energy for the night.

Cali travel FAQ

How many days do you need in Cali?+
Three. One for the centre on foot (La Merced, the Bulevar del Río, La Ermita, the Gato del Río and La Tertulia), one for Cristo Rey or the Tres Cruces and San Antonio, and a third for a day trip to the Río Pance or Lago Calima. Keep every night for salsa.
When is the best time to visit Cali?+
December to February, the driest stretch, and late December above all, when the Feria de Cali fills the city from 25 to 30 December. April, May, October and November are the wettest months, with rain mostly in the afternoon.
Where should you stay in Cali?+
Granada and El Peñón, on the north and west banks of the river, for restaurants and easy taxis. San Antonio suits those who want the colonial barrio and its bars on the doorstep. All three are within a short ride of the salsa clubs.
Can you learn salsa in Cali as a beginner?+
Yes, and most visitors do. Many clubs, Tin Tin Deo among them, run a free beginners' lesson early in the evening, and schools like Swing Latino and Sondeluz sell private packages. A few hours is enough to manage the basic Cali step on a crowded floor.
Is Cali safe for visitors?+
Take the precautions you would in any large Colombian city. Use app or hotel taxis at night, keep phones out of sight on the street, and stay in the well-used barrios after dark. Hike the Tres Cruces in company and in the morning, when the trail is busy.
