# Top 10 Things To Do in Cagliari

Cagliari, Italy · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and behaves like a city rather than a resort: about 146,000 people, a working port, a university that opened in 1606, and the largest covered market in Italy. It also has eight kilometres of beach inside its own bus network and a flamingo colony behind it.

## Quick answer

The best things to do in Cagliari are the terrace on the Bastione di Saint Remy, the Nuragic bronzes in the National Archaeological Museum, the climb up the Torre dell'Elefante, the flamingos at Molentargius and an afternoon on Poetto. Three days covers the city. A fourth buys the Roman ruins at Nora or the nuraghe at Barumini.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** May · Jun · Sep · Oct
- **Ideal length:** 3 days
- **Budget per day:** €90–140
- **Language:** Italian
- **Getting around:** On foot in the old city, CTM buses to the beach
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://cagliariturismo.comune.cagliari.it/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Cagliari

### 1. Walk out onto the Bastione di Saint Remy

Landmark · Piazza Costituzione, Castello, 09124 Cagliari

The bastion is a limestone terrace built at the end of the nineteenth century over the Spanish walls, and it is the seam where Castello meets the lower city. A monumental staircase climbs from Piazza Costituzione, and from the parapet the whole of Cagliari reads at once. No gate and no ticket, so do it first.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Come up the staircase and leave along the Umberto I ramp into Villanova, which puts you at Via Garibaldi

### 2. Read Nuragic Sardinia at the National Archaeological Museum

Museum · Piazza Arsenale 1, Castello, 09124 Cagliari

Sardinia had a Bronze Age civilisation of its own, and this is where it is explained. The collection runs from prehistory through the Nuragic bronze figurines, the island's signature artefact, into Phoenician, Punic and Roman Karalis. It anchors the Cittadella dei Musei, so three more collections sit within a minute.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Doors are 08:30 to 19:30 and the ticket desk closes at 18:45, so a late-afternoon arrival is tighter than it looks

Links: [Website](https://museinazionalicagliari.cultura.gov.it/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. Climb the Torre dell'Elefante

Landmark · Via Università, Castello, 09124 Cagliari

Giovanni Capula finished this tower in 1307, one of a pair the Pisans raised to hold the gates of Castello against Aragon. It is built of pale limestone with its inner face left open, so the wooden stairs are visible from the street and the climb is up the back of a wall rather than inside a shaft. The small stone elephant sits on the outer face.

- **Time:** 40 min
- **Cost:** €3
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The twin Torre di San Pancrazio on Piazza Indipendenza has been closed to visitors, so check before planning both

Links: [Website](https://www.comune.cagliari.it/portale/page/it/torre_dellelefante?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 4. Go down into the cathedral crypt

Landmark · Piazza Palazzo, Castello, 09124 Cagliari

The cathedral was begun in the middle of the thirteenth century in Pisan Romanesque, then reworked so heavily that the front you see is a twentieth-century return to the Pisan idea. The reason to come is underneath: the crypt is cut into rock below the sanctuary, its walls lined with niches holding the remains of martyrs.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free entry, crypt ticketed
- **Best at:** Late morning
- **Tip:** The square outside holds the Palazzo Regio and the old city hall, so give it ten minutes before you go in

Links: [Website](https://cagliariturismo.comune.cagliari.it/en/vivicagliari/crypt-cathedral-santa-maria?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Spend an afternoon on Poetto

Free · Lungomare Poetto, 09126 Cagliari

Poetto is eight kilometres of pale sand running from the foot of the Sella del Diavolo out to Quartu Sant'Elena, and it belongs to the city rather than to a resort strip: a walking and cycling path runs its length and ordinary city buses reach it. The beach is twenty minutes from the cathedral.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** CTM lines PF, PQ and 5 run from the centre and stop repeatedly along the beach, so pick a stop rather than a terminus

Links: [Website](https://www.sardegnaturismo.it/en/explore/poetto?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Find the flamingos at Molentargius

Free · Parco Naturale Regionale Molentargius-Saline, Edificio Sali Scelti, Cagliari

The wetland behind Poetto is 1,600 hectares of freshwater ponds and worked salt pans, protected under the Ramsar Convention since 1977. It holds the largest resident colony of pink flamingos in the Mediterranean. The birds are visible from the paths on foot or by bike, and the park sits between the city and the beach.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Bring binoculars and take the flat cycle paths; the colony keeps its distance from the banks

Links: [Website](https://www.parks.it/parco.molentargius/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Stand in the Roman amphitheatre

Landmark · Viale Sant'Ignazio da Laconi, Stampace, 09123 Cagliari

Built between the first and second centuries AD, this is the largest Roman structure on the island, and its distinction is that most of it is not built at all: the tiers, the corridors and the animal pens were cut straight into the limestone of the slope. The botanic garden and the Roman houses of the Villa di Tigellio are a few minutes downhill.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** €3
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The €8 combined ticket pays for itself if you are also climbing the Torre dell'Elefante

Links: [Website](https://www.comune.cagliari.it/portale/page/it/anfiteatro_romano?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Shop the San Benedetto market before lunch

Food · Piazza Nazzari, 09128 Cagliari (temporary hall)

San Benedetto opened in 1957 and at 8,000 square metres it is the largest covered market in Italy: fish on one level, meat and vegetables on the other. Since March 2025 trading has run from a temporary hall in Piazza Nazzari while the original building is renovated. Mornings, Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free to browse
- **Best at:** Before 11:00
- **Tip:** The fish counters are the reason to come and they thin out early; go first, then the produce

Links: [Website](https://www.comune.cagliari.it/portale/page/it/mercato_civico_san_benedetto?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Hike the Sella del Diavolo from Calamosca

Free · Viale Calamosca, Sant'Elia, 09126 Cagliari

The headland that closes the western end of Poetto is a limestone ridge the shape of a saddle, and the path up starts at the Calamosca car park. It is a little over three kilometres there and back with about 170 metres of climb. At the top are Punic remains, a cistern and towers, and a view of the city, the beach and the salt pans.

- **Time:** 1.5 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** The route is poorly signposted; follow the red waymarks and carry water, since there is no shade on the ridge

### 10. Visit the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Bonaria

Landmark · Piazza Bonaria, 09125 Cagliari

The hill east of the centre holds a fourteenth-century Aragonese church and, beside it, the vast basilica begun in the eighteenth century. The statue of the Virgin inside is the patron of Sardinia and the protector of sailors, which is why the votive offerings are largely ships. Twenty minutes from the Marina.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The feast falls on 24 April, when a night pilgrimage on foot climbs to the sanctuary

## Best beaches in Cagliari

Four stretches of coast, from the city beach to the coves on the road east.

1. **Poetto** (City beach · Poetto): Eight kilometres of pale sand between the Sella del Diavolo and Quartu, with a promenade and cycle path the whole length. CTM lines reach it from the centre.
2. **Calamosca** (Sheltered cove · Sant'Elia): A short curve of sand tucked under Capo Sant'Elia, calmer than Poetto and ten minutes from the centre. The Sella del Diavolo path starts here.
3. **Mari Pintau** (Pebble cove · Quartu Sant'Elena): The painted sea, twenty kilometres east on the road to Villasimius. Pebbles rather than sand, which is why the water is as clear as it is.
4. **Cala Regina** (Rocky inlet · Quartu Sant'Elena): A small inlet below a Spanish watchtower on the same stretch of the SP17. Rock and shingle, no facilities, and a view along the gulf.

## Best restaurants in Cagliari

Six kitchens, from the Michelin rooms on Viale Regina Margherita to sourdough pizza on the Corso.

1. **Dal Corsaro** (Fine dining · Marina): The city's benchmark fine-dining room, in the Marina a block back from the port, working Sardinian produce into a modern menu. Booking is not optional.
2. **Luigi Pomata** (Seafood · Marina): A Carloforte tuna family transplanted to Cagliari, running a restaurant, a bistro and a terrace under one roof. Tuna is the thing to order. [Website](https://luigipomata.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **CUCINA.eat** (Bib Gourmand · Piazza Galilei): A Bib Gourmand kitchen with a shop attached, where you can sit at a table or eat at the counter. Sardinian recipes handled with more invention.
4. **Sa Domu Sarda** (Sardinian classics · Via Sassari): The island's meat cooking done plainly in plain rooms: malloreddus, culurgiones, fregula, stews and sebadas. The food a Sardinian family would recognise. [Website](http://www.osteriasadomusarda.it/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **ChiaroScuro** (Tasting menus · Corso Vittorio Emanuele): Marina Ravarotto cooks island dishes most restaurants no longer attempt, including the hand-pulled thread pasta of Nuoro. A short menu in a small room.
6. **Framento** (Sourdough pizza · Corso Vittorio Emanuele): A pizzeria that mills its own approach to dough, with pasta and bread from the same starter. The reliable answer when the tasting menus are full.

## Best museums in Cagliari

Six collections, four of them inside the old arsenal at the top of Castello.

1. **Museo Archeologico Nazionale** (Nuragic Sardinia · Castello): The island's principal archaeological collection: Nuragic bronze figurines, Phoenician and Punic material, and Roman Karalis. [Website](https://museinazionalicagliari.cultura.gov.it/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Pinacoteca Nazionale** (Painting · Castello): Sardinian, Italian, Spanish and Flemish painting from the fifteenth century on, over three floors of the Cittadella. The Catalan retablos are the reason. [Website](https://museinazionalicagliari.cultura.gov.it/__descrizione-categoria/pinacoteca/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Galleria Comunale d'Arte** (Modern art · Giardini Pubblici): The civic gallery, opened in 1933 in the public gardens, holding the city's collection of Sardinian and Italian art of the last century. [Website](https://sistemamuseale.museicivicicagliari.it/galleria-comunale-darte-cagliari/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Museo del Tesoro di Sant'Eulalia** (Under the church · Marina): The parish treasure, and beneath it an excavated Roman street that runs under the Marina. Silverwork upstairs, the ancient city underneath.
5. **Museo delle Cere Anatomiche Clemente Susini** (Anatomical waxes · Castello): Early nineteenth-century anatomical models in wax, made for the university's medical teaching. Precise, and not for everyone.
6. **EXMA** (Exhibitions · Villanova): The city's exhibition centre, in the former municipal slaughterhouse since 1993. Temporary shows rather than a permanent collection, so check first.

## Best neighborhoods in Cagliari

Four historic quarters, each with a different argument for staying in it.

1. **Castello** (The walled quarter · Castello): The hill the Pisans walled in 1215, and still the reason the city is called Casteddu. Cathedral, towers and the Bastione are inside it. Steep, and quiet at night.
2. **Marina** (Between port and Via Roma · Marina): The grid of narrow streets running down from Castello to the waterfront, and the densest concentration of restaurants in the city.
3. **Stampace** (West of the Corso · Stampace): The quarter behind Largo Carlo Felice, with the Santa Chiara market, the church of Sant'Efisio and the botanic garden on the slope above.
4. **Villanova** (East of the Bastione · Villanova): Low painted houses on a regular grid, San Giacomo at its centre, and Via Garibaldi running through as the city's longest shopping street.

## Best markets and shops in Cagliari

Two food markets, one pedestrian shopping run and the monthly antiques stalls.

1. **Mercato di San Benedetto** (Largest in Italy · Piazza Nazzari): Opened in 1957 and covering 8,000 square metres. Trading has run from a temporary hall in Piazza Nazzari since March 2025 while the building is renovated. [Website](https://www.comune.cagliari.it/portale/page/it/mercato_civico_san_benedetto?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Mercato di Santa Chiara** (The oldest market · Stampace): A 300-square-metre hall in Stampace, the oldest surviving market in the city and the one to use if you want something to eat now.
3. **Via Manno and Via Garibaldi** (Pedestrian shopping · Villanova): One continuous pedestrian run dropping from the Bastione into Villanova, with the brands on Via Manno and older Cagliari houses among them.
4. **Antiques stalls** (Monthly · Piazza del Carmine): The antiques market sets up in Piazza del Carmine on the first Sunday of the month and Piazza Carlo Alberto on the second and fourth.

## Best bars in Cagliari

Two terraces on the ramparts and two historic cafés at the foot of them.

1. **Caffè Libarium Nostrum** (Rampart terrace · Castello): The terrace sits on top of the medieval walls at Santa Croce, the single best place in the city to be at sunset. Cocktails and small plates.
2. **Caffè degli Spiriti** (On the Bastione · Castello): Open on the Saint Remy esplanade since 2006, with loungers on the terrace and the gulf in front. Busy from aperitivo onwards.
3. **Antico Caffè** (Historic café · Piazza Costituzione): The old café at the foot of the Bastione, working from breakfast through to a late drink. The fallback that is never wrong.
4. **Caffè Svizzero** (Since 1880 · Largo Carlo Felice): Open in Largo Carlo Felice since 1880, and the interior is the point: stone vaults, a wooden bar and original fittings from the last century.

## Best day trips from Cagliari

Four trips within an hour or so: two archaeological, two on the coast.

1. **Nora, Pula** (35 km southwest · Pula): Sardinia's largest coastal excavation, founded by the Phoenicians and rebuilt by Rome. A theatre facing the sea, baths, mosaics and a beach next to the gate. [Website](https://musei.sardegna.beniculturali.it/musei/area-archeologica-di-nora/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Su Nuraxi di Barumini** (63 km north · Barumini): The Bronze Age tower complex that made the nuraghe a World Heritage listing, with a village grown up around the central keep. Visits are by guided tour only. [Website](https://www.fondazionebarumini.it/en/tickets-and-opening-hours/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Villasimius and Porto Giunco** (55 to 60 km east · Villasimius): The headland at the southeast corner of the island, where Porto Giunco puts white sand between the sea and a lagoon flamingos use. The coast road is the drive.
4. **Chia** (Southwest coast · Domus de Maria): Shallow coves behind low dunes on the southwest coast, with a Spanish watchtower above them. The furthest of the four and the one that wants a full day.

## Cagliari travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Cagliari?

Three. One for Castello and the museums, one for Poetto and Molentargius, and one for the Marina, the market and the amphitheatre. A fourth day buys a trip out to Nora or Barumini.

### When is the best time to visit Cagliari?

May, June, September and October. The daily average sits near 26°C in July and August, when Poetto is at its busiest, and near 10°C in January and February. The climate is dry-summer Mediterranean, so rain is a winter matter.

### How do you get from Cagliari airport to the city centre?

By train. Elmas Airport station is joined to the terminal by a covered walkway, and the ride to Cagliari Centrale takes five to seven minutes, running about every twenty minutes from around 05:30 to 23:00 for €1.30. ARST buses and taxis also serve the route.

### Do you need a car in Cagliari?

Not for the city, which is walkable end to end, and not for the beach, since CTM buses run to Poetto and Calamosca. You want one for Nora, Barumini and the Chia coast, where the bus service is thin or absent.

### Is Cagliari a beach city?

Yes, and unusually so. Poetto is eight kilometres of sand inside the city limits, reached on ordinary city buses, with the flamingo wetland of Molentargius directly behind it.
