# Top 10 Things To Do in Bruges

Bruges, Belgium · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 14 min read

Bruges made its money on cloth and credit, then lost the sea that carried both. The Zwin silted up, the merchants moved to Antwerp, and the city stopped rebuilding itself for four centuries, which is why the medieval street plan survived intact enough for UNESCO to list the whole centre in 2000.

## Quick answer

The best things to do in Bruges are the Belfry on the Markt, the Basilica of the Holy Blood on the Burg, the Flemish Primitives in the Groeningemuseum and Michelangelo’s Madonna in the Church of Our Lady, all within ten minutes of each other on foot. Give it two days, take the train rather than a car, and book the Belfry slot before you travel.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Apr · May · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2 days
- **Budget per day:** €120–190
- **Language:** Dutch
- **Getting around:** On foot, by bike, De Lijn buses
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://www.visitbruges.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Bruges

### 1. Climb the Belfry for the view over the Markt

Landmark · Markt 7, Bruges

The belfry has stood over the market square since the thirteenth century, was rebuilt after fire more than once, and now runs to 83 metres and 366 steps. The climb passes the treasury room where the city kept its charters, the drum that drives the carillon of 47 bells, and the open gallery, where the medieval street plan resolves into one picture.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** First slot of the day
- **Tip:** Book the timed ticket before you queue on the Markt

### 2. Cross the Markt into the Burg

Squares · Markt and Burg, Bruges

Two squares, a minute apart, hold most of the city's civic history. The Markt has been the trading floor since the tenth century and still carries the guild facades and the belfry. The Burg behind it is quieter and older: the Gothic city hall of 1376, the Renaissance chimneypiece of the Brugse Vrije, and the basilica in the corner. Walk it twice, once after dark.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning or after dark
- **Tip:** The city hall interior is a separate ticket from the square

Links: [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 3. See the relic in the Basilica of the Holy Blood

Basilica · Burg 13, Bruges

Two chapels stacked on one another in the corner of the Burg. The lower one, dedicated to Saint Basil, is bare Romanesque and one of the few left on this coast; the upper is nineteenth-century neo-Gothic, painted and gilded, and holds the phial of cloth said to carry the blood of Christ. The relic is presented for veneration daily.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday mornings
- **Tip:** Entry to the chapels is free; the treasury museum is ticketed

Links: [Website](https://www.holyblood.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 4. Stand in front of Van Eyck at the Groeningemuseum

Museum · Dijver 12, Bruges

Six centuries of painting in a building you can cross in an hour, and the first rooms are the reason to come: Jan van Eyck's Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele, Hans Memling's Moreel Triptych, Gerard David and Bosch. These are the Flemish Primitives on their home ground, painted for the churches and merchants of this city.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Opening
- **Tip:** The Musea Brugge combination ticket covers this and the Belfry

Links: [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en/visit/locations/groeningemuseum?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 5. Find Michelangelo’s Madonna in the Church of Our Lady

Church · Mariastraat, Bruges

The brick tower is one of the tallest of its kind in the world at about 115 metres. Inside, in a side chapel, sits Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, bought by a Bruges merchant family and shipped north in 1506, the only sculpture by him to leave Italy in his lifetime. The choir holds the tombs of Charles the Bold and Mary of Burgundy.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** The nave is free to enter; the museum section with the Madonna is ticketed

Links: [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 6. Walk the wards of Sint-Janshospitaal

Museum · Mariastraat 38, Bruges

One of the oldest surviving hospital buildings in Europe, in use from the twelfth century until the nineteenth and now a museum of its own history. The medieval wards hold the paintings Memling made for the hospital, the Shrine of Saint Ursula among them, and the pharmacy still has its jars. It faces the Church of Our Lady.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Any time
- **Tip:** Pair it with the Church of Our Lady across the street

Links: [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Take a boat through the canals

Boat trip · Rozenhoedkaai, Bruges

The half-hour circuit is the one thing every visitor does, and it earns the cliché: the water level puts you under the bridges and behind the houses, which is the angle the city was built to be seen from. Boats leave from landing stages in the centre and run when the weather allows rather than to a timetable. Queues are shortest before the coaches arrive.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Before 10am
- **Tip:** Boats do not run in winter or in high water, so check the day before

### 8. Cross the Begijnhof to the Minnewater

Heritage site · Begijnhof 30, Bruges

Founded in 1245 for beguines, women who lived in community without taking vows, and inhabited by Benedictine sisters since 1927. White houses around a courtyard of poplars and, in March, daffodils; UNESCO listed it with twelve other Flemish beguinages in 1998. Silence is asked for and largely kept. The Minnewater sits immediately south.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** The courtyard closes in the evening, so go before dusk

Links: [Website](https://www.visitbruges.be/en/things-to-do/culture-and-heritage/begijnhof-beguinage?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Tour De Halve Maan and its beer pipeline

Brewery · Walplein 26, Bruges

A working brewery in the middle of the old city, run by the same family since 1856 and the source of Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik. Rather than move out of the centre, the owners laid a three kilometre pipeline under the streets in 2016 to carry beer to the bottling plant. The tour climbs to the roof and ends with a glass.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Weekday afternoons
- **Tip:** The tour includes steep brewery stairs and a rooftop terrace

Links: [Website](https://www.halvemaan.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Walk the ramparts to the Sint-Janshuis mill

Windmill · Kruisvest 3, Bruges

The eastern edge of the old city is a raised green rampart with four windmills on it, and the Sint-Janshuis mill of 1770 is the one that still grinds grain on its original site. Inside, the miller works a single cramped floor of gears and stones. The walk out along the Kruisvest takes twenty minutes from the Markt and is the quietest stretch of the centre.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Windy afternoons
- **Tip:** The mill only turns when there is wind, and it opens seasonally

## Best restaurants in Bruges

Six dining rooms, from two Michelin stars in the suburbs to mussels on a small square.

1. **De Jonkman** (Modern Belgian · Sint-Kruis): Filip Claeys cooks North Sea fish, including the bycatch most kitchens ignore, and holds two Michelin stars. It sits in Sint-Kruis, a short taxi east. [Website](https://dejonkman.be/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Sans Cravate** (French · Langestraat): One Michelin star on the Langestraat, with the kitchen open to the room so the cooking is part of the evening. The name sets the tone: serious food without the ceremony.
3. **Bruut** (Modern Belgian · Meestraat): Bruno Timperman sources most of his produce within about thirty kilometres and serves one surprise menu from it. Small room by the canal, and it books out.
4. **Den Gouden Harynck** (French · Groeninge): Open since 1977 in a house behind the Groeningemuseum, and the most classical fine dining in Bruges: French technique, Flemish produce, no theatre. [Website](https://www.goudenharynck.be/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Poules Moules** (Brasserie · Simon Stevinplein): Mussels done a dozen ways on the Simon Stevinplein, plus the rest of the Flemish repertoire. The kind of room that is busy with locals in September and tourists in July.
6. **Bierbrasserie Cambrinus** (Flemish · Philipstockstraat): A beer hall that takes its kitchen as seriously as its list: stoverij cooked in brown ale, North Sea fish, and several hundred bottles to drink alongside. [Website](https://www.bierbrasseriecambrinus.eu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best beer bars in Bruges

Five rooms that treat Belgian beer as a subject, not a souvenir.

1. **'t Brugs Beertje** (Beer café · Kemelstraat): Open since 1983 and the reference point for beer in this city, with some 300 Belgian brews and staff who will steer you. Small and usually full. [Website](https://brugsbeertje.be/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **De Garre** (Estaminet · De Garre): Down an alley so narrow off the Breidelstraat that most people walk past. The house tripel comes with a wedge of cheese and a limit of three.
3. **Café Rose Red** (Trappist list · Cordoeaniersstraat): A courtyard bar inside a small hotel, and the place to work through the Trappist list in one sitting. Quieter than the Markt cafés a minute away. [Website](https://www.hotelrosered.be/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Bierbrasserie Cambrinus** (Beer hall · Philipstockstraat): Serving from the same address since 1892, with several hundred bottles and around twenty taps. It doubles as a dining room, so it works when half the table wants dinner. [Website](https://www.bierbrasseriecambrinus.eu/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Le Trappiste** (Cellar bar · Kuipersstraat): A medieval brick cellar a few minutes from the Markt, with a rotating tap list and a guest board. Down a flight of stairs, which keeps the passing trade upstairs.

## Best museums in Bruges

Six more Musea Brugge sites beyond the Groeningemuseum, all inside the old centre.

1. **Gruuthusemuseum** (City history · Dijver): The palace of the lords of Gruuthuse, reopened as five centuries of Bruges history told through what the city made: lace, tapestry, silver, a private oratory. [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Arentshuis** (Art museum · Dijver): A small eighteenth-century mansion next to the Groeningemuseum holding the work of Frank Brangwyn, the British painter born in Bruges, plus changing graphic-art shows. [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Volkskundemuseum** (Folk museum · Sint-Anna): Eight almshouses on the Balstraat turned into rooms of ordinary Flemish life: a cobbler, a hatter, a classroom, a sweet shop, and a working estaminet at the end of it. [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Potterie** (Hospital museum · Potterierei): A hospital founded in the thirteenth century on the quiet Potterierei canal, with its church, its collection of religious art and almost none of the crowds of the Dijver. [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Stadhuis** (Civic building · Burg): Bruges began building its city hall in 1376, one of the oldest in the Low Countries. The Gothic Hall upstairs has a polychrome vault and a mural cycle. [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Brugse Vrije** (Civic building · Burg): The seat of the Liberty of Bruges, the rural district governed from this building, kept for its Renaissance chimneypiece carved for Charles V. [Website](https://www.museabrugge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best chocolate shops in Bruges

Four chocolatiers who make what they sell, in a city with a shop on every corner that does not.

1. **The Chocolate Line** (Bean to bar · Simon Stevinplein): Dominique Persoone works bean to bar and is why Bruges chocolate has a reputation for experiment: wasabi, tobacco, Havana cigar. [Website](https://shop.thechocolateline.be/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Chocolatier Dumon** (Pralines · Eiermarkt): A family business making pralines in small batches since 1992, sold from a handful of tiny shops in the centre, of which the Eiermarkt one is the original.
3. **Sukerbuyc** (Handmade · Katelijnestraat): Started in 1977 on the Katelijnestraat, everything handmade in the atelier behind the counter, with a tearoom attached. Far enough from the Markt to be calm. [Website](https://www.sukerbuyc.be/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Depla Chocolatier** (Traditional · Mariastraat): Pol Depla has been working from the corner of the Mariastraat since 1958, a few doors from the Church of Our Lady, and the shopfront has barely changed.

## Best canals and parks in Bruges

Four stretches of water and green that cost nothing and take an hour each.

1. **Minnewater and its park** (Lake and park · Minnewater): The old inland harbour, now a still lake with swans and a park on its bank. Where the crowds thin, and where Cactusfestival sets up in July.
2. **Groenerei** (Canal quay · Groenerei): The green canal east of the Burg, with low bridges, ivy on the quays and no shops. The classic Bruges photograph without the Rozenhoedkaai queue.
3. **Koningin Astridpark** (City park · Sint-Anna): A nineteenth-century public garden with a bandstand and a pond, hemmed in by houses and used mostly by people who live here. The obvious place to sit between museums.
4. **Jan van Eyckplein and the Spiegelrei** (Historic quay · Sint-Jan): The old harbour quarter, where foreign merchants kept their trading houses when Bruges ran the northern economy. The Burghers' Lodge faces the water.

## Best neighborhoods in Bruges

Four quarters of the old city, each a different distance from the coach parks.

1. **Sint-Anna** (Residential quarter · East centre): East of the Burg, and the part of the centre where people live: the Jerusalem chapel, the almshouses of the Balstraat, and the ramparts with windmills.
2. **Langestraat** (Eating and drinking · East centre): The long street running east carries much of the city's independent trade, along with a run of bars open past the point where the Markt goes quiet.
3. **'t Zand** (Square · West centre): The big open square on the west side, rebuilt around the Concertgebouw, with the Saturday market and the buses. The modern face of a medieval city.
4. **Ezelstraat quarter** (Shops and studios · Northwest centre): North-west of the Markt, past the Ezelpoort gate, with antique shops, small galleries and the least touristed cafés inside the ring canal.

## Best day trips in Bruges

Six trips from Brugge station, none of them more than about ninety minutes away.

1. **Ghent** (City · 25 min by train): Twenty-five minutes by train, and the corrective to Bruges: a bigger, younger working city with the Ghent Altarpiece and a student population. [Website](https://visit.gent.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **Damme** (Village · 7 km by bike): The medieval outport of Bruges, seven kilometres northeast along a poplar-lined canal that is the point of the trip. Cycle it and eat eel on arrival. [Website](https://www.visitdamme.be/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Ostend** (Seaside city · 15 min by train): A quarter of an hour by train and the nearest North Sea: a long promenade, grey shrimp, the Mu.ZEE collection and the coastal tram. [Website](https://www.visitoostende.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Ypres** (Historic town · 90 min by train): About an hour and a half via Kortrijk, to the rebuilt Cloth Hall, the In Flanders Fields Museum and the Last Post sounded under the Menin Gate every evening since 1928. [Website](https://www.inflandersfields.be/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Blankenberge** (Seaside town · 15 min by train): Fifteen minutes north to the most old-fashioned of the Belgian resorts: a pier, a sea wall of apartment blocks, and a beach that fills the moment the sun appears. [Website](https://www.visit-blankenberge.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Antwerp** (City · 90 min by train): Around ninety minutes by train, for Rubens, the diamond quarter and the cathedral, plus the best shopping in the country. The station alone justifies the platform time.

## Festivals & annual events in Bruges (2026)

- **Brugse Meifoor** (Apr–May): The May fair takes over the Zand and the Beursplein for three weeks of rides and stalls.
- **Procession of the Holy Blood** (May): Ascension Day. The relic is carried through the centre in a costumed procession UNESCO listed as intangible heritage in 2009.
- **Feest in 't Park** (Jun): A free world-music festival in the Minnewaterpark, on 27 June in 2026. It is the informal start of the Bruges summer.
- **Cactusfestival** (Jul): Three days of music in the Minnewaterpark each July. Tickets sell before the line-up is complete, which tells you enough.
- **MAfestival Brugge** (Jul–Aug): The early-music festival, in the churches and the concert hall each summer. One of the oldest festivals of its kind in Europe.
- **Brugse Zandfeesten** (Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep): A large antiques and flea market on the Zand, on the first Sunday of June, July and August. Arrive early and expect a full square.
- **Brugs Bierfestival** (Sep): Belgian brewers pour at the convention centre on the Beursplein each September.
- **Wintergloed** (Nov–Jan): The winter light trail links the Markt, the Minnewater and the parks between, alongside the Christmas markets and the ice rink.

## Must-try dishes in Bruges, Belgium

- **Mosselen met friet**: Mussels steamed with celery and onion, served in the pot with fries.
- **Vlaamse stoverij**: Beef stewed slowly in brown ale with mustard and bread, the Flemish answer to boeuf bourguignon.
- **Garnaalkroketten**: Croquettes of North Sea grey shrimp, peeled by hand, fried and served with lemon and fried parsley.
- **Waterzooi**: A creamy Flemish stew of chicken or fish with root vegetables, from Ghent originally and on most Bruges menus.
- **Frieten**: Fried twice, in beef fat at the old-fashioned stands, and eaten from a paper cone with mayonnaise.
- **Brugse achten**: A hard figure-of-eight biscuit sold by the city's bakeries, with an origin story attached to Mary of Burgundy.
- **Brugse Zot**: The blond city beer brewed at De Halve Maan on the Walplein. Straffe Hendrik comes from the same coppers.
- **Pralines**: Filled Belgian chocolates, bought by weight from a chocolatier who makes them on site.

## Bruges transport & airports

- **Brussels Airport** (BRU): The country’s main airport, with its station directly under the terminal and a direct train to Bruges roughly hourly, taking about 50 minutes. Most visitors arrive this way. [Website](https://www.brusselsairport.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **Trains** (NMBS): Brugge station sits a fifteen minute walk south of the Markt. Ghent is roughly 25 minutes away, Ostend 15, Brussels about an hour, several trains an hour. [Website](https://www.belgiantrain.be/en?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **Buses** (De Lijn): City and regional buses leave from the bus station on the Stationsplein beside the trains. The centre is served well enough that a car is a liability rather than an asset. [Website](https://www.delijn.be/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **On foot and by bike** (Centre): The historic centre is about two kilometres across, flat, and largely cobbled. Walking covers everything in this guide except De Jonkman; rental bikes make Damme and the ramparts easy. [Website](https://www.visitbruges.be/en/plan-your-visit/mobility?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Interesting facts

- UNESCO inscribed the historic centre of Bruges in 2000. The belfry and the beguinage carry listings of their own, in two other groups.
- The Madonna and Child in the Church of Our Lady is the only Michelangelo sculpture that left Italy in his lifetime, shipped north in 1506.
- Since 2016 a pipeline about three kilometres long has carried beer under the old city from De Halve Maan to its bottling plant.
- The word bourse is traced to the Van der Beurze family, whose house on the square now called the Beursplein was where merchants met.
- Bruges lost its sea when the Zwin silted up in the fifteenth century, and stopped rebuilding. That is why the medieval fabric survives.

## Bruges travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Bruges?

Two. The first covers the Markt, the Burg, the Belfry and the basilica; the second the museums on the Dijver and Mariastraat, the beguinage and the brewery. A single day works if you accept seeing two of the four big museums, and staying the night is the only way to have the centre to yourself in the evening.

### Is Bruges worth doing as a day trip from Brussels?

It works: the train takes about an hour and runs several times an hour, and the centre is small enough to walk. You will share it with every other day tripper between eleven and four, which is the argument for arriving on the first trains or staying over.

### When is the best time to visit Bruges?

April, May and September. The weather is workable, the light is long and the coaches are fewer than in July and August. December has the Christmas markets and the Wintergloed light trail, along with short days and cold canals.

### Do you need to book tickets in advance?

For the Belfry, yes: entry runs on timed slots and the staircase is single file. The Groeningemuseum and Sint-Janshospitaal rarely sell out, and a Musea Brugge combination ticket covers several sites if you plan more than two.

### How do you get from Brussels Airport to Bruges?

By train, from the station directly under the terminal. There is a roughly hourly direct service taking about 50 minutes, and more options with a change in Brussels or Ghent. A taxi is neither faster nor cheaper.
