# Top 10 Things To Do in Bodø

Bodø, Norway · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 12 min read

Bodø was bombed flat in May 1940, rebuilt in plain post-war concrete, and spent decades being the place people changed transport for Lofoten. That reading is out of date. It held European Capital of Culture in 2024, the first city north of the Arctic Circle to do so, and the strongest tidal current on earth runs half an hour down the road.

## Quick answer

Time the day around Saltstraumen. The current turns roughly every six hours and the hours either side of maximum flow are the whole show, so read a tide table before anything else. Then give the Norwegian Aviation Museum half a day, drive the Kjerringøy road north for the trading post and the red sand at Mjelle, and keep an evening free: from Keiservarden the view carries to Lofoten.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Jun · Jul · Aug
- **Ideal length:** 3 days, 5 with Lofoten
- **Budget per day:** NOK 1,200–2,200
- **Language:** Norwegian, with English spoken almost everywhere
- **Getting around:** The centre on foot, Reis Nordland buses, a car for the coast road

## The 10 best things to do in Bodø

### 1. Saltstraumen

Natural wonder · Saltstraumen, Bodø

Around 400 million cubic metres of water force through a strait 3 km long and 150 m wide every six hours, at up to 20 knots, throwing whirlpools several metres across. It is at its loudest either side of the turn, so read the tide table first, then watch from the bridge or the shoreline path below it.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Free to watch
- **Best at:** Either side of the tidal turn
- **Tip:** Check the tide table before you set out. Slack water is nothing

### 2. Norwegian Aviation Museum

Museum · Børtindgata 35 B, 8004 Bodø

Norway's national aviation museum and the largest in the Nordics, laid out as a propeller with a real control tower at the hub. The collection runs from a Tiger Moth to a Spitfire, a Starfighter and a U-2. The civil aviation hall is the half most visitors skip, and it explains why a country this shape flies the way it does.

- **Time:** 3 hrs
- **Cost:** Adult NOK 175, child NOK 90
- **Best at:** A wet afternoon
- **Tip:** It closes for the whole of January, so check the season before you plan around it

### 3. Kjerringøy trading post

Historic site · Kjerringøy, Bodø

Fifteen preserved buildings of a nineteenth-century Nordland merchant estate, about 40 km north of Bodø with the Festvåg to Misten ferry in the middle. The main season runs from May; outside it the café opens on Saturdays. Knut Hamsun's novels were filmed here, which is why the interiors look staged and are not.

- **Time:** Half a day
- **Cost:** Adult from NOK 150, more with a guide
- **Best at:** Late May to August
- **Tip:** The guided ticket is the one worth buying. The interiors are the point

### 4. Keiservarden

Viewpoint · Keiservarden, Rønvikfjellet, Bodø

A 366 m plateau named for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the walk about 100,000 people a year do. Sherpa-built steps climb from the Rønvikfjellet car park, roughly 2.5 km to the cairn, at a grade that suits most people. On a clear evening the view runs the length of Vestfjorden to the Lofoten wall.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late evening, June and July
- **Tip:** Start from the Rønvikfjellet car park rather than walking up from town

### 5. RIB safari to Saltstraumen

Boat trip · Departs the city-centre harbour, Bodø

The current read from water level instead of from the bridge, in a rigid inflatable, with white-tailed eagles along the shore on the way out. Flotation suits and goggles come with the ticket. Minimum age is six, and it is not a trip for anyone with a bad back or neck.

- **Time:** 3 hrs
- **Cost:** Check the operator
- **Best at:** Around maximum current
- **Tip:** Book the departure that matches the tide, not the one that suits your day

### 6. Jektefartsmuseet

Museum · Kvernhusveien 26, 8070 Bodø

Built around Anna Karoline, the only preserved original Nordland jekt. The jekt was the cargo boat that carried stockfish south to Bergen for centuries, and standing under the hull is the point of the visit. It was named Norwegian museum of the year for 2024.

- **Time:** 1.5 hrs
- **Cost:** Adult NOK 150, under 18 free
- **Best at:** June to August, daily
- **Tip:** Bodin Church, the oldest building in Bodø, is a short walk away

Links: [Nordlandsmuseet](https://www.nordlandsmuseet.no/jektefartsmuseet?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 7. Mjelle

Beach · Mjelle, Bodø

Twenty kilometres up the Kjerringøy road, three more down a side road marked Mjelle and Mulstrand, then about half an hour on foot over the ridge. The sand is half white and half deep red, coloured by garnet eroded out of the rock behind it. No kiosk and no shelter, which is most of the appeal.

- **Time:** 3 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Midnight sun, June and July
- **Tip:** Park at the end of the side road. The last stretch is walked

Links: [Visit Bodø](https://visitbodo.com/en/guide/hikes-in-bodo-salten/mjelle/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Nyholmen Skandse

Historic site · Nyholmen, 8012 Bodø

An earthwork fort on the point across the harbour, built in 1810 to keep British warships off the town's grain stores and closed again in 1835. It is one of only two forts ever raised in northern Norway, and volunteers rebuilt it from the original drawings using 2,000 tonnes of stone.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late evening
- **Tip:** Nordland Musikkfestuke stages a midnight concert here in August

### 9. Bodø Cathedral

Landmark · Bodø sentrum, Bodø

Consecrated in 1956 and the clearest statement of what the town did after the bombing: a long basilica in concrete by Blakstad and Munthe-Kaas, with a free-standing bell tower and a 12 m stained glass window. It reads austere from the street and stops reading that way once you are inside.

- **Time:** 30 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday mornings
- **Tip:** Ten minutes from the harbour, so pair it with Nyholmen

Links: [Church of Norway](https://www.kirken.no/bododomkirke?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Aspmyra Stadion

Stadium · Aspmyra Stadion, Bodø

Bodø/Glimt play here on an 8,270-capacity ground with an artificial pitch and undersoil heating, which is what this latitude requires. In April 2025 they knocked out Lazio and became the first Norwegian club to reach a European semi-final. Tickets go through the club, and through the booths on match days.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Varies by match
- **Best at:** The league season
- **Tip:** European nights sell out first, so buy as soon as the draw is made

## Bodø travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Bodø?

Three is the working answer: one for Saltstraumen and the aviation museum, one for the Kjerringøy road, and one for a hike and the town itself. Add two if you are carrying on into Lofoten, because the crossing takes most of a day at each end.

### When is the midnight sun in Bodø?

Roughly the start of June to the middle of July, when the sun does not set at all. The reverse does not follow: Bodø sits just south of the polar night limit, so even at the winter solstice the sun clears the horizon for about fifty minutes.

### Is Saltstraumen worth the trip?

Yes, at the right hour. The current turns roughly every six hours and the show is the couple of hours either side of maximum flow; at slack water there is nothing to see. Read a tide table first, then decide between the bridge and a boat.

### How do you get from Bodø to Lofoten?

Two ways. Torghatten's car ferry crosses Vestfjorden to Moskenes in about three and a quarter hours, with up to nine sailings a day in summer and one or two in winter. Havspor's express boat to Svolvær takes about three and a half hours and carries no cars.

### Do you need a car in Bodø?

Not for the town, which is walkable end to end. You do for Kjerringøy and Mjelle, both up county road 834 with a ferry on the way to the first. Saltstraumen is reachable by bus or on an organised trip if you would rather not drive.
