# Top 10 Things To Do in Andorra la Vella

Andorra la Vella, Andorra · Europe · By Wimup Editorial, 13 min read

Andorra la Vella sits at 1,023 metres, which makes it the highest capital in Europe, and it is built around two things: a valley floor of low-tax shops and the mountains directly above them. Give the old town a morning, the thermal spa an afternoon, and the trails everything that is left.

## Quick answer

Two days is the right length. Spend the first in town: Casa de la Vall, the Romanesque apse at Sant Esteve, the Dalí clock on Plaça de la Rotonda, then the shopping run along Avinguda Meritxell, with Caldea in the evening. Give the second day to the mountains, either the Madriu valley on foot or Grandvalira on skis.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Feb · Jun · Sep
- **Ideal length:** 2–3 days
- **Budget per day:** $100–180
- **Language:** Catalan, with Spanish, French and Portuguese widely spoken
- **Getting around:** Walking, with national bus lines to every parish
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://visitandorra.com/en/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Andorra la Vella

### 1. Caldea

Thermal spa · Parc de la Mola 10, AD700 Escaldes-Engordany

The glass pyramid a ten-minute walk from the centre is the largest thermal complex in southern Europe, fed by the hot springs Escaldes is named for. Three hours buys the lagoon, the Roman baths and the outdoor pools. Inúu next door is the adults-only half, and much quieter.

- **Time:** 3 hr
- **Cost:** €€
- **Best at:** Evening
- **Tip:** Book a time slot online

### 2. Avinguda Meritxell

Shopping · Avinguda Meritxell, Andorra la Vella

Andorra’s general indirect tax runs at 4.5%, against 21% in Spain and 20% in France, and this is where the gap gets spent: electronics, perfume, ski kit, spirits. The run is pedestrian for most of its length and carries on into Escaldes as Avinguda Carlemany.

- **Time:** 2 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday morning
- **Tip:** Check your customs allowance before crossing back

### 3. Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley

World Heritage site · Trailheads at Escaldes-Engordany and Engolasters

Andorra’s only World Heritage site, inscribed in 2004: 4,247 hectares of glacial valley, about 9% of the country, with no road into any of it. Shepherds’ paths, stone huts and the remains of iron forges. Doing it properly takes a full day and about 1,300 metres of climb.

- **Time:** Full day
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** June to September
- **Tip:** Start early from Escaldes

Landmark · Carrer de la Vall, AD500 Andorra la Vella

A manor house of 1580 that served as Andorra’s parliament from 1702 until 2011, when the General Council moved next door. Half-hour guided tours in Catalan, Spanish or English take in the old courtroom and the council chamber. Admission is by reservation only.

Ski area · Grandvalira, Canillo and Encamp parishes

The largest ski area in the Pyrenees, and reachable from the capital without a car: the Funicamp gondola out of Encamp goes straight up into it. The Andorra Pass covers 308 km of piste across Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, which is the whole country on one ticket.

- **Time:** Full day

### 6. Espai Columba and Santa Coloma

Museum · Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** €
- **Best at:** Tuesday to Saturday
- **Tip:** Closed Mondays

Walk · Col·legi Sant Ermengol to Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella

An irrigation canal dug in 1880 to water the orchards on the sunny side of the valley, now four near-level kilometres of path above the rooftops. It is the best free hour in town, and the only place the capital reads as a mountain village again.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Flat the whole way, any shoes will do

### 8. Església de Sant Esteve

The parish church of the old town, eleventh to twelfth century, keeping the largest Romanesque apse in the principality. The murals that once lined it now hang at Espai Columba in Santa Coloma. Twenty minutes, and it is the oldest thing on the square.

- **Time:** 20 min
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** The apse is the original part

### 9. La Noblesse du Temps

Dalí’s melting clock, cast in bronze in 1984 and set on the square in 2010. Five metres of crowned, drooping dial propped on a tree trunk. It takes two minutes on the way to the shops, and it is the photograph most people leave with.

## Andorra la Vella travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Andorra la Vella?

Two. The first covers the old town, Casa de la Vall, Sant Esteve and the shopping run along Avinguda Meritxell, with Caldea in the evening. The second belongs to the mountains, either the Madriu valley on foot or Grandvalira on skis.

### How do you get to Andorra with no airport?

By road only. Buses from Barcelona El Prat reach the national bus station in about three hours and run several times a day, and Toulouse is the other approach. Andorra–La Seu d’Urgell airport sits over the Spanish border, with flights to Madrid and Mallorca and a shuttle that meets them.

### Is shopping in Andorra actually cheaper?

On some things. General indirect tax is 4.5%, against 21% in Spain and 20% in France, so electronics, perfume, spirits and ski kit sit below shelf prices on either side. Customs allowances apply when you cross back, and both borders check.

### Do you need a car in Andorra?

No. The capital is walkable end to end and national bus lines reach every parish, the ski areas included, for a few euros. A car helps for trailheads at odd hours, and parking in the centre is paid and tight.

### When is the best time to visit?

February for snow, when all three resorts are open and the Andorra Pass covers 308 km of piste. June to September for the high trails, once the lakes above 2,000 metres are clear of it. The shops trade all year.
