# Top 10 Things To Do in Al Ain

Al Ain, United Arab Emirates · Asia · By Wimup Editorial, 10 min read

Al Ain is the Emirates' inland city, on the Omani border, under two hours by road from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It has what the coast lacks: working date oases watered by ancient channels, mud-brick forts, Bronze Age tombs and a mountain to drive up at sunset. Come between November and March.

## Quick answer

Walk the shaded lanes of Al Ain Oasis in the morning, then cross to Al Jahili Fort for the Wilfred Thesiger photographs and the reopened Al Ain Museum next to the oasis. Spend the afternoon among the Bronze Age tombs at Hili, go early to the camel market behind Bawadi Mall, and drive the hairpins up Jebel Hafit to watch the sun set over the city.

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Nov · Dec · Jan · Feb · Mar
- **Ideal length:** 1–2 days
- **Budget per day:** $80–180
- **Language:** Arabic; English widely spoken
- **Getting around:** Car hire, taxis & city buses

## The 10 best things to do in Al Ain

### 1. Walk Al Ain Oasis

Oasis · Al Ain Oasis, Central District, Al Ain

About 147,000 date palms on 1,200 hectares, still watered by falaj channels, and the core of the UAE's first UNESCO listing. Start at the free Eco-Centre by the entrance, then walk the shaded lanes before the midday heat.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Bikes and buggies can be hired

### 2. Drive up Jebel Hafit

Mountain · Jebel Hafit Road, Al Ain

A road of about 12 km climbs the 1,249-metre ridge south of the city, two lanes up and one down, to a car park at the top. Drive up an hour before sunset and stop at the lay-bys on the way down to watch the city lights come on.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free road
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Weekend evenings get busy

### 3. Explore Al Jahili Fort

Fort · Al Jahili Fort, Central District, Al Ain

A mud-brick fort built in the 1890s for Zayed the First, restored in 2007–2008, with a permanent exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger's 1940s photographs of the Empty Quarter. The photographs are the reason to go; the round tower is the picture.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Pair it with the oasis

The UAE's first museum, founded in 1969, reopened in October 2025 after a seven-year rebuild. It runs from Stone Age tools to the aflaj and recent finds from the Hafit tombs and Al Qattara.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed; under-18s free
- **Best at:** Midday
- **Tip:** Next to the oasis entrance

### 5. See Qasr Al Muwaiji

Fort · Qasr Al Muwaiji, Al Muwaiji, Al Ain

The fort where Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed was born in 1948, now a museum with a glass-walled exhibition in the courtyard on his life and the ruling family. It is the clearest single account of how Al Ain shaped the country.

### 6. Walk Hili Archaeological Park

Archaeology · Hili Archaeological Park, Hili, Al Ain

The UAE's largest group of Umm an-Nar tombs and buildings, around a 12-metre circular Grand Tomb more than 4,000 years old, carved with people and animals. Look for the figures over the two entrances.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Shade is scarce at midday

### 7. Watch the camel market

A working livestock market where herders trade camels from pens behind Bawadi Mall. Most of the trading happens in the morning, and visits are meant to be arranged with the market staff.

- **Time:** 1 hr
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Ask before taking photos

### 9. Soak at Green Mubazzarah

Park · Green Mubazzarah, foot of Jebel Hafit, Al Ain

A grassy park at the foot of Jebel Hafit where naturally warm springs feed a lake and pools. Locals picnic here on cool evenings; come on a weekday to have the lawns to yourself.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free park
- **Best at:** Evening

## Al Ain travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Al Ain?

One full day covers the oasis, Al Jahili Fort, the museum and Jebel Hafit at sunset. Stay a second day for Hili, the camel market, the zoo and a walk in Jebel Hafit Desert Park.

### Is Al Ain worth a day trip from Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Both are under two hours away by car, and Al Ain shows the inland Emirates the coast does not: date oases, mud-brick forts and Bronze Age tombs. Start early and finish on Jebel Hafit.

### Can you visit Al Ain without a car?

Partly. The E201 bus links Dubai's Al Ghubaiba station with Al Ain, and the oasis, museum and Al Jahili Fort are close together in the centre. Jebel Hafit, the desert park and the camel market need a taxi or a hire car.

### When is the best time to visit Al Ain?

November to March, when days are warm rather than punishing. Summer inland is hotter than on the coast, and Al Ain Zoo closes from about late June to early September.

### Is Al Ain expensive?

Less than Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The oasis, Al Jahili Fort, Hili Archaeological Park and the camel market are free; the museum, the zoo and Wadi Adventure charge entry.
