# Top 10 Things To Do in Adelaide

Adelaide, Australia · Oceania · By Wimup Editorial, 15 min read

Adelaide sits on a grid inside a ring of park lands, which makes it the rare Australian capital you can cross on foot in half an hour. Below are the ten experiences worth your time, plus the small bars, the beaches and the five wine regions that start within ninety minutes of the centre.

## Quick answer

The best things to do in Adelaide are the Central Market, the RoofClimb at Adelaide Oval, the free museums and galleries along North Terrace, and the tram to Glenelg beach. Give the city three days, add a fourth for the Barossa or McLaren Vale, and travel in autumn (March to May) or spring (September to November).

## Quick facts

- **Best months:** Mar · Apr · Oct · Nov
- **Ideal length:** 3–4 days
- **Budget per day:** A$130–240
- **Language:** English
- **Getting around:** Trams, buses & walking
- **Tourism board:** [Official site](https://southaustralia.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## The 10 best things to do in Adelaide

### 1. Eat your way through the Adelaide Central Market

Market · 44-60 Gouger Street, Adelaide SA 5000

More than 70 traders under one roof, trading on this block since 1869, and the clearest evidence that Adelaide eats better than a city of its size should. Barossa smallgoods, Kangaroo Island produce, cheese rooms, and a doughnut queue that forms before the lunch rush. It backs onto Chinatown. It does not trade on Sunday or Monday.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free entry
- **Best at:** Sat morning
- **Tip:** Closed Sun and Mon

### 2. Walk the roof of Adelaide Oval

Landmark · War Memorial Drive, North Adelaide SA 5006

The Western Stand has a walkway across its roofline that ends on a platform 50 metres above the turf, with the city grid on one side and the Mount Lofty Ranges on the other. Day, twilight and night climbs run through the year. If heights are not the plan, the stadium tour covers the same ground at pitch level, ten minutes from North Terrace.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Twilight
- **Tip:** Book ahead

### 3. Take the Elder Wing at the Art Gallery of South Australia

Gallery · 490 North Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000

Free, founded in 1881, and the strongest of the institutions standing shoulder to shoulder along North Terrace. The Australian collection is the reason to come, and the Elder Wing is the room people remember: a nineteenth-century hall hung salon style, paintings stacked toward the ceiling. Give it an hour, then walk fifty metres west to the museum.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday
- **Tip:** Start in the Elder Wing

### 4. See the collections at the South Australian Museum

Museum · North Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000

Also free, also on North Terrace, and holding one of the world's most significant collections of Australian Aboriginal cultural material. The other draw is polar: the museum keeps the material Douglas Mawson brought back from the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, which left from Adelaide. Two hours covers it without rushing.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Weekday
- **Tip:** Pair it with the gallery

### 5. Spend a morning in the Adelaide Botanic Garden

Garden · North Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000

Free, open every day, and filling the northeast corner of the grid. The Palm House is a restored Victorian glasshouse shipped out from Bremen, the Bicentennial Conservatory holds a lowland rainforest under a glass arc, and the Museum of Economic Botany is an oddity almost nobody expects. The National Wine Centre stands at the eastern gate.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Early morning
- **Tip:** Enter from North Terrace

### 6. Ride the tram to Glenelg

Beach · Moseley Square, Glenelg SA 5045

One line runs from the city grid to the sea, and it costs nothing inside the centre or along Jetty Road at the far end. Moseley Square is the arrival: a long jetty, a wide flat beach that faces west into the sunset, and enough cafes to make an afternoon of it. Dolphin cruises leave from the marina alongside.

- **Time:** Half day
- **Cost:** Free in the city zone
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Free again on Jetty Road

### 7. Meet the pandas at Adelaide Zoo

Zoo · Frome Road, Adelaide SA 5000

Australia's second-oldest zoo, open since 1883, and the only zoo in the southern hemisphere with giant pandas. Xing Qiu and Yi Lan went on show in the Bamboo Forest in January 2025, replacing the pair that spent fifteen years here. The zoo backs onto the Botanic Garden, so the two run together as one morning.

- **Time:** 2–3 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Morning
- **Tip:** Catch the panda keeper talk

Links: [Website](https://www.adelaidezoo.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 8. Climb to the Mount Lofty Summit

Lookout · Mount Lofty Summit Road, Crafers SA 5152

The high point of the Mount Lofty Ranges at 727 metres, twenty minutes' drive from the city, and the one view that puts the whole thing in a single frame: grid, plain and gulf. Drivers park at the summit. Walkers start at Waterfall Gully and climb roughly 3.9 km each way through Cleland National Park, which is the better version if the legs allow.

- **Time:** 1–2 hrs
- **Cost:** Free
- **Best at:** Sunset
- **Tip:** Walk up from Waterfall Gully

Links: [National Parks SA](https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/parks/mount-lofty-summit?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 9. Walk among the kangaroos at Cleland Wildlife Park

Wildlife · 365 Mount Lofty Summit Road, Crafers SA 5152

Thirty-five hectares of open bushland below the summit, with more than 130 native species and very few fences: kangaroos and wallabies are loose on the paths, and the koalas sit in trees you walk past. It is the closest thing to the Adelaide Hills with the wildlife still in it. Animal encounters are ticketed separately and book out.

- **Time:** 2 hrs
- **Cost:** Ticketed
- **Best at:** Late afternoon
- **Tip:** Pair it with the summit

Links: [Website](https://www.clelandwildlifepark.sa.gov.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

### 10. Tour the Haigh's chocolate factory at Parkside

Food · 154 Greenhill Road, Parkside SA 5063

Australia's oldest family-owned chocolate maker, on the same Parkside block since 1919 and still run by the fourth generation of the family that started it in 1915. The guided visitor-centre experience is free and follows the process from bean to bar. The chocolate frogs are the souvenir every South Australian sends interstate.

- **Time:** 45 min
- **Cost:** Free tour
- **Best at:** Weekday
- **Tip:** Book the guided experience

## Best restaurants in Adelaide

Ten kitchens, from a Leigh Street dining room to an Afghan kitchen on Henley Beach Road.

1. **Africola** (Modern African · Dinner · East Terrace): Duncan Welgemoed's dining room turns South Australian produce through North and South African cooking, most of it over fire. 2. **Fugazzi Bar & Dining Room** (Italian-American · Dinner · Leigh Street): A basement-feeling room doing American-Italian at volume. 3. **Shōbōsho** (Japanese · Fire cooking · Leigh Street): Japanese technique over charcoal and wood, with a counter looking straight into the grills. Weekend tables need booking. [Website](https://shobosho.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **Sunny's Pizza** (Pizza · Late · Solomon Street): Napoli-style pizza in a laneway room that turns into a party after ten. The No. 5 with pork and fennel sausage is the house pick. [Website](https://sunnys.pizza/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

7. **Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant** (Fine dining · Vineyard · Magill): A 34-seat room looking over the original Penfolds vineyard, with the city beyond it. 8. **Anchovy Bandit** (Pizza · Wine bar · Prospect): A Prospect Road corner doing wood-fired pizza and a wine list with more nerve than the format suggests. Walk-in heavy, and worth the wait. [Website](https://anchovybandit.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
9. **Golden Boy** (Thai · Group dining · North Terrace): Thai cooking in a room built for a table of six, with a courtyard that fills the moment the weather turns. Order across the menu rather than one dish each. [Website](https://goldenboy.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
10. **Lucia's Pizza & Spaghetti Bar** (Italian · Since 1957 · Central Market): A market counter that has been feeding Adelaide since 1957, and still the best cheap plate of pasta in the city. Cash-era simplicity, market hours, no bookings. [Website](https://lucias.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best small bars in Adelaide

Eight bars, most of them within five minutes of each other on Leigh, Peel and Gilbert.

1. **Maybe Mae** (Cocktails · Basement · Peel Street): A deliberately unmarked stairway off Peel Street leads down to the city's most decorated cocktail room, with a list that changes properly rather than cosmetically. [Website](https://maybemae.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

3. **Pink Moon Saloon** (Cocktails · Courtyard · Leigh Street): A timber A-frame wedged into a service alley less than four metres wide, bar at one end, kitchen at the other. The design has won awards; the drinks hold up alone. [South Australia](https://southaustralia.com/products/adelaide/food-and-drink/pink-moon-saloon?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

8. **Mother Vine** (Wine bar · East End · Vardon Avenue): A wine bar that reads the state properly: Adelaide Hills chardonnay, Barossa shiraz and older bottles by the glass, a block from Rundle Street. [Website](https://mothervine.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best museums & galleries in Adelaide

Eight collections past the two big free institutions in the Top 10, from a migration museum to a craft workshop you can watch.

1. **Migration Museum** (Museum · Free · Kintore Avenue): Set in the old Destitute Asylum behind the State Library, and the plainest account of how South Australia was settled, told through the people involved. [Website](https://migration.history.sa.gov.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
2. **MOD.** (Museum · Free · North Terrace): A future-focused museum at the University of South Australia that runs one provocative exhibition at a time. Small, free and better than the description sounds. [Website](https://mod.org.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
3. **Samstag Museum of Art** (Gallery · Free · North Terrace): The university's contemporary art space, three floors of it, and the most reliable place in the city to see work made this decade. [Website](https://unisa.edu.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
4. **JamFactory** (Craft · Studios · Morphett Street): Glass, ceramics, metal and furniture studios with a gallery in front and the workshops visible behind. The glass-blowing is worth timing a visit around. [Website](https://www.jamfactory.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **South Australian Maritime Museum** (Museum · Ticketed · Port Adelaide): In a bond store on the Port Adelaide waterfront, covering the migrant ships, the ketch trade and the lighthouse you can climb across the road. 6. **National Railway Museum** (Museum · Ticketed · Port Adelaide): The largest railway museum in the country by collection, with the Tea and Sugar train and a shed of broad-gauge locomotives you can walk between. [Website](https://natrailmuseum.org.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
7. **Carrick Hill** (House museum · Garden · Springfield): An English-style manor and its garden in the foothills, left to the state with the collection and furniture in place. The grounds are what people return for. [Website](https://www.carrickhill.sa.gov.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
8. **Adelaide Gaol** (Historic site · Tours · Thebarton): In use from 1841 to 1988, which makes it one of the longest-serving prisons in Australia, and now open for day tours and after-dark ones. [Website](https://www.adelaidegaol.sa.gov.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best beaches in Adelaide

Eight beaches along the metropolitan coast, north to south, all of them reachable without leaving Adelaide.

4. **Brighton** (Swimming · Cafes · Brighton): Jetty Road runs down to a jetty and a clean stretch of sand, with more cafes per metre than any other beach suburb here.

8. **Aldinga Beach** (Surf · Nature · Aldinga): The southern end of the run, backed by scrub and an aquatic reserve, and the closest metropolitan beach to McLaren Vale.

2. **McLaren Vale** (40 min · Shiraz & grenache · McLaren Vale): Vineyards that run to the sea, forty minutes south. Grenache is the region's real argument, and the d'Arenberg Cube is visible from the road. [Website](https://mclarenvale.info/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

4. **Barossa Valley** (1 hr · Shiraz · Barossa Valley): An hour northeast, with more than 80 cellar doors and some of the oldest producing vines anywhere. Shiraz is the reason, German settlement the texture. [Website](https://www.barossa.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
5. **Eden Valley** (1 hr 15 · Riesling · Eden Valley): The high country above the Barossa, where the altitude turns the same state's fruit into riesling with acid and long-lived shiraz. [Website](https://www.barossa.com/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
6. **Clare Valley** (145 km · Riesling · Clare Valley): Two hours north and worth an overnight: dry riesling that ages, and the Riesling Trail running 35 km along a former railway between cellar doors. [Website](https://clarevalley.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)

## Best neighborhoods in Adelaide

Eight neighbourhoods, four of them inside the park lands and four worth the tram or the train.

5. **Bowden** (Redevelopment · Food · Bowden): A former industrial pocket a tram stop from the city, now a dense low-carbon neighbourhood with a brewery, a bakery and a night market.
6. **Prospect** (Cafes · Local · Prospect): Six kilometres north, where Prospect Road has quietly become one of the better eating strips in Adelaide without ever becoming a destination.
7. **Unley and Hyde Park** (Boutiques · Villas · Unley): King William and Unley Roads, lined with well-kept Victorian bungalows, boutiques and cafes that fill by nine on a Saturday.
8. **Port Adelaide** (Heritage · Street art · Port Adelaide): South Australia's first State Heritage Area: nineteenth-century bond stores holding breweries and galleries, more than 50 murals, and river dolphins.

## Best day trips in Adelaide

Eight day trips beyond the wine regions, from a German village in the hills to an island ferry.

1. **Hahndorf** (30 min · Village · Adelaide Hills): Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, founded in 1839 by Prussian Lutheran families. One main street of bakeries, beer and elms. Quiet on a Tuesday.

5. **Mannum** (1 hr 20 · River · Murraylands): The Murray at its most workaday: houseboats, a cable ferry that crosses free of charge, and river cliffs downstream.
6. **Deep Creek National Park** (1 hr 45 · Hiking · Fleurieu): The southern tip of the Fleurieu, with waterfall and clifftop walks, kangaroos at dusk and Kangaroo Island across the strait. [Website](https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/parks/deep-creek-national-park?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
7. **Kangaroo Island** (Ferry from Cape Jervis · Full day · Kangaroo Island): A long day rather than a short one: two hours to Cape Jervis, then a 45-minute crossing. Better as an overnight, but the ferry makes a single-day run possible. [Website](https://www.sealink.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
8. **Onkaparinga River National Park** (40 min · Gorge · Southern suburbs): A gorge cut 50 metres deep at the edge of the southern suburbs, with river-level walks and a lookout that most Adelaide residents have never used. - **Trams** (Tram): One line, from the Entertainment Centre through the grid down to Glenelg. Free between South Terrace and the Entertainment Centre, and free again along Jetty Road. Between those, tap a card. [Adelaide Metro](https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au/?utm_source=wimup.com&utm_medium=referral)
- **Trains and buses** (Metro): Suburban trains radiate from Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace, reaching Seaford and Grange for the beaches and Belair for the hills. - **Driving and taxis** (Car): The grid is easy to drive and easy to park by capital-city standards, and a car is the honest answer for the wine regions. The Hills, McLaren Vale and the Barossa are within an hour.

## Adelaide travel FAQ

### How many days do you need in Adelaide?

Three days covers the city: the Central Market and the West End, North Terrace and the park lands, and an afternoon at the beach. Add a fourth day for one wine region and a fifth if you want the Adelaide Hills as well.

### What is the best time of year to visit Adelaide?

Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are the reliable windows, with warm days and cool nights. February and March are festival season, which is the city at its best and its busiest, and midsummer can run past 40°C for days at a time.

### Is Adelaide walkable?

The centre is a one-square-mile grid ringed by parks, so almost everything inside it is a fifteen-minute walk. The tram through the grid is free, which covers the length of the city if the heat makes walking unappealing.

### Do you need a car in Adelaide?

Not for the city, where trams, trains and buses reach the beaches and the main streets. For the Barossa, McLaren Vale or the Clare Valley a car is the practical answer, and a tour is the alternative if you plan to taste properly.

### Which wine region should you visit from Adelaide?

McLaren Vale if you have one day and want the coast with it, forty minutes south. The Barossa for shiraz and old vines, an hour north-east. The Adelaide Hills if you have only a morning: it starts twenty kilometres from the centre and includes Hahndorf.
