# Cherry blossom in Europe, ten springs worth a short flight.

By Wimup desk · 10 picks · 6 films · ≈ 4 min read

Ten places in Europe worth timing a spring trip around, from a Spanish valley of a million and a half trees to one royal garden in Stockholm.

Europe's blossom mixes Japanese gifts, city street planting and one valley of fruit orchards. We ranked these ten on the blossom itself: the number and age of the trees, the setting they frame, and how dependable the bloom window is. Windows are the usual ones; each spring follows the weather.

## Cherry blossom in Europe, ten springs worth a short flight.

### 1. Jerte Valley, Spain

Extremadura · Spain

More than a million and a half cherry trees cover the valley's terraced slopes, the largest bloom on the list and the only one grown for fruit. It flowers in a ten to fifteen day burst from late March, and the Fiesta del Cerezo en Flor moves with it from village to village.

- **Best for:** A whole valley
- **Where:** Cabezuela del Valle
- **Blooms:** Late Mar–mid Apr

### 2. Bonn, Germany

Rhineland · Germany

Japanese cherries planted in the 1980s arch over Heerstraße and Breite Straße in the Altstadt, about 60 to a street, into a pink tunnel. The city closes both to cars on bloom weekends; the peak usually lands in early to mid April and lasts ten to fourteen days.

- **Best for:** A blossom tunnel
- **Where:** Altstadt · Heerstraße
- **Blooms:** Early–mid Apr

### 3. Berlin, Germany

Lichterfelde · Germany

A fundraising drive by Japan's TV Asahi paid for more than 9,000 cherry trees after reunification, and about 1,100 of them line the old Wall strip between Lichterfelde and Teltow. It is the longest cherry avenue in Berlin and Brandenburg; cycle it on the Mauerweg.

- **Best for:** The Wall's old line
- **Where:** Mauerweg · Teltow
- **Blooms:** Mid–late Apr

### 4. Paris, France

Île-de-France · France

Parc de Sceaux, a short RER B ride south of the city, keeps two cherry groves: about 150 pink trees in the north bosquet and white ones in the south. The north lawns needed a booked slot in 2026; the south grove stayed free.

- **Best for:** A hanami picnic
- **Where:** Parc de Sceaux
- **Blooms:** Early–mid Apr

### 5. Stockholm, Sweden

Norrmalm · Sweden

Exactly 63 Japanese cherries ring Kungsträdgården, the royal garden in the middle of the city, so the bloom here is a few trees seen up close. They open late, at the end of April or the start of May, and the park's Cherry Blossom Day adds Japanese food and workshops.

- **Best for:** A city centre park
- **Where:** Kungsträdgården
- **Blooms:** Late Apr–early May

### 6. Copenhagen, Denmark

Zealand · Denmark

Two hundred cherry trees, a gift from Denmark's honorary consul in Hiroshima for Hans Christian Andersen's bicentenary, stand in Langelinie Park by the harbour. A free Sakura Festival has filled it on an April weekend since 2008; Bispebjerg Cemetery's avenue is the quiet walk.

- **Best for:** A harbour festival
- **Where:** Langelinie Park
- **Blooms:** Mid–late Apr

### 7. London, UK

Greenwich · UK

Greenwich Park's Cherry Avenue, 28 trees planted in the 1950s, leads to the Rose Garden, and The Royal Parks added 130 Sekiyama cherries below One Tree Hill in 2025. The park puts its peak from late April into early May, one of the later windows here.

- **Best for:** A royal park
- **Where:** Greenwich Park

### 8. Vienna, Austria

Donauinsel · Austria

Japan gave Vienna 1,000 cherry trees in 1996 for Austria's millennium, and about 150 of them form the Kirschenhain on the Donauinsel near the Jedlesee bridge. The grove flowers in April, when the Kirschenhainfest brings Japanese music and food to it.

- **Best for:** An island grove
- **Where:** Donauinsel
- **Blooms:** Early–mid Apr

### 9. Prague, Czechia

Malá Strana · Czechia

Petřín Hill's orchards and gardens climb above Malá Strana, with pink Japanese cherries in the garden by the Újezd stop and white fruit blossom on the slopes above. The bloom usually peaks in the first half of April; go early, before the funicular queue.

- **Best for:** Blossom with a view
- **Where:** Petřín Hill
- **Blooms:** Early–mid Apr

Alster · Germany

The city's Japanese community gave some 5,000 cherry trees in the 1960s, and they now line the Alster banks and Altonaer Volkspark. The trees flower in April, but the cherry blossom fireworks over the Außenalster come in late May, after them.

- **Best for:** Lakeside walks
- **Where:** Alster banks
- **Blooms:** Mid–late Apr
