# Carnivals of Europe, the masks behind the season.

By Wimup desk · 10 picks · ≈ 4 min read

Ten carnivals in seven countries, from the masks of Venice to the Gilles of Binche and the fifes of Basel, ranked on how far a visitor can join in.

Europe's carnivals are older than the samba parades and stranger: masks, wax-faced Gilles, fifes at four in the morning. We ranked these ten on the carnival itself: its scale, how deep its tradition runs, and how much a visitor can take part rather than watch.

## Carnivals of Europe, the masks behind the season.

### 1. Venice, Italy

Veneto · Italy

The masked carnival the rest copy: banned in 1797 and revived in 1979, it fills the city with costume and sends the Volo dell'Angelo over Piazza San Marco. Buy a handmade mask from a workshop, not a stall; the streets are free.

- **Best for:** Masks · costume
- **Where:** Piazza San Marco
- **Runs:** About two weeks to Lent

### 2. Cologne, Germany

North Rhine-Westphalia · Germany

The carnival that asks nothing but a costume: the season opens at 11:11 on 11 November, and from Weiberfastnacht the whole city is in the street. The Rosenmontag parade runs over eight kilometres, and it throws sweets at you.

- **Best for:** Joining in
- **Where:** Old town · Rosenmontag
- **Runs:** Thu–Mon before Lent

### 3. Basel, Switzerland

Basel-Stadt · Switzerland

UNESCO-listed since 2017, and the one that starts after Lent begins: at 4am on the Monday after Ash Wednesday the lights go out for the Morgestraich. Three days of fifes, drums and satire follow; leave the masks to the cliques.

- **Best for:** Fifes · drums
- **Where:** Old town
- **Runs:** 3 days after Ash Wed

### 4. Binche, Belgium

Hainaut · Belgium

A UNESCO masterpiece since 2003 and the strictest tradition here: on Shrove Tuesday about a thousand Gilles, all men born in Binche, dance in wax masks and ostrich-feather hats. They throw oranges to the crowd; catch one, never throw it back.

- **Best for:** The Gilles
- **Where:** Grand-Place
- **Runs:** Sun–Tue before Lent

### 5. Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Canary Islands · Spain

Europe's answer to Rio, and a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest: murgas, comparsas and a carnival queen whose costume rolls on wheels. The street nights draw hundreds of thousands, and a costume is all the entry they ask.

- **Best for:** Street party
- **Where:** Plaza de España · centre
- **Runs:** Weeks around Lent

### 6. Nice, France

Côte d'Azur · France

First mentioned in 1294 and paraded since 1873, this is the carnival of floats and flowers: a giant king rides through Place Masséna, and the Batailles de Fleurs throw blooms from floats on the Promenade des Anglais. Parades are ticketed.

- **Best for:** Floats · flowers
- **Where:** Place Masséna · Promenade
- **Runs:** Two weeks in February

### 7. Cádiz, Spain

Andalusia · Spain

The carnival of words: chirigotas and comparsas sing satirical lyrics in the contest at the Gran Teatro Falla, whose final falls on the Friday before Ash Wednesday. Then the groups take to the streets, and the ilegales of La Viña are free.

- **Best for:** Satirical song
- **Where:** Gran Teatro Falla · La Viña
- **Runs:** Jan contest · Feb streets

### 8. Viareggio, Italy

Tuscany · Italy

Parading since 1873, it builds towering papier-mâché floats, satirical giants that roll along the seafront avenue. The parades are ticketed, and the workshops of the Cittadella and its museum show how a float is made.

- **Best for:** Satirical floats
- **Where:** Seafront avenue
- **Runs:** Weekends before Lent

### 9. Mainz, Germany

Rhineland-Palatinate · Germany

The Mainzer Carneval-Verein has run the Rosenmontag parade since 1838, and the city's Fastnacht is the political one: the speeches at its sittings and the floats in its parade mock whoever governs. Come in costume.

- **Best for:** Political satire
- **Where:** Old town
- **Runs:** Thu–Tue before Lent

### 10. Patras, Greece

Achaea · Greece

Greece's largest carnival, traced to a merchant's ball in 1829, hands its streets to the public: tens of thousands join the crews of its Hidden Treasure game. It follows the Orthodox calendar and ends with a parade and the burning of the carnival king.

- **Best for:** Taking part
- **Where:** Town centre · port
- **Runs:** Weeks to Orthodox Lent

## FAQs

### When is carnival in Europe in 2027?

Most of these end on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, which falls on 10 February in 2027. Basel starts after it, on the Monday that follows, and Patras keeps the Orthodox calendar, so it ends later.

### Can visitors dress up and join in?

In Cologne, Mainz, Tenerife and Patras a costume is expected rather than allowed, and Venice is a costume carnival too. In Basel the masks belong to the cliques, and in Binche only men born in the town may be Gilles.

### Which European carnivals are UNESCO-listed?

Binche was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. Basel's Fasnacht was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017.

### Do I need tickets?

The streets are free almost everywhere. Nice and Viareggio sell tickets for their parades, and the contest at Cádiz's Gran Teatro Falla is ticketed, with its final selling out first.

### How far ahead should I book a hotel?

Months ahead for Venice, Cologne and Nice, where carnival weekends fill the city and prices climb. Binche is small, so most visitors sleep in Brussels or Mons and come in by train.
